How the setup works
The practical arrangement is a host computer that remains available, an authenticated ADB connection to the tablet, and a Node.js script using Playwright’s Android API:

This is not the same as running a conventional headless browser on the host. Chrome runs on the Android device; the host schedules and controls the capture. Playwright’s Android support is experimental and supports Chrome for Android and Android WebView. Some functionality may not work, and compatibility is not guaranteed for every device.

Prepare the tablet and host
- An Android device or Android Virtual Device (AVD) emulator.
- ADB installed and running on the host, with the device connection authenticated.
- Chrome 87 or newer on the device, as specified by Playwright’s Android documentation.
- In Chrome, open
chrome://flagsand enable Enable command line on non-rooted devices. - Keep the tablet awake when the scheduled capture runs. Playwright says the device must be awake to produce screenshots.
- Node.js and the Playwright package installed on the host.
Playwright’s Android API uses ADB; it does not provide direct raw USB control. A wired setup may need a data-capable cable and ports that match the tablet and host. Confirm that ADB can see and authenticate the device before troubleshooting Playwright itself.
Check ADB first
With the tablet connected and its authorization prompt accepted, run:
adb devicesThe tablet should appear as an authorized device rather than unauthorized. If it does not appear, resolve the USB, ADB, or authorization issue before continuing. A network ADB setup is possible in some environments, but secure it and confirm connectivity independently.
Install Playwright and capture a page manually
Start with a manual capture. This separates browser or device problems from scheduling problems. In a new project directory, initialize Node and install Playwright:

}This follows Playwright’s documented Android sequence: connect to a device, launch Chrome, open a page, and call page.screenshot. The documentation does not prescribe one readiness wait that suits every site. For a page that renders content after the initial HTML, wait for a meaningful selector or application-ready state; a fixed sleep may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
Choose the screenshot type

The general Playwright screenshot guide also documents returning a screenshot buffer instead of saving directly to a path. Choose page, full-page, element, or device capture according to what the downstream process needs.
Schedule recurring captures in India
Once a manual run succeeds, schedule the same script on the host. GitHub Actions is one option; a continuously available Linux host can instead use its own scheduler. In either case, check the scheduler’s timezone and whether the host and tablet will be available at run time.

retention-days: 7This example assumes a self-hosted GitHub Actions runner with ADB and the tablet already connected and authorized. A hosted runner generally cannot reach a tablet physically attached to your own computer. GitHub’s schedule syntax documentation says schedules default to UTC, supports an optional IANA timezone, and has a shortest interval of five minutes. Confirm that the timezone field is supported by the workflow configuration you use. If you use UTC cron instead, convert the intended India time to UTC rather than treating cron as local time.
A scheduled trigger is not a promise of exact wall-clock delivery. GitHub does not establish an India-specific start-time guarantee in that reference, so allow for timing variation and verify actual artifact timestamps. For a local Linux scheduler, likewise confirm its timezone, restart behavior, and that the machine stays on.
Save and retain the output reliably
Give every run a predictable directory and a unique filename, such as a site label plus an ISO timestamp, so a later capture does not overwrite the earlier one. Decide where images should live and how long to keep them: the workflow example uploads them as artifacts for seven days, while another workflow may copy them to durable storage.

- Verify the image exists and is non-empty after capture.
- Inspect a sample image rather than treating a successful job status as proof that the page rendered correctly.
- Choose a retention period that fits the purpose and available storage.
- For sensitive pages, restrict access to both the screenshot files and the automation host.
Saving a screenshot to a path is documented by Playwright; storage retention and artifact availability depend on the destination and its configuration.
Secure Playwright’s Android connection
Keep the Playwright Android WebSocket server bound to localhost unless you have designed a protected remote-control setup. Playwright defaults the WebSocket host to localhost. Binding it to a network interface can expose device control to systems that can reach the listening port; the Android API documentation warns that knowing the WebSocket path can allow control of the operating-system user.
- Do not expose the endpoint publicly as an unauthenticated service.
- Restrict network reachability if remote access is necessary.
- Use an unguessable WebSocket path and protect the host and its credentials.
- Keep the tablet and runner on a trusted network and limit who can access saved captures.
Host scheduling versus Android-native scheduling

The host-scheduled design is the more directly documented route for this workflow. Android-native scheduling is not impossible, but it requires an app-level implementation; the official Android alarm guidance discusses time-based alarms, exact-alarm permissions, and alternatives such as WorkManager or JobScheduler. That guidance does not establish a ready-made, reliable Playwright tablet workflow.
Troubleshoot failed or empty captures
- No device found: Check
adb devices, the data connection, ADB status, and whether the tablet authorization prompt was accepted. - Device is unauthorized: Unlock the tablet, accept the debugging authorization prompt, then check ADB again.
- Chrome will not launch: Confirm Chrome is installed and meets Playwright’s Chrome 87-or-newer requirement; confirm the named command-line flag is enabled.
- Screenshot call fails while scheduled: The tablet may be asleep, disconnected, or unavailable to the runner. Keep it awake and test the same script in the scheduled environment.
- Image is blank or incomplete: Wait for a page-specific selector or readiness signal after navigation; inspect the URL and page state before saving.
- Script works manually but not in GitHub Actions: Confirm the job runs on the self-hosted runner that can access ADB, and check its installed Node version, working directory, permissions, and artifact path.
- Run starts at an unexpected time: Check the schedule timezone field or recalculate the cron expression in UTC. The default is UTC unless an IANA timezone is configured.
- Remote control connection is exposed: Stop the server, restore localhost binding, and review network reachability and WebSocket path protection before restarting.

Does scheduling a capture mean the screenshot will be available at the exact scheduled minute?
No. A scheduled trigger starts a job but does not by itself guarantee exact delivery time, successful rendering, or artifact retention.
