To schedule website screenshots with Selenium Grid, use an external scheduler to start a script or test job, let Selenium Grid provide the remote browser session, and save the screenshot through WebDriver to storage managed by your runner. Grid routes browser sessions; it is not a calendar scheduler or screenshot archive.
What Selenium Grid does—and what schedules the job
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver sessions to available browser nodes that match requested capabilities. A CI schedule, operating-system scheduler, or other job runner decides when your screenshot process runs. Your code navigates to the page, waits for it to be ready, captures the image, and stores it.
The usual request flow is: a client sends a new-session request to the Router; the request waits in the New Session Queue; the Distributor assigns it to a Node with matching capabilities. The Router then forwards commands for that session to its Node. If matching browser slots are occupied, new requests may wait in the queue. Selenium Grid architecture
Choose a Grid topology

The default Router, Hub, or Standalone entry point is port 4444, but confirm the actual Grid URL and network route in your deployment. Check that the Grid is available in its UI or with its /status endpoint before launching a capture job. Selenium Grid documentation

Build a scheduled screenshot job
- Start Grid and verify availability. Confirm that the runner can reach the deployed Grid URL and that the UI or
/statusreports it ready. - Request the browser you need. Create a
RemoteWebDriverpointed at the Grid URL and set capabilities such as browser name, browser version, and platform. Grid assigns a Node when a slot matches. - Navigate and wait for page-specific readiness. Navigation completing does not guarantee that asynchronous content, fonts, or images have finished loading. Wait for a selector or other meaningful condition on the page.
- Capture and store the screenshot. Use the WebDriver screenshot API and write the returned image to a directory or artifact store managed by your test runner or CI system.
- Always close the session. Put
driver.quit()in a cleanup path so a failed navigation or capture does not leave a Node slot occupied. - Set the cadence in your scheduler. Configure your CI schedule or operating-system job scheduler to invoke the process as often as needed. The interval is a deployment choice, not a Grid calendar feature.
Java example: one page capture per job run
This example uses Selenium’s Java binding and writes the viewport screenshot to a local file. Replace the Grid endpoint and target URL, and add a page-specific readiness condition before capture. The CI runner can collect the output directory as a job artifact.

For recurring visual comparisons, keep the requested browser and version, viewport dimensions, device scale settings, and page state consistent; otherwise a changed image may reflect different capture conditions rather than a site change.

Viewport and element capture
The example captures what the browser screenshot API returns for the current page view. Selenium’s examples also show capturing an individual element. Do not assume a portable full-document screenshot from the standard WebDriver screenshot call: full-page behavior should be verified for the chosen browser, driver, and language binding before relying on it. Schedule and scale capture workers
Set the schedule outside Grid, then size the worker pool around matching browser slots and machine capacity. More concurrent jobs than available slots can create queue delays; adding nodes can help only if the machines and browser matrix support the requested sessions.

Selenium’s sizing guidance gives approximately 1 GB of RAM per browser session as a reference expectation, not a guarantee or benchmark. Actual demand depends on the browser and operating-system matrix, concurrency, machine power, and the pages being captured. Start with defaults as a baseline, then measure your own workload. - Track session creation time and time spent waiting for a slot.
- Measure page-load and capture duration, memory and CPU use, and failure rate.
- Set concurrency based on available slots and headroom, not an assumed universal node count or screenshots-per-minute figure.
- Decide how long screenshots should be retained and how operators retrieve them; that responsibility belongs to your runner or artifact storage, not Grid.
Secure and operate the Grid
Restrict access to the Grid endpoint with appropriate network controls. Selenium warns that exposing Grid to external access can expose infrastructure, internal applications, and files, and can allow others to run custom binaries. For diagnosis, log the target URL, requested capabilities, session ID, capture outcome, and artifact location. These details help distinguish a scheduling delay, capability mismatch, page failure, and storage problem.
