To run a website screenshot at 9:00 AM Indian Standard Time, configure the scheduler to evaluate its schedule in Asia/Kolkata, then use the cron expression 0 9 * * *. The cron expression itself does not specify a timezone: Linux Cronie supports CRON_TZ, Google Cloud Scheduler has a timezone setting and defaults to UTC, and Kubernetes CronJobs use spec.timeZone. After scheduling, a browser-automation script must load the page, wait for the right content, and save the screenshot.
How cron timing in IST works
A cron expression supplies calendar fields, not a timezone. The scheduler or cron daemon interprets those fields against its configured clock. For a daily run at 9:00 AM in India, the intended expression is 0 9 * * *, evaluated in Asia/Kolkata. The five fields are minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. See the Linux crontab(5) manual for the field format and Cronie’s CRON_TZ behavior.

Scheduling time and the timezone shown inside the website are separate concerns. The scheduler timezone decides when the capture script starts. Playwright’s browser-context timezoneId changes the timezone emulated for page content; it does not change when cron runs. Set it to Asia/Kolkata only if the page should render dates or other timezone-sensitive content as though the visitor were in India. Playwright documents this option in its BrowserType reference.

On a Cronie or compatible cron implementation that supports CRON_TZ, add a timezone line followed by the job. Replace paths with ones that exist on your host:

Cron’s environment differs from an interactive shell, so use explicit paths for the Node executable, script, and output/log locations. Ensure the cron user can execute the script and write the output and log files.
CRON_TZ is not universal across every cron implementation. Check the installed daemon and its documentation before relying on it; Debian’s Cronie crontab(5) reference also documents the variable. The timezone printed in logs may reflect the daemon’s local timezone even when the schedule is evaluated using CRON_TZ.

Capture the page with Playwright
Cron only starts the job; browser automation does the capture. Install Playwright and its browser dependencies for the account that will run the job, then adapt this script to the target site and output directory. The example uses a full-page image and waits for DOM content to load; for a real site, replace that navigation condition with a page-specific readiness signal when necessary.

Full-page capture includes the scrollable document, but long pages produce taller files and may require more storage and processing.

The sample writes to a fixed filename, so each successful run replaces the previous image. Use timestamped or otherwise unique filenames if you need to retain a history. For repeatable visual comparisons, keep the browser, operating system, browser version, settings, and execution mode consistent where practical. Rendering can vary across environments, as Playwright explains in its visual comparisons documentation; dynamic ads, animations, clocks, and personalized sessions can also change the result.
Configure other schedulers for IST
Google Cloud Scheduler
Enter the cron expression, such as 0 9 * * *, and set the schedule timezone to Asia/Kolkata. Google Cloud Scheduler defaults to UTC, so leaving the timezone unchanged would not mean 9:00 AM IST. Google notes that daylight-saving transitions can cause anomalies for schedules in affected timezones; IST does not normally observe seasonal clock changes. Set the CronJob’s timezone field rather than putting a timezone directive in the schedule:

timeZone: "Asia/Kolkata"Use spec.timeZone only where the deployed Kubernetes version supports it. Kubernetes explicitly does not support CRON_TZ or TZ embedded in .spec.schedule. Job creation is approximate: Kubernetes documents that a job may be missed or duplicated in some circumstances. Make the capture safe to repeat or detect duplicate outputs if that matters to your workflow. Consult the Kubernetes CronJob documentation for version and behavior details.

Make scheduled captures reliable
- Wait for meaningful readiness. A successful navigation event does not always mean a single-page app, chart, or delayed image is ready. Wait for a selector or other condition that reflects the content you need before taking the screenshot.
- Separate schedule timezone from page timezone. Set the scheduler to IST for a 9:00 AM India-time run. Set Playwright’s
timezoneIdonly when the rendered page should also see IST. - Choose output behavior deliberately. Confirm the destination directory exists and is writable by the cron user. Fixed names overwrite; timestamped names preserve runs but accumulate files.
- Keep the capture environment stable for comparison. Browser and operating-system differences affect rendering. Dynamic page elements may also change even when the capture code does not.
- Inspect logs and result files. Redirecting standard output and errors to a log helps distinguish scheduler failures from browser, navigation, permission, and page-readiness failures.
Troubleshooting
- The job runs at the wrong hour: Check which timezone the scheduler evaluates. Linux cron may not support
CRON_TZ; Google Cloud Scheduler defaults to UTC unless configured; in Kubernetes, usetimeZone: Asia/Kolkatarather than a timezone token in the expression. - The job works in a terminal but not under cron: Cron has a different environment and often a smaller
PATH. Use absolute executable and file paths, confirm the cron user has permission to run Node and write files, and inspect the redirected log. - No screenshot appears: Check that the browser dependencies are installed for the job’s user, the output directory exists and is writable, and the script reports navigation or screenshot errors. Ensure browser cleanup runs even after a failure.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: A navigation milestone such as
domcontentloadedmay occur before the page’s main content is ready. Wait for a site-specific selector or readiness condition before capturing. - Repeated jobs create unexpected results: Kubernetes job creation is approximate and can result in missed or duplicate jobs. Make repeated captures safe, or use unique filenames and detect duplicates.
- Images differ between runs: Keep the browser and execution environment consistent, and account for changing ads, animations, clocks, or personalized content. Stabilize or mask regions when the comparison requires it.
