GitHub Actions is one option; its scheduled workflows use cron and run from your repository’s default branch. A dark preference is only a browser signal: the target site must support it for the page to appear dark.
Build a dark-mode screenshot script
Playwright can emulate the browser’s prefers-color-scheme setting. Set colorScheme: 'dark' when creating a browser context, then navigate to the page and save a screenshot. The following illustrative JavaScript script captures a full page at a fixed viewport:

})();Install Playwright and its browser in the environment that will run the capture, and create the screenshots directory before running this example. The script uses a placeholder URL; replace it with a site you are permitted to access. This is an illustrative combination of documented Playwright calls, not a tested script. For a site whose own theme toggle overrides the browser preference, the automation may need to click that control instead.
Choose viewport or full page
fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page; omit it to capture the current viewport only. Playwright’s screenshot API also supports output type, scaling, masking, animation handling, and a stylesheet option for controlling volatile elements. Choose these based on whether the output is for viewing, comparison, or visual testing. See the Playwright Page API.

Set dark preference another way
Instead of setting the context option, apply the preference to a page before capture:

Schedule the capture with GitHub Actions
Add a workflow file to your repository, for example .github/workflows/dark-screenshots.yml. A schedule fragment for a daily run at 06:17 UTC is:

The workflow also needs a job that checks out the project, sets up the required runtime and browser dependencies, installs Playwright, and runs the capture script. Keep credentials in the platform’s secrets store rather than in a committed workflow file.

GitHub’s schedule reference says scheduled workflows use POSIX cron syntax, default to UTC, and can optionally specify an IANA timezone. The shortest supported interval is once every five minutes. Schedules run using the latest commit on the default branch, and the workflow file must be present on that branch. GitHub warns that busy periods—especially at the start of an hour—can delay or drop scheduled runs, so a minute such as 17 past the hour is preferable when practical. Public-repository scheduled workflows are automatically disabled after 60 days without repository activity. See GitHub’s workflow schedule documentation.
Choose where and how the job runs
- Schedule owner: GitHub Actions connects the schedule to a repository workflow. A local cron service or another workflow platform may suit a job that should run on infrastructure your team operates; the exact setup depends on that environment.
- Timing: Use GitHub’s schedule when UTC or its optional timezone behavior and possible delays are acceptable. Do not treat it as a real-time scheduler.
- Capture scope: Decide whether you need a viewport or full-page image and whether the script should capture one URL or several.
- Page access: The runner must be able to reach the site. Authenticated or protected pages need an appropriate credential and access method; check the site’s terms and any restrictions on automated access.
- Output handling: Decide where screenshots should be retained or delivered, and configure storage, artifact retention, and notifications for your chosen environment.
Make repeated screenshots easier to compare
Keep the browser, browser version, operating system, viewport, device scale, and relevant settings consistent between runs. Microsoft Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; for visual comparisons, it recommends using the same environment as the baseline. Dynamic content such as animations, timestamps, ads, and rotating elements can make captures differ even when the page has not meaningfully changed. Use Playwright’s screenshot controls—such as animation handling, masking, or a stylesheet—to limit unwanted variation. If the page needs time to render, choose a suitable navigation or wait condition rather than relying on an arbitrary delay for every site.

- The screenshot is still light: The site may not honor
prefers-color-scheme, or its own theme setting may take precedence. Check the site manually and interact with its theme control if necessary. - Navigation times out: The page may be slow, unreachable from the runner, or never reach the selected wait condition. Confirm access from the scheduled environment and choose a wait condition appropriate to the page; retain a timeout so a stalled capture fails clearly.
- The file is missing: Check that the output directory exists and that the process has permission to write there. Use a stable, predictable path and ensure the workflow preserves or uploads the generated file as needed.
- Images or page sections are absent: Full-page capture and lazy-loaded content can behave differently by site. Inspect the actual output and adjust page readiness or scrolling behavior where needed.
- Images differ between runs: Compare the browser and host environment, viewport, device scale, and changing page content. Keep the environment fixed and control animations or other volatile elements.
- The scheduled run never starts: Confirm the workflow file is on the default branch, the cron expression is valid, and—if the repository is public—there has been repository activity within the 60-day window GitHub documents. Scheduled events can also be delayed or dropped during high load.
- A page requires sign-in or blocks automation: Verify that the job has authorized access and that automated capture is allowed. Do not treat an unsuccessful load as a valid screenshot.
