Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAbstract’s Website Screenshot API has announced support for capturing password-protected website content, but its current API reference does not document how to provide credentials for the protected site. You can confirm the API’s documented request and rendering options; do not assume its API key logs in to the target website or invent a credential parameter. Verify the current authentication method with Abstract before sending a protected-page request.
What Abstract documents—and what it does not
Abstract calls the product the Website Screenshot API. Its Version 1 REST API accepts a target URL and an API key that authenticates access to Abstract’s API. The reference’s example request uses api_key and url. Abstract notes that each of its APIs has a unique key. See the Abstract API reference.

Separately, Abstract’s product-page changelog says: “Expanded support to allow content capture of password-protected websites” (May 20, 2024). That announcement establishes that Abstract expanded support for this use case; it does not specify how to authenticate to the target site. The API reference reviewed here does not document target-site cookies, Basic Auth, an Authorization header, or login automation. See Abstract’s product page and changelog.
Those are two different authentication questions: the Abstract API key authorizes your request to Abstract, while a separate, as-yet-undocumented method would need to grant access to the protected page. Do not treat the API key as the target site’s login.

Verify the target-site authentication method first
Before writing a capture request for a protected URL, check Abstract’s current documentation or ask its support team to confirm the exact method. Get the precise parameter or request format, supported authentication types, credential scope, and behavior across redirects. The changelog announcement alone is not enough to infer any of these details.
- Do not guess a credential parameter or adapt another provider’s syntax for Abstract.
- Keep target-site passwords, cookies, and tokens out of public URLs, repositories, and client-side code unless Abstract explicitly documents and recommends that approach.
- Ask how secrets are transmitted and handled, which hosts or redirects they apply to, and whether there are restrictions on protected content.
The reference states that communications must use TLS 1.2 or greater. That is a transport requirement for communications with the API, not documentation of a target-site login mechanism. Abstract API reference.

What you can configure once access is established
Abstract documents these rendering and output controls. They affect how a page is captured, not how the screenshot service signs in to the target website.

Safe implementation workflow
- Confirm access. Verify that the exact page is protected and obtain the approved target-authentication method from Abstract’s current documentation or support.
- Confirm request details. Check current endpoint, API-key parameter, target-credential fields or headers, encoding, supported schemes, redirect scope, and output handling.
- Make a minimal request. Start with the documented target URL and Abstract API key, adding target credentials only in the exact format Abstract confirms. Avoid exposing secrets in shared URLs or browser-side code.
- Validate the result. Confirm that the returned capture is the authenticated page rather than a login screen, access-denied page, or redirect destination. Adjust documented rendering settings only after access works.
Because the target credential mechanism is not established by the cited documentation, a complete runnable example for capturing a protected page cannot be given accurately. Do not copy a guessed parameter into production code.

If you need a capture workflow without assembling browser automation, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. Its documented one-call API example captures a public URL; it does not establish that ScreenshotNeo can authenticate to a password-protected target, so verify that use case separately.

For a public-page capture, save this as an image file (replace the example URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Quick Recap

Troubleshooting protected-page captures
- The result is a login page. The target site may not have received valid authentication, or a redirect may have led to an unauthenticated page. Confirm the supported credential method and redirect scope with Abstract; do not add guessed fields.
- The request is rejected. Check the Abstract API key and documented request parameters against the current reference. Remember that the API key is for Abstract’s API, not the target site’s credentials.
- The capture is incomplete or appears too early. Once authenticated access is verified, review the documented full-page setting and delay. These control capture behavior, not login.
- The output format is unexpected. Check the documented
export_formatsetting and its JPEG default, and confirm current behavior in Abstract’s reference. - The target uses an unsupported or unclear login flow. Ask Abstract whether the specific scheme and redirect path are supported before sending credentials.
