To screenshot an infinite-scrolling page in Playwright, first scroll the page or its feed container to trigger more content, wait for a page-specific signal that the new items have loaded, and repeat until you reach a defined stopping point. Then capture it with fullPage: true. That option captures the page’s current scrollable extent; it does not load items that have not yet been requested.
Why fullPage alone is not enough
A normal long document already contains its content in the page, so a full-page screenshot can often capture it in one pass. An infinite feed commonly fetches and appends items only as you scroll. Playwright must drive that behavior before capture. Its Screenshots guide describes a full-page image as the full scrollable page; the scrolling guide documents scrolling a bottom element into view to trigger more items.

Decide what “complete” means for your task: a known end marker, a target item count, or a maximum number of batches. An actually unbounded feed has no natural final screenshot.
Load items, wait, then capture
The JavaScript example below assumes an already-open Playwright page, list rows matching .list-item, and an optional end marker. Replace those with selectors and conditions from the site you are capturing.

A count that stops changing for three rounds can indicate the feed stopped, but it can also mean a request is still pending or the wrong selector is being counted. Use the site’s actual loading state or request when available, and keep the maximum scroll count as a safety limit.
Use a site-specific wait when possible
After scrolling, wait for something meaningful: the item count to increase, a loading indicator to disappear, a known next row to become visible, or the relevant response to complete. A fixed delay such as 500 milliseconds is only a fallback; slower connections and variable server response times can make it unreliable. networkidle is not a universal completion condition for feeds: polling can prevent network quiet, while a brief quiet period does not prove there are no more results.

Scroll the feed itself when it is nested
If a panel has its own scrollbar, scrolling window may do nothing to advance the feed. Target the panel instead:

Both request the current full scrollable page. Playwright also supports returning a screenshot buffer if your application needs to process or store the image itself. Check the documentation for the Playwright version installed in your project; the cited official guides use the “Next” documentation path and may describe options newer than an older installation.

Handle lazy images, virtualized lists, and very tall pages
Lazy-loaded images
Scrolling through feed content can trigger images to load as they approach the viewport. If image completeness matters, wait for a meaningful image-ready condition before capture; scrolling alone does not guarantee every site has finished loading every image.
Virtualized lists
A virtualized feed may keep only the rows near the viewport in the DOM and remove earlier rows as you move down. In that case, one full-page screenshot may not contain the full record even after extensive scrolling. Capture viewport-sized segments as you advance, or use the underlying application data if your task permits. This is a practical consequence of how virtualized rendering works, not a universal recipe supplied by Playwright’s documentation.

Very tall output
A single tall image can become difficult for tools and people to process because of its dimensions and memory use. Consider capturing sections or viewport-sized chunks instead. Playwright also supports element screenshots when a particular region is the useful output.

Dynamic feeds can change between runs because of new content, animations, or timing. For visual regression checks, Playwright’s screenshot assertion documentation describes waiting for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparison. The Page API also documents animation controls and masking options in its screenshot reference. These controls help with visual comparisons, but they do not replace a reliable rule for loading and stopping the feed.
Troubleshooting
- The screenshot only contains the first screen: The capture may have happened before scrolling triggered another batch. Verify that scrolling changes the feed and that your wait observes new content before calling
screenshot(). - The page does not move: Check whether scrolling belongs to a nested panel. Set that panel’s
scrollTopor bring a bottom item into view rather than scrolling the window. - The loop stops too soon: A stable item count can reflect a pending request or an incorrect row selector. Wait on the site’s loading indicator, expected row, or relevant response; confirm the locator matches the rows actually rendered.
- The loop never reaches its stopping condition: The feed may have no natural end, or the end-marker text may differ. Set a target count or scroll/time budget and validate the stop condition against the page.
- Some images are missing: Scroll through their region to trigger lazy loading, then wait for the image-ready condition relevant to the site.
- Earlier rows are absent from the image: The list may be virtualized and may not retain offscreen rows. Capture sequential segments or use permitted underlying data instead of relying on one full-page image.
- The output is unwieldy or capture fails on a very tall page: Reduce the capture to sections or viewport-sized segments, or screenshot a specific element.
