Use Playwright to open the Next.js page, wait for a locator that proves the specific content you need is visible, and then take the screenshot. Hydration makes Client Components interactive; it does not guarantee that data fetched after mount has arrived. A page-specific readiness check is therefore more dependable than waiting a fixed number of seconds or relying on a browser lifecycle event.
Why a Next.js screenshot can capture the wrong state
In the App Router, pages and layouts are Server Components by default. On an initial visit, Next.js can send prerendered HTML that appears before client-side JavaScript has finished hydrating Client Components. Hydration is React attaching event handlers to the DOM so the static HTML becomes interactive. Next.js documentation on Server and Client Components

Hydration and content readiness are different milestones. A Client Component may fetch data after it mounts, first showing a loading state and then updating with the response. A screenshot taken after hydration but before that update can still show a placeholder. Next.js documentation on client-side rendering
Capture the intended state with Playwright
Install Playwright and its browser if they are not already available in the project. The example uses the Chromium browser, a fixed viewport, and a visible heading as the readiness signal. Replace the URL and locator with values that prove the specific content you want to capture—not merely a heading that is already present in the server-rendered shell.

Choose a readiness signal that matches the screenshot
- For a data-driven page: wait for a locator containing or identifying the expected result, such as a table row for a known record.
- For a loading flow: wait for the loading indicator to disappear, then also check that the intended content is visible. Disappearance alone may mean an error or empty state.
- For a component-only capture: wait for the component’s ready state, then use Playwright’s locator screenshot method rather than capturing the whole page.
Set an explicit timeout appropriate to the application when a default wait is not suitable. The signal should represent the state to be captured; no single locator or timeout fits every page.

Control the browser context for repeatable captures
Viewport, browser, locale, device scale, authentication, storage state, and test data can all affect the rendered page. Specify the context settings your capture needs, and keep them consistent when comparing screenshots. This makes the setup more reproducible, but does not guarantee pixel-identical images if the page contains changing content.

Troubleshooting blank or premature screenshots
The screenshot shows a loading placeholder
Wait for the actual data-bearing element or a page-specific ready state, not just navigation or a generic shell heading. Check that the signal cannot become true before the content you need is rendered.
Client-fetched content never appears
Inspect the browser console and failed network requests. A screenshot call cannot repair an application-side fetch failure; determine whether the request failed, returned unexpected data, or left the component in its loading state.

The page reports a hydration mismatch
Compare the server-rendered output with the first client render. Next.js advises keeping those initial outputs consistent. Its guidance describes using an effect for intentional client-only changes, disabling prerendering for selected components, and using suppressHydrationWarning only as a narrow escape hatch. That option works only one level deep and does not make React patch mismatched text; it is not a general screenshot fix. Next.js hydration error guidance
Visual comparisons vary between runs
Keep the viewport, browser environment, locale, device scale, authentication, and test data consistent. Stabilize time-varying content where appropriate and wait for the same application state each time. These practices reduce avoidable variation, but do not guarantee identical pixels.
