In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Manage > Schedule stream. YouTube handles the scheduled event and its YouTube stream URL and key; whether one encoder can send to multiple RTMP destinations at once depends on that encoder’s documented capabilities.
What scheduling does—and what multiple RTMP outputs require
A scheduled YouTube livestream creates an upcoming event that you can promote and share. Viewers can visit its watch page and opt into reminders. Scheduling does not, by itself, configure multiple RTMP outputs: those must be set up in an encoder that explicitly supports simultaneous destinations.
YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to schedule an event and connect an encoder, but it does not certify third-party encoders or their multi-output limits. Before relying on a multi-destination setup, check the current documentation for the specific encoder and confirm both the supported number of concurrent outputs and the destinations it can send to.
Schedule the YouTube event
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open Manage.
- Create the scheduled event: Select Schedule stream. Reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new one.
- Set up the event details: Review the scheduled stream’s metadata and settings. Its upcoming watch page and shareable URL let you promote the event in advance; viewers can choose to receive a reminder.
- Keep the event URL handy: The scheduled event is the one you will check in Live Control Room when the encoder starts sending. For its YouTube output, use the stream URL and stream key shown for that event.
Connect the encoder and configure multiple RTMP outputs
- Find the YouTube connection details: Use the scheduled event’s YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; after resetting, replace the old key in the encoder.
- Check the encoder’s current documentation: Confirm it can send the required number of simultaneous RTMP outputs. Do not infer multi-output support from the fact that an encoder can connect to YouTube; the YouTube help pages do not establish third-party encoder compatibility.
- Map each output deliberately: Enter the correct RTMP destination details for each intended output and verify which scheduled event or destination each one is associated with. YouTube’s setup instructions cover the YouTube connection, not how a particular encoder labels, routes, or limits other outputs.
- Test before the event: Start the encoder early enough to check that the scheduled YouTube event receives a preview. For other destinations, check their own current setup guidance and confirm each output is reaching the intended service.
Prepare, preview, and start at airtime
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before. Use that early window to verify the encoder connection, inspect the preview in Live Control Room, test audio and video, and monitor stream health. The preview is your last practical check before making the YouTube event live.

- Start sending from the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Wait for the video preview to appear in Live Control Room and check that the picture and sound are correct.
- When ready, select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Monitor the stream during the event and confirm the other configured outputs are also behaving as expected in the encoder or destination interfaces.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archiving statement concerns YouTube streams; it does not establish what happens to recordings on other destinations.
Choose software or hardware based on the production
YouTube includes software encoding programs among the encoder options and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Hardware is optional: choose based on your production requirements, equipment, and the specific encoder’s documented ability to send the required outputs. YouTube’s guidance does not compare brands or models, so verify multi-output support for the exact product and configuration you plan to use.
