Record the capture context and pair the images with accessibility checks and human review. A screenshot shows what a browser rendered at a particular time; it does not prove that a page conforms to WCAG.
Plan the evidence before scheduling captures
Start with a short inventory of what reviewers need to see. A list of URLs alone may miss important states: decide whether each capture should show the default page, an open menu, a form validation message, a modal, or another relevant interaction. Use stable, descriptive names so reviewers can identify the page and state without opening every file.

- Record the target URL and the expected page state.
- Choose whether each screenshot should show the viewport, a particular element, or the full page.
- Set a consistent browser, viewport, and operating environment for comparable runs.
- Decide how the team will retain images and associate them with a run, date, browser details, and related accessibility results.
These context-recording practices are practical recommendations, not a formal evidence standard. There is no universally suitable capture cadence or retention period: agree on those with the people who will review and maintain the evidence.

Choose the right screenshot scope

Capture screenshots with Playwright
Install Playwright Test in a Node.js project and create a test that visits each target, waits for meaningful content, and writes screenshots to a predictable location. The example below captures a viewport and a full-page image. Replace the example URL and selectors with the pages and states in your review plan.

testis harmless; you may remove it. The test waits for the main content rather than relying only on a fixed delay. For an interaction state, perform the interaction and assert the expected state before saving the image—for example, click a menu button and wait for the menu to become visible.Rank #2

Playwright’s screenshot options also allow capturing a locator rather than a whole page. Consult its screenshot guide for current API details. Keep test names and filenames descriptive enough to distinguish page, state, browser, viewport, and run where relevant.

Schedule the capture job
Run the same test command from your existing CI platform or job scheduler on an agreed recurring interval. The precise configuration depends on the platform; the Playwright documentation describes the browser capture and test mechanisms, not one universal scheduler setup.
- Choose a cadence that gives reviewers useful evidence without generating unreviewed volume.
- Consider an additional run after a release or substantial content change.
- Preserve the CI run identifier or timestamp alongside screenshots so a reviewer can find the corresponding logs and accessibility results.
- Keep browser versions and operating environments consistent where possible.
- Set an explicit retention policy for images and logs based on your review process.
For dependable runs, install the same browser dependencies in the scheduled environment as in local development, fail the job when navigation or an expected state fails, and publish screenshots as CI artifacts. Avoid treating a missing image as a clean result: a timeout, failed page load, or selector mismatch should be visible as a failed capture.

Make visual comparisons reproducible
Screenshot differences can come from the site or from the environment. Playwright notes that host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Keep those conditions stable when comparing runs, and interpret differences in that context.
Playwright’s screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing, which helps with transient visual changes. That stabilization is useful for visual regression testing; it is not an accessibility conformance test. A changed screenshot can flag something to inspect, but an unchanged one does not establish that accessibility is adequate.

Pair screenshots with accessibility review
Use screenshots as visual records of a rendered state, not as a substitute for accessibility evaluation. Playwright’s accessibility testing documentation states: “Note that automated testing cannot detect all types of WCAG violations.” Combine automated checks where useful with manual assessment, and consider inclusive user testing for important flows. The methods reveal different kinds of issues and require different levels of expertise; no single screenshot or automated result covers them all.
Choose the WCAG version and jurisdiction relevant to the review. WCAG 2.1 is a W3C Recommendation that extends WCAG 2.0; the applicable target depends on your obligations and project requirements. The W3C ACT implementations listing can help identify which rule sets tools report supporting, but W3C says the submitted implementation data is not verified by W3C.
