To reduce the data used by a 24/7 YouTube playlist, lower the live encoder’s sustained bitrate—usually by choosing a lower resolution or frame rate that still looks good for your content. Then test the actual upload connection, leave bandwidth headroom, and check YouTube’s stream health. The main control is the live stream’s bitrate; a better cable may stabilize a connection, but it does not reduce the amount of data sent at a given bitrate.

What “upload size” means for a live stream

For an encoder-based YouTube Live broadcast, “upload size” usually means the data your streaming setup sends continuously to YouTube. It is not the same as the size of a finished video file uploaded to YouTube. Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance for a live feed; its separate recommended upload encoding settings concern finished video uploads.

The encoder’s bitrate is the primary driver of outgoing data. A lower bitrate generally means less data transferred, but can reduce image quality. Resolution and frame rate affect how much bitrate a picture needs to look acceptable. Choose the quality target for the actual material rather than automatically selecting the highest setting.

Choose a lower live bitrate without guessing

YouTube’s live encoder settings page gives these H.264 examples. They are recommendations for live ingestion, not guarantees of image quality for every source or mandatory minimums. Check the current page for the exact combination and codec you use.

Example live setting YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate Approximate data per 24 hours at that constant rate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 43.2 GB
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 64.8 GB
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 108 GB

The daily figures are arithmetic estimates using decimal network units: bitrate in megabits per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8. They are not YouTube-published data-use statistics; actual transfer can vary with audio, protocol overhead, bitrate behavior, and any backup feed. The examples are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026; that page does not show a publication year.

Set the target for the material

  • Decide what viewers need to see. A mostly static scene may remain acceptable at a lower resolution or frame rate than fast-moving, detailed footage, but test your own playlist before settling on a setting.
  • Pick a supported resolution and frame rate, then use the corresponding bitrate guidance for the codec and ingest path your encoder supports. YouTube’s live settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, with codec-dependent guidance.
  • Do not assume that reducing resolution alone will reduce data if the configured bitrate stays the same. To reduce sustained transfer, lower the bitrate setting as well, while checking whether the resulting picture is still usable.

Use the live encoder settings YouTube specifies

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS where available for encrypted transport. Set these in the encoder you use, and verify that its output matches the selected YouTube stream settings.

Check upload capacity and leave headroom

The stream must fit within the connection’s available outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room rather than using all available upload capacity. If you send a primary and backup feed, account for both feeds’ bitrate. A speed test should reflect the actual streaming machine, connection, and typical network use: download speed alone does not establish upload capacity.

In India, there is no separate India-only bitrate in the official settings cited here. Your practical limit depends on the ISP, plan, location, time-of-day congestion, and other devices sharing the connection. Check whether your plan’s upload capacity and data allowance suit continuous use, and test the connection where the streaming setup will run.

YouTube recommends Ethernet for a computer-based fixed streaming rig. A wired connection can help avoid some wireless instability, but it will not lower bitrate or reduce data transferred when the encoder sends at the same bitrate.

Test the playlist before leaving it live

  1. Confirm channel eligibility: YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube Studio before configuring a long-running stream.
  2. Configure the encoder: Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode, keyframe interval, and RTMPS option where available. Use the current YouTube live encoder table for the selected combination.
  3. Measure under realistic conditions: Run an upload speed test from the streaming setup, consider other network use, and keep the recommended 20% bandwidth room. Include a backup feed if you send one.
  4. Run an unlisted test: Check that the video and audio play as intended and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring during a broadcast.
  5. Monitor the continuous stream: Watch for dropped frames, connection warnings, or changes in available upload bandwidth. If the stream becomes unstable, reduce the encoder bitrate or address network contention, then test again.

Estimate data use for a 24/7 schedule

Multiply the configured bitrate by streaming time to estimate outgoing data. At a constant 4 Mbps, for example, the arithmetic estimate is about 43.2 GB per day, or about 1,296 GB over 30 days. At 6 Mbps it is about 64.8 GB per day, or 1,944 GB over 30 days; at 10 Mbps, about 108 GB per day, or 3,240 GB over 30 days. These monthly estimates simply multiply the daily nominal-rate calculation by 30. They are not exact ISP-meter readings and exclude variation and any additional backup feed.

YouTube Help’s Filming tips – Live gives “about 10 MB of data per 1 minute” as a mobile live-streaming rule of thumb. That is framed for mobile streaming; do not treat it as a precise monthly estimate for an encoder-based 24/7 broadcast.

Troubleshoot high data use or an unstable stream

  • Data use is higher than expected: Check the encoder’s actual outgoing bitrate and whether a backup feed is also running. Calculate from the bitrate and total hours rather than applying YouTube’s mobile rule of thumb to an encoder stream.
  • The picture is poor after reducing bitrate: Test a different balance of resolution and frame rate, especially for fast motion or fine detail. Use YouTube’s guidance for that combination and judge the result from an unlisted test.
  • The stream buffers or loses health despite an adequate speed test: Leave the recommended 20% upload headroom, test from the streaming machine, and account for shared-network use and congestion. A speed result from another device or time may not reflect the stream’s actual conditions.
  • You are considering a new cable to save data: Ethernet may help a fixed setup’s connection stability, but it does not change the encoder bitrate or the data transferred at that rate.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube playlist that should stay live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; streams run at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
