How to Schedule Website Screenshots Around Daylight Saving Time Changes

A DST-safe screenshot schedule stores a named time zone and local recurrence, then defines what to do when a local time is skipped or repeated.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep a screenshot running at the same local time after daylight saving time (DST) changes, schedule it as a recurrence in a named time zone—not as a fixed UTC offset or a 24-hour interval. Store the intended local time and IANA zone, such as America/New_York, and decide what the scheduler should do when that time is skipped in spring or occurs twice in fall.

Choose what the schedule should mean

First decide whether the capture should follow local wall-clock time or run after a fixed amount of elapsed time. They are different schedules:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Local wall-clock recurrence: capture at 09:00 every day in a particular region. The UTC time of the capture changes when that region changes its offset.
  • Fixed elapsed interval: capture every 24 hours from the previous run. The local time may shift by an hour when DST changes.

For business-hour checks, daily reports, or other jobs intended to happen at the same local time, use a wall-clock recurrence. For jobs whose purpose is to run at exact elapsed intervals, use interval scheduling instead.

Configure a DST-aware local schedule

  1. Choose the intended time zone. Record the schedule’s regional IANA identifier, for example America/New_York, rather than an offset such as UTC−05:00. An offset describes a difference from UTC, but does not encode a region’s changing rules. As MDN explains, determining an offset requires both the time zone and the instant: MDN: Temporal.ZonedDateTime.
  2. Store local calendar fields and the recurrence. Keep the desired local hour and minute, recurrence rule, and named zone as separate schedule data. Compute each occurrence from those local fields and the zone’s rules; do not generate future runs by repeatedly adding a fixed UTC offset.
  3. Set policies for transition times. Choose what to do if the configured local time does not exist during the spring-forward gap, and what to do if it occurs twice during the fall-back overlap. Common choices include skipping or moving a nonexistent run, and running once at the first or second occurrence of a repeated time. Record the choice rather than letting an implementation decide silently.
  4. Use an implementation with explicit zone support. Do not assume the server’s or browser’s local time zone is the schedule’s zone. Verify the scheduler’s documentation for IANA zone handling, transition behavior, retries, and duplicate runs.
  5. Test both transitions in the actual scheduler. In staging, test one time inside a spring gap and one inside a fall overlap for the target zone. Check the intended local display, scheduled UTC instant, and number of captures.

Understand spring gaps and fall overlaps

When clocks move forward, some local times do not occur. When clocks move back, some local times occur twice. In New York, for example, the clock moved from 01:59 to 03:00 on March 10, 2024; on November 3, 2024, the 01:00 hour repeated. These dates illustrate the cases to test; they are not a schedule rule for other years or regions. See MDN’s Temporal.ZonedDateTime documentation.

Temporal’s documented “compatible” disambiguation behavior moves a skipped time later by the gap and selects the earlier occurrence of a repeated time. That behavior may be convenient, but it is not automatically the right business policy. Temporal also distinguishes calendar arithmetic from elapsed-time arithmetic: adding one calendar day can preserve local clock time across a DST transition, while adding one hour advances by an hour of elapsed time. See MDN: Temporal.ZonedDateTime.prototype.add().

Implement recurring dates in JavaScript

Where supported by the runtime, Temporal.ZonedDateTime makes the time zone part of the date-time value. This example computes a daily occurrence by adding a calendar day, preserving local clock time when possible:

const zone = "America/New_York";
const firstRun = Temporal.ZonedDateTime.from(
  "2026-03-07T09:00[America/New_York]"
);

for (let day = 0; day < 5; day++) {
  const run = firstRun.add({ days: day });
  console.log(run.toString(), run.epochMilliseconds);
}

Use the resulting instant (for example, epochMilliseconds) to enqueue the run, while retaining the zone and local recurrence as the schedule definition. The example relies on Temporal being available in the runtime; check compatibility before using it, especially in browser code. MDN’s Temporal.ZonedDateTime reference documents support considerations.

Do not substitute a host-local Date calculation when the intended zone is not guaranteed to match the host. JavaScript Date local getters and setters, as well as getTimezoneOffset(), use the host environment’s zone. Legacy local date construction also has implicit compatible behavior: it selects the earlier occurrence for a repeated time and moves forward through a gap for a nonexistent time. Those defaults can produce a valid instant that does not match the scheduler policy you intended. See MDN: Date.

Do not rely on a datetime-local field for the zone

An HTML datetime-local input holds local date and time fields; it does not include a time-zone identifier. A user can enter a time that does not exist in the selected region on a spring-forward date. If a form uses this input, collect the intended IANA zone separately and validate the submitted local date-time against that zone’s rules before scheduling it. See MDN: datetime-local input.

Test, monitor, and troubleshoot scheduled captures

Validate the schedule before relying on it

  • Inspect occurrences around both the next spring transition and the next fall transition in the target zone.
  • For each occurrence, verify the intended local time, the corresponding UTC instant, and whether exactly one capture is queued or completed.
  • Repeat relevant checks after scheduler, runtime, or time-zone-data updates. Governments can change regional time-zone rules.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Capture shifts by an hour after DST The schedule was stored as a fixed UTC offset or generated by adding 24 elapsed hours. Use the named IANA zone and recalculate each occurrence from the intended local recurrence.
No capture appears at a configured spring-transition time The chosen local time fell inside the skipped hour. Apply the documented gap policy: skip, move forward, or another explicitly selected resolution.
Two captures occur at the same displayed fall-back time The local time occurred twice and the scheduler queued both matching instants. Set an overlap policy, such as run only at the first or second occurrence.
Timing differs between a laptop and a server Code used the host’s local zone, and the environments use different zones. Use explicit-zone calculations and inspect the scheduler’s configured zone rather than host-local date methods.
A form accepts an impossible local time datetime-local does not validate against a regional time zone. Collect the zone separately and validate the date-time against that zone’s transition rules.
Temporal code fails in a browser or runtime Temporal is not supported in that environment. Check compatibility for the target runtime and choose an explicit-zone scheduler or compatible implementation.

Provider behavior is product-specific: documentation must establish whether a scheduler supports IANA zones, how it resolves gaps and overlaps, and whether it retries or suppresses duplicate runs. Do not infer those guarantees from a cron-like interface alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Temporal work in every browser?

No. Check compatibility for the specific browsers or runtimes where your scheduling code will run before depending on Temporal.

Does a screenshot API automatically preserve my local schedule through DST?

Not necessarily. Screenshot capture and schedule calculation are separate; confirm that your scheduler supports named time zones and defines gap and overlap behavior.
