There is no Google-documented general API for scraping public Google Shopping search results. Google’s Merchant API is for authorized access to a merchant’s own Merchant Center data, not a public-results endpoint. If you need your own catalog data, use the Merchant API or Merchant Center feeds. If you need public results, first check Google’s current terms and machine-readable instructions, applicable law, and whether your intended use is permitted; don’t treat an unsupported page scraper as a stable or approved API.
First decide which Google Shopping data you need
“Google Shopping API” can mean two different things. Google’s Merchant API supports merchant-account data management, including products, inventory, and reporting. Public Shopping search results are a separate use case: the official documentation reviewed does not describe a general API for retrieving them.

For a merchant’s own data, use the documented merchant route
Google announced Merchant API in August 2025 as the successor and primary interface replacing Content API for Shopping. Google’s announcement said Content API would be shut down after August 18, 2026. Since API lifecycle and migration details can change, verify the current status and version in Google’s Merchant API documentation before building or migrating an integration.

- Confirm the data belongs to an account you are authorized to access. The Merchant API is for Merchant Center account data, and access requires account permissions and OAuth 2.0.
- Choose the documented operation for your need. The API documentation covers account, product, and inventory management and performance reporting. Do not substitute it for public Shopping query results.
- Use product feeds or structured data for product submission. These are merchant-to-Google data-sharing routes, not public-results extraction methods.
- Validate freshness before relying on values. Product information and synchronization across product sources can lag, and price or availability can change. Retain the source and retrieval time in any comparison workflow.
If you need public results, assess the constraints before automating
Google’s Terms of Service cover Google Shopping and say automated access is prohibited when it violates machine-readable instructions on Google pages, citing robots.txt disallow rules as an example. The terms also prohibit bypassing systems or protective measures. This is Google’s stated service rule; it is not a conclusion that every scraping method is lawful or unlawful in every jurisdiction.

- Do not build a workflow around CAPTCHA avoidance, identity concealment, proxy rotation to evade controls, or other protective-measure bypasses.
- Do not assume a selector, page structure, or result field will remain stable. The public interface is not documented as a supported scraping contract.
- Before collecting, storing, or republishing results, assess applicable local law, privacy and intellectual-property issues, and the permissions attached to the data.
The available material does not settle jurisdiction-specific legal outcomes or whether a particular dataset may be republished. If those questions matter to your project, obtain advice based on your location, method, and use of the data.
Design a comparison workflow that can be checked
When access is authorized, define the dataset and validation rules before collecting anything. Shopping results can vary with country, language, device, query, seller, and product variations; there is not one universal result page or field set to rely on.

- Specify the scope: record the country, language, query, and product or seller coverage you need.
- Define the fields: identify the product, seller, price, and availability information necessary for your use; avoid collecting fields you do not need.
- Set comparison rules: decide how you will handle product variants, shipping, promotions, currencies, and missing or ambiguous values.
- Track freshness: store collection time and revalidate time-sensitive prices and availability before making decisions based on them.
- Make the method reproducible: document the access route, terms and instructions checked, query parameters, and validation steps. Review these again when the service or your use changes.
For scale estimates, keep historical figures dated: Google said on February 7, 2023 that the Shopping Graph then stored more than 35 billion product listings. That is a 2023 figure, not a current listing count.

Questions to settle before choosing an approach
- Do you control the Merchant Center account? If yes, Merchant API may fit catalog, inventory, or reporting needs. If not, it is not a route to public search results.
- Do you need data or a visual record? Structured, comparable product fields and a screenshot serve different purposes; a screenshot does not reliably provide a normalized dataset.
- Can you justify the access and use? Check current terms, machine-readable instructions, legal requirements, privacy and intellectual-property considerations, and any republication plans.
- Can you maintain the data quality? Plan for variation by locale and query, changing prices and availability, missing fields, and possible synchronization lag.

Is scraping Google Shopping legal?
That cannot be answered universally from the available sources. Applicable law depends on jurisdiction, method, and intended use, and Google’s stated terms and machine-readable instructions also matter.
