How to Scrape Websites in Real Time

Choose static fetching for content already in HTML, browser rendering for JavaScript-dependent pages, and an asynchronous crawler for recurring site-wide collection. Set a freshness target, check access rules, and validate every result.

To scrape a website as close to real time as your project needs, fetch its HTML with an ordinary HTTP client when the data is already in the response. Use a browser when the data appears only after JavaScript runs. For recurring, multi-page collection, use a crawler that can discover pages and process them asynchronously. Define an acceptable freshness delay first: no method guarantees that every source-page change will be detected immediately.

What “real time” means for web scraping

“Real time” is a service requirement, not a particular scraping technology. Decide how long may pass between a change on the source page and your application being able to use the updated data. That end-to-end delay includes your polling or crawl schedule, retrieval and rendering time, any asynchronous job wait, and downstream processing.

There is no universal interval or end-to-end latency guarantee established for these approaches. Set a measurable target that fits your use case, then measure your own workflow rather than assuming a tool will detect changes immediately.

Choose a freshness target

  • For a page you need once, make a request when the data is needed.
  • For ongoing monitoring, choose a polling interval your project and the site can support.
  • For a site-wide collection, account for the time to submit a crawl, process its pages, and handle results.

Check the site before collecting data

Start with the exact scheme and host you intend to access. Google’s guidance explains that a robots.txt file applies to the protocol, host, and port where it is published; it belongs at that host’s root. A subdomain or a different protocol may have its own applicable rules. See Google’s robots.txt guidance.

  1. Request the target host’s root robots.txt and inspect the user-agent groups and path rules that apply to your crawler.
  2. Look for sitemap references that may help you find pages without guessing URLs.
  3. Review the site’s terms, API documentation, authentication requirements, and stated rate or data-use restrictions.
  4. If the site blocks your requests or presents a challenge, stop and use an authorized access route rather than trying to evade it.

robots.txt is not an access-control mechanism or a legal ruling. Cloudflare describes it as advisory; server-side controls such as authentication or a web application firewall are what enforce access restrictions. An allowance in the file does not by itself settle a site’s terms, a contract, privacy obligations, or the law. Whether a particular activity is permitted depends on the site, data, access method, intended use, and applicable jurisdiction. See Cloudflare’s robots.txt and sitemaps reference.

Choose the lightest method that returns the data

Approach Best fit Latency and scope Main trade-off
Direct or static HTTP fetch The required content is present in the HTML response. A request-response for a chosen URL. It may miss content that is added later by client-side JavaScript.
Browser rendering The required content depends on JavaScript execution or browser state. A page request plus browser startup, rendering, and any configured wait; commonly used for chosen pages or flows. More rendering work and additional failure modes; a rendered page can still fail or be blocked.
Managed asynchronous crawl Recurring collection across many pages, where link or sitemap discovery and crawl scope matter. Submit a job, then retrieve or poll for results as pages are processed. Requires provider workflow, scope controls, job handling, and result processing; it does not make blocked pages accessible.

These are different operating models, not a universal speed or price ranking. No independent, general-purpose benchmark establishes that one is always faster or cheaper. A vendor may offer static and rendered modes, but its published credits, quotas, and limits are vendor-specific and can change.

Fetch a page directly when its HTML has the content

Begin with a normal HTTP request. Inspect the response body and confirm that the fields you need are actually there before adding a browser. The following Python example uses only the standard library: it fetches one URL, prints the page title and text, and gives a useful error for HTTP and network failures. Replace the URL with a page you are authorized to access.

try:
    with urlopen(request, timeout=20) as response:
        content_type = response.headers.get("Content-Type", "")
        if "text/html" not in content_type.lower():
            raise ValueError(f"Expected HTML, received {content_type!r}")

parser = PageText()
parser.feed(html)
print("Title:", " ".join(parser.title_parts))
print("Text:", " ".join(parser.text_parts))

This simple parser is illustrative, not a general-purpose extractor: it does not reproduce browser layout, interpret JavaScript, or reliably identify a site’s main content. Validate the output against the fields your application expects. If the response contains an application shell but not the needed data, inspect the site’s documented API or use browser rendering where permitted.

Use browser rendering only when the page requires it

A browser is appropriate when the content appears only after scripts run, a user-visible interaction is needed, or the page depends on browser state. Wait for a meaningful selector or content signal where your tool supports it, rather than relying on a fixed delay alone. A selector wait can fail if the page changes, the selector is wrong, or the site never loads the content; set a timeout and treat that as a failed retrieval instead of saving an empty result as valid data.

For a small number of pages, a browser automation library can render the page and expose its DOM. For larger repeated jobs, compare that operational work with an extraction API or managed crawler. WebscrapingAPI.dev documents both static and headless Chrome rendering options, including selector and render waits, at its API documentation. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not universal performance results.

Use a crawler when collection spans a site

A page fetch handles a URL; a crawler handles discovery and a collection workflow. A crawler may start from a URL, follow links or sitemap entries, enforce scope and depth limits, and skip recently fetched or unchanged pages where the provider supports it.

Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering /crawl flow is asynchronous: submit a crawl, receive a job ID, then check its results as pages are processed. Its documentation describes scope controls and incremental options. Cloudflare announced the endpoint as open beta on March 10, 2026, so verify its current availability and API details before building a dependency on it: Cloudflare’s crawl announcement. The endpoint cannot bypass Cloudflare bot detection or captchas, and Cloudflare identifies itself as a bot.

Amazon’s crawler documentation is a useful reminder that directives are not interpreted identically by every crawler: Amazon says its named crawler agents do not support crawl-delay. Do not assume one service’s behavior applies to another. See Amazon’s About AmazonBot page.

Bound requests and make collection resilient

Set conservative concurrency, a finite timeout, a retry limit, and backoff between retries. Respect the target’s published limits and the selected API’s limits. Avoid tight error loops: a timeout or block repeated at high volume can worsen the problem without producing fresher data.

  • Retry transient network failures selectively, with a capped exponential backoff and jitter.
  • Do not retry indefinitely on persistent client errors, authentication failures, or access challenges.
  • Record status, source URL, retrieval time, and failure reason so an empty page is distinguishable from an extraction failure.
  • Make repeated ingestion idempotent so retries do not create duplicate records.
  • Recheck vendor documentation for quotas and response constraints before relying on them; they can change.

For context only, WebscrapingAPI.dev’s documentation reviewed October 3, 2026 lists 50,000 daily credits per account, 60 requests per minute per key, a default 15-second timeout with a 30-second maximum, and a 5 MB response-body cap. These are that vendor’s published limits, not general scraping limits or a benchmark; verify the documentation for current values before use.

Validate results and detect changes

Do not treat a successful HTTP response as proof that the data is correct. Check each result against an expected schema and keep the source URL and retrieval timestamp with the record. Alert on unexpected empty results, missing required fields, or structural changes so that a changed page is not silently ingested as good data.

For recurring collection, compare normalized records or relevant fields rather than assuming every fetch indicates a meaningful update. Retain and use only data permitted by the target’s terms and applicable requirements. There is no single storage or change-detection design that fits every site.

Or skip the browser setup

If the result you need is a clean visual snapshot rather than structured text or fields, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot through one GET request. It is a screenshot API, not a substitute for extracting structured page data.

The API can accept or remove cookie and consent banners before capture and remove known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The response is HTML, but the needed fields are missing. The content is rendered after JavaScript runs, or the page shell loads data separately. Check whether the site documents an API; otherwise use browser rendering and wait for a concrete content signal.
A browser wait times out. The selector is outdated or incorrect, content did not load, or the site is blocked. Inspect the rendered page and selector, use a bounded wait, and classify the attempt as failed if the expected content never appears.
A crawl job has no results yet. The managed crawl is asynchronous and pages may still be processing. Use the provider’s documented job workflow to check status and handle partial results; do not assume submission means completion.
Requests return a challenge, CAPTCHA, or block. The site or its protection layer is rejecting the automated access. Stop automated retries and seek an authorized API or permission; do not attempt to evade the challenge.
Results suddenly become empty or malformed. The page structure may have changed, retrieval may have failed, or an empty state may be legitimate. Keep fetch errors separate from valid empty data, validate required fields, and alert on schema changes.
Repeated requests are slow or fail intermittently. Concurrency, waits, timeouts, target limits, or transient network failures may be contributing. Reduce concurrency, set finite waits and timeouts, retry only transient failures with backoff, and check published limits.

A September 2026 arXiv preprint proposes terms.txt for machine-access terms and reports 0.20 to 0.65 ms of additional overhead per request for its own dependency-free implementation on one vCPU. That narrow implementation result is not a general scraping speed benchmark, and the preprint does not establish terms.txt as an adopted web standard.
