To schedule website screenshots with Azure Functions, use a Timer trigger to run application code on an NCRONTAB schedule. The trigger supplies the cadence; your code still needs a browser or screenshot service to capture the page and a destination for the resulting file. Microsoft’s Azure Functions documentation covers the timer and platform setup, but does not provide an end-to-end recipe for launching a headless browser from a timer function and storing screenshots.
How the scheduled screenshot workflow fits together
A typical workflow has three separate parts:
- Schedule: An Azure Functions Timer trigger invokes your function at the cadence you specify.
- Capture: Your function or a service it calls opens the target site and creates an image or PDF.
- Storage: Your code writes the artifact to a destination chosen for your retention, access, and security needs.
The Microsoft sources cited here establish the timer mechanism, deployment fundamentals, and Azure Functions’ storage requirement. They do not establish a supported, general-purpose browser-launch and screenshot-upload implementation for every Functions hosting plan. Treat browser runtime compatibility and artifact storage as design decisions to validate separately.

Choose a schedule and understand its timezone
Azure Functions Timer triggers use NCRONTAB expressions. The expression has six fields, including seconds. For example, 0 0 9 * * * requests execution at 9:00 each day in the schedule’s effective timezone. By default, that timezone is UTC, so this expression means 9:00 UTC unless you configure a supported timezone.
| Cadence | NCRONTAB expression | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Every minute | 0 */1 * * * * |
At second zero of every minute. |
| Every hour | 0 0 */1 * * * |
At minute zero of every hour. |
| Daily at 9:00 | 0 0 9 * * * |
At 9:00 in the effective timezone; UTC by default. |
Microsoft’s Timer trigger reference describes timezone configuration and hosting-plan differences. Windows timezone settings use Windows timezone names; Linux Premium and Dedicated plans use timezone database names. Linux Consumption and Flex Consumption do not support WEBSITE_TIME_ZONE or TZ. Microsoft warns that using these settings on unsupported plans can cause SSL-related problems and broken metrics. If the capture must follow local wall-clock time, confirm your operating system and plan support the intended timezone setting before deploying; daylight-saving changes can also affect local-time schedules.

You can put a schedule in an app setting and reference it in the timer binding with percent signs, which lets you change cadence without editing the function code. See the Timer trigger reference for the binding syntax. A TimeSpan schedule is limited to an App Service Plan in the Timer reference; Consumption and Flex Consumption scale controllers require CRON expressions.
Develop and deploy the timer function
Microsoft’s scheduled-tasks quickstart walks through creating a timer-triggered function locally and deploying it to Flex Consumption. Follow its language-specific steps for the supported Functions programming model you are using; the timer schedule is the same architectural piece regardless of where capture happens.

- Set up the local prerequisites described in the quickstart for your language, Azure Functions Core Tools, and local storage emulation. The quickstart uses Azurite for the host’s
AzureWebJobsStorageconnection. - Create a timer-triggered function and configure its NCRONTAB schedule. Use a short interval while validating timer execution, then set the intended production cadence.
- Run locally and inspect logs to confirm the host invokes the function at the expected times. Microsoft’s portal tutorial also demonstrates checking timer execution in logs and changing the schedule.
- Deploy to Azure using the quickstart’s workflow and the target plan’s documented prerequisites. Verify the deployed app’s configuration and logs after deployment rather than assuming local timezone or storage settings carry over unchanged.
This gives you a working scheduled invocation, not a complete screenshot job. Add and validate the browser or external capture call and artifact-writing code for your selected runtime, target site, and storage destination before relying on the workflow.
Keep timer storage separate from screenshot storage
Azure Functions requires access to a default Azure Storage account. Microsoft’s storage considerations explain that Blob, Files, Queue, and Table storage support different Functions runtime needs. The account used for Functions runtime operations is not automatically the right place, container, or access policy for your generated screenshots. Choose the artifact destination explicitly and define retention, permissions, and how downstream users will retrieve files.

Validate the browser and capture design independently
Before implementing browser capture inside a function, verify that the browser runtime and binaries are compatible with the selected Functions plan and operating system. Also check memory and execution-duration requirements, site authentication and network access, and how the capture code reports navigation and upload failures. The Microsoft sources listed here do not provide a complete supported example covering browser launch, navigation, screenshot creation, and artifact upload from a timer function.
Microsoft documents Playwright Workspaces in Foundry browser automation as headless browser infrastructure, including screenshot recording during active sessions. That is a related managed-browser option to investigate, not evidence that Playwright can run in every Azure Functions plan or an established timer-trigger integration.

Make scheduled runs observable and deliberate
Timer monitoring persists schedule occurrences to help maintain schedules through app restarts. Timer-trigger examples also expose whether an invocation is past due. Neither fact supplies a screenshot-specific retry or duplicate-handling policy, so decide how your application should behave when a run is late or a step fails.

- Log the scheduled invocation, target URL, capture result, and artifact destination without recording secrets such as cookies or authorization values.
- Decide whether a missed invocation should be skipped, run once as soon as possible, or trigger a separate recovery process.
- Make repeated runs safe for your storage design—for example, decide whether each run gets a unique timestamped name or replaces a known latest-image object.
- Handle navigation, timeout, and storage failures explicitly; choose whether to retry and prevent a retry from silently producing confusing duplicate artifacts.
Leave runOnStartup false for a predictable recurring schedule unless startup execution is intentional. The Timer reference warns that startup can invoke a function when the host starts, restarts, wakes, or scales; extra runs may also increase Consumption charges. Microsoft says runOnStartup should rarely if ever be set to
true, especially in production.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The function runs at an unexpected local hour. | The schedule is using UTC, or the timezone setting is unsupported or configured with the wrong name. | Confirm the effective timezone and plan support in the Timer trigger reference. Do not set WEBSITE_TIME_ZONE or TZ on Linux Consumption or Flex Consumption. |
| The function runs on host startup as well as on schedule. | runOnStartup is enabled. |
Remove or disable it unless startup invocation is a deliberate requirement; Microsoft cautions against it in production. |
| The local Functions host cannot use storage. | The AzureWebJobsStorage connection is missing or its local emulator is not available. |
Follow the scheduled-task quickstart’s local Azurite setup and confirm the connection configuration. |
| The timer fires, but no screenshot appears. | The timer only invokes code; it does not itself launch a browser, capture a page, or choose a file destination. | Inspect function logs and separately validate browser compatibility, navigation, screenshot creation, and the artifact write. |
| A schedule behaves differently after deployment. | Local and deployed app settings, timezone, or hosting plan differ. | Compare deployed configuration with the local setup and verify the schedule in Azure logs using the portal tutorial’s workflow. |
