Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot on your Mac. Choose to record the entire screen or a selected portion, set any microphone or save options, then click Record. Stop from the menu bar or press Command-Control-Esc. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, supported Macs also offer selected-window recording.
Record your Mac screen with Screenshot
- Press Shift-Command-5. The Screenshot controls appear on screen.
- Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. If you choose a portion, adjust the frame around the area you want to capture. On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Record Selected Window is also available.
- Open Options to choose a microphone, show mouse clicks, set a timer, change where the recording is saved, or select a capture format if your Mac offers one.
- Click Record. If you selected a portion, check that the frame contains the right content before recording.
- To finish, click the Stop control in the menu bar or press Command-Control-Esc.
- Click the floating thumbnail to review or edit the recording, or wait for the file to save. By default, recordings go to the Desktop. The automatic filename format is “Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov.”
Choose the right capture area and options
Entire screen, a portion, or a window
Use Record Entire Screen for a walkthrough that moves between apps or menus. Choose Record Selected Portion when viewers only need to see one part of the display. Selected-window recording is documented for macOS Tahoe 26 or later and depends on Mac and system support; if the option is absent, record the whole screen or select a portion instead.
Narration and microphone input
To include your voice or other microphone input, open Options and select a microphone before starting. A microphone is optional: you can record the screen without adding narration.
Make clicks visible
In Options, enable the setting to show mouse clicks if you are demonstrating where to click. The recording displays a black circle when you click, making pointer actions easier to follow.

Timer, save location, and format
Use the timer in Options if you need a moment to prepare before capture. Check Save to to choose a destination other than the Desktop. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, available formats include SDR (Most Compatible), which records standard dynamic range in H.264, and HDR, which uses HEVC. The choices depend on the Mac and operating system, so use the options actually shown on your device.
Use QuickTime Player if that is more convenient
- Open QuickTime Player and choose File > New Screen Recording, or press Control-Command-N.
- If this opens the Screenshot controls, follow the Screenshot steps above.
- If you see QuickTime’s older recording window instead, use the arrow beside Record to choose a microphone or whether pointer clicks are shown. Click to record the full screen, or drag to select an area and choose Start Recording.
- Stop the recording using the control shown in that interface, then save the file if QuickTime prompts you.
QuickTime’s entry point can open different interfaces. If the older recording window does not appear, use the Screenshot controls opened by the shortcut or menu command.

Find, play, or edit the recording
If you did not change Save to, look on the Desktop for the “Screen Recording” file. Open it with QuickTime Player, iMovie, or another app that can play or edit video. The floating thumbnail is a quick way to open the new recording immediately after capture.
When a screen recording does not work as expected
- The Screenshot controls do not open: Press Shift-Command-5 again, or open QuickTime Player and use File > New Screen Recording. Follow whichever interface appears.
- You cannot find the window-recording option: Selected-window capture is documented for macOS Tahoe 26 or later on supported Macs. Choose entire-screen or selected-portion recording if the option is unavailable.
- Your voice is missing: Open Options before recording and select the microphone you intend to use. Microphone input is a setting, not a requirement for making a screen recording.
- The recording is in the wrong folder: Check the Save to selection in Options; the Desktop is the default destination unless changed.
- An app window appears blank or is not captured: Some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be recorded. There is no universal workaround established for restricted windows.
Or let it run in the cloud
Screen recording on a Mac creates a saved video; it does not keep a YouTube channel live. If your separate goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not live camera capture. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
