Check that the intended page—not a sign-in redirect—has loaded before calling page.screenshot(). Treat the saved state as a secret: it can contain information that lets someone impersonate the account.
What you need before taking the screenshot
- Playwright installed with the browser you plan to use.
- An account authorized to access the specific Shopify store and admin page.
- The actual admin URL for that store and target route. There is no single URL established here for every store and page.
- A secure local location for the saved authentication state and the resulting image.
Login steps, multifactor authentication (MFA), and session policies depend on the store and account. Complete any required human verification through the permitted sign-in flow; this method does not bypass MFA or Shopify security checks.

Sign in once and save Playwright storage state
Use a setup script to open a clean browser context, sign in with the authorized account, confirm a reliable post-login condition, and save the context’s storage state. The precise sign-in interaction is store-specific, so the example leaves that part for the permitted flow you use.

Its authentication guide warns that “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Store it in a local ignored directory such as playwright/.auth/; never commit it, print it, or share it in a repository or shared storage.

Reuse the state and capture the admin page
Set SHOPIFY_ADMIN_URL to the actual page you want to capture, then run this script from a project where Playwright is installed and the saved state exists. The example assumes the Products heading is a valid landmark on your target page; change the assertion to match the page you actually expect.

await browser.close();Use a page-specific assertion that would fail on a login redirect or error page. Playwright’s URL or UI assertions can provide that check; a fixed sleep alone cannot establish that the correct page loaded. The official Playwright authentication guide, BrowserContext documentation, and Page API reference describe storage state and screenshots. Check the API options against the Playwright version installed in your project.
Choose the right screenshot scope
Viewport capture
Omit fullPage or set it to false to capture the visible viewport. This is useful when the image should match what a person sees without scrolling.

Full-page capture
Set fullPage: true, as in the example, to capture the page beyond the visible viewport. A tall admin page may produce a large image, and page content that loads only as you scroll may need extra handling before capture.
Handle authentication state safely and reliably
State expiry and storage mechanisms
Saved browser state may expire. If Shopify redirects to sign-in or the expected landmark never appears, repeat the permitted sign-in flow and save fresh state. Playwright storage state covers common browser state such as cookies and local storage, and can include IndexedDB with suitable options. Session storage is a special case: Playwright’s guide describes a separate save-and-restore approach for it. If a session fails to restore, determine which storage mechanism the login uses rather than assuming the state file is complete.
Parallel workers
A shared state file may be sufficient when workers only read the same account state. If parallel tests modify shared server-side data, Playwright recommends separate accounts per worker to avoid tests interfering with one another. Use accounts authorized for the pages and actions each worker needs.

Keep credentials and captures private
- Keep authentication state out of version control and logs.
- Use environment configuration for the admin URL; do not put account credentials in source code.
- Restrict access to screenshots according to the store’s data and privacy rules.
- Close the browser context and browser after the capture is complete.
Shopify API authentication is not a browser login
Shopify app API credentials and a staff member’s logged-in browser session are different things. Shopify’s authentication overview distinguishes an access token used for app API calls from an ID token representing the user; an ID token is not itself an API access token. Neither should be treated as a browser cookie or a direct replacement for signing into the admin UI.

Troubleshooting
The browser lands on sign-in instead of the admin page
The saved state may have expired, may not belong to the expected account, or may omit the storage mechanism used by the login flow. Reauthenticate through the permitted account flow, save fresh state, and confirm the page-specific landmark before capturing.

The landmark wait times out
Check that SHOPIFY_ADMIN_URL points to the intended store and page, and that the selected heading or other landmark really appears there. A timeout can also mean the browser was redirected, the account lacks access, or the page did not finish loading. Inspect the resulting URL and page before changing the wait condition.
Restored login fails despite a state file
Check state expiry and whether the login relies on session storage. Playwright treats session storage separately from its ordinary saved state; follow its authentication guide’s save-and-restore approach if that storage is required.
Image is incomplete or unexpectedly large
Choose viewport capture when only the visible region is needed. For a full-page image, wait for the relevant content to appear and account for content that loads on scroll; full-page capture can create a very tall file.
