The timer handles when the job runs; your script handles what to add, move, or remove.
How the pieces fit together
A systemd timer activates a unit, usually a service with the same base name. For example, playlist-update.timer can activate playlist-update.service, which runs your script. Use OnCalendar= for a wall-clock schedule. If you want a missed calendar run to happen once after the timer becomes active again, set Persistent=true. Check the installed systemd.timer(5) manual for directives supported by your Linux system; the upstream manual documents options introduced across different systemd releases.

The service needs a script that authenticates to YouTube with OAuth and makes the relevant playlist-item API request. An API key alone is not the documented authorization for playlist writes. The official YouTube documentation explains playlist operations and OAuth authorization in its playlist implementation guide and OAuth 2.0 guide.

Add a video
Call playlistItems.insert with the target playlist ID in snippet.playlistId and the video’s ID in snippet.resourceId. The request requires OAuth. If you specify a position, the playlist must use manual ordering. Some system playlists, including the uploaded-videos playlist, do not support these operations. See Google’s playlistItems.insert reference.

Move an existing video
First list the playlist items and retain the item’s playlist-item ID. Then call playlistItems.update, including the playlist ID, the video resource ID, and snippet.position. Positions are zero-based, so position 0 is the first item. The update requires OAuth. Be careful with the selected part: omitted existing values in the parts being updated may be deleted, so preserve mutable values you intend to keep. Google’s playlistItems.update reference documents the request fields and behavior.
Remove a video
Call playlistItems.delete with the playlist-item ID. That identifier is not the same as the video’s ID. Consult the YouTube Data API Reference for the current method details.
Create a service and timer
Keep playlist logic in a script that you can run and diagnose on its own. The following units show the structure; replace the example script path and schedule with your own. Unit-file locations vary by distribution and by whether you want a system-wide or user service, so use the appropriate location for your installation.
Service unit
Create playlist-update.service:

Replace YOUR_LINUX_USER, the working directory, and the executable path. The service runs as the selected user, so that account must be able to read the script, configuration, and OAuth credentials it needs.

This example schedules a daily calendar run at 09:00 according to the host’s applicable local-time configuration. Confirm the expression on your machine rather than assuming all systemd versions interpret or support every directive identically. The timer manual describes OnCalendar=, Persistent=, randomized delay, and other trigger forms: systemd.timer manual.
Enable and inspect the timer

Reload unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadfor system units, orsystemctl --user daemon-reloadfor user units. -
Enable and start the timer:

Check its state and next trigger with

Run the service once manually to test it:
sudo systemctl start playlist-update.service. Then inspect logs withjournalctl -u playlist-update.service; for a user unit, usejournalctl --user -u playlist-update.service.
These commands are operational examples, not a complete OAuth setup or a distribution-specific deployment recipe. The YouTube documentation does not prescribe a Linux token-storage scheme. Choose and protect a credential-storage and token-refresh approach appropriate to your host and application.
Make the scheduled change reliable

Set the service’s user, working directory, executable path, and required environment explicitly. A scheduled service should not depend on an interactive shell’s current directory,

Make the script exit unsuccessfully when the API request fails, so systemd records a failed run instead of a false success.

Where practical, check current playlist state before acting: avoid inserting a duplicate, and confirm the target item still exists before deleting or moving it. These are implementation practices; the API does not guarantee that a script is repeat-safe.

Choose the schedule deliberately. Calendar triggers suit wall-clock times; elapsed-interval triggers suit recurring delays. Consult the local manual for exact directive semantics.
Persistent=trueis for calendar timers and runs a missed event after timer reactivation. -
If many jobs would start together, consider randomized delay. It spreads starts over an interval and adds delay to the next determined elapse, so it is not appropriate when execution must happen at an exact time.

For a specified insertion position, verify that the playlist is manually ordered. If it uses a different ordering mode, do not assume a requested position will work.

Quota and schedule frequency
Google’s insert and update method pages list a quota impact of 50 units per call. That is a method-specific documented figure and may change; check current quota guidance before building a high-frequency job. Deletion and other API operations have their own method documentation, so do not apply the insert/update figure to every request.
Troubleshoot common failures
The timer is active but no playlist change appears
Check systemctl list-timers for the next trigger, then inspect the service journal for its last run and exit status. Start the service manually to separate a scheduling problem from a script or API problem.
The API rejects a write
Confirm the script has valid OAuth authorization at runtime; an API key alone is not the documented authorization for these write methods. For insertion at a position, confirm manual playlist ordering. Also check that the target is not a restricted system playlist such as the uploaded-videos playlist.

Check that the script distinguishes the video ID from the playlist-item ID. Updates and deletions target playlist items; list the playlist and retain the correct item ID before acting.
A move removes data you expected to retain
Review the update request’s selected part and include mutable values that must remain. The API update documentation warns that omitted values in selected parts may be deleted.
The script works in a terminal but fails on schedule
Inspect the unit’s user, WorkingDirectory=, executable path, environment, file permissions, and credential access. Scheduled services do not automatically inherit your interactive shell setup.
