What “screenshot API” means for the GST portal
A browser screenshot API controls or accesses a browser and saves the rendered page as an image. It can capture the page you can see after signing in, subject to the browser session and the portal’s access checks.

GSTN’s system APIs serve a different purpose: they are RESTful, JSON-based and stateless interfaces for authorized system-to-system integration. GSTN states that production API endpoints can only be consumed via MPLS lines, and that the GST System is not available over the public internet for security reasons. Capture a page from an authorized session
- Sign in normally. Open the GST portal in a browser session you are authorized to use. Enter credentials yourself and complete any CAPTCHA, password, or OTP prompt. The GST portal’s login guidance describes OTP requirements in circumstances such as first login and certain risk or device conditions; do not assume a saved URL will open an authenticated page. - Open the exact page. Navigate through the portal to the page you need to document. Confirm the relevant details are visible and that the page has finished rendering.
- Capture the rendered browser page. Use a screenshot method exposed by your browser automation tool, or a screenshot service that can capture a publicly reachable page. The official GST materials cited here do not prescribe a browser library or show that an external service can reuse a GST login session. Do not send credentials, OTPs, cookies, or private portal URLs to an untrusted service.
- Save and handle the image securely. Check that the capture shows the intended page and does not expose unrelated taxpayer or personal information. Store it according to your organization’s data-handling rules.

Use an authorized GSTN/GSP integration route and confirm its access and onboarding requirements with the relevant provider. GSTN’s GSP ecosystem page describes system API access, while its FAQ discusses taxpayers connecting through GSPs or selected ERP, billing, and accounting software providers for e-invoice API access. An ASP routes client GST data through a GSP. These are integration arrangements, not browser screenshot services. Troubleshooting a missing or unusable screenshot
- You see a login page instead of the target page: the browser did not have a valid authenticated session, the session expired, or the portal redirected you. Sign in through the normal process and navigate to the page again.
- The portal pauses at CAPTCHA or asks for an OTP: complete the prompt as the authorized user. The login flow may require these checks; a screenshot API is not a substitute for authentication.
- The image is blank or incomplete: check that the page has finished rendering and that the browser is displaying the intended content before capture. The official sources cited here do not specify a required wait time or automation library.
- You expected JSON or GST transaction data: a browser screenshot produces an image, not structured GST data. Investigate the authorized GSTN/GSP integration path instead.
- You cannot reach a production GST system API from an ordinary internet connection: GSTN states that production API endpoints can only be consumed via MPLS lines. Contact the responsible integration provider or administrator about the applicable access arrangements.
- The screenshot contains sensitive information: restrict access to the image, avoid sharing it publicly, and capture only what is needed to explain the issue.
