Use a scheduled CI workflow to run a Playwright script: prepare an authenticated browser state, verify the protected page has loaded, save the screenshot, and publish it as an artifact or to storage you control. The scheduler starts the job; Playwright handles authentication, navigation, and capture.
Choose where the scheduled browser run will execute
A CI scheduler is a practical choice for recurring captures: it launches a job on a schedule, while Playwright runs in that job. Playwright’s CI documentation describes installing dependencies and browsers, running tests, and uploading run output as an artifact. The documentation is rolling; check the current schedule syntax, timezone behavior, branch requirements, and artifact retention for your chosen CI provider before relying on them.

- Hosted CI runner: convenient when you want the provider to start and maintain the execution environment. Configure secrets and artifact permissions in that provider.
- Self-hosted runner: can suit an existing controlled environment, but you take responsibility for its upkeep and access controls.
- Always-on machine: may work for a small, fixed setup, but requires you to manage the scheduler, browser dependencies, credentials, and storage yourself.
Compare maintenance effort, secret handling, schedule and timezone behavior, run limits, and artifact retention. Playwright documents CI and self-hosted CI approaches, but the specifics and costs depend on the provider and are not established by Playwright’s guidance.

Prepare authentication without exposing credentials
For a stable, read-only test account, Playwright’s authentication guide shows saving browser storage state during a setup step and reusing it in later tests. The state can include cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication. It is sensitive: anyone who obtains it may be able to impersonate the account.

- Use a dedicated test account with only the access the screenshot job needs.
- Store its password or token in your CI provider’s secret facility; do not hard-code it or print it in logs.
- Save Playwright state under a git-ignored directory, such as
playwright/.auth. Never commit the state file or upload it as a public artifact. - Authenticate in a setup step, then confirm the expected authenticated URL or a visible page element before capturing. A completed login click alone does not prove that login succeeded.
- Plan for session expiry: if the stored state no longer authenticates, refresh it through the setup flow and check the job’s access and logs without exposing credentials.
If the application offers a supported authentication API, Playwright can send an authentication request and save the resulting state; this can avoid a fragile UI login. Session storage is not persisted directly by Playwright’s storage-state API, so applications that depend on it need a separate save-and-restore approach. If parallel workers would mutate shared server-side state, Playwright recommends separate accounts per worker rather than sharing one account.
Build a repeatable capture script
Install Playwright in the project and install its browser binaries in the job environment. The following Node.js example assumes a saved state file at playwright/.auth/state.json, a protected page at https://app.example.com/reports, and a visible heading named “Reports.” Replace those example values with your app’s URL and a reliable ready condition. Create the output directory before writing the image.

Create it with a separate setup step or an authentication API request, as described in Playwright’s authentication guide. Adjust the heading locator to match a meaningful element in the app, and consider checking the final URL as well if redirects are part of the login flow.
Viewport or full-page capture
Playwright’s Page API saves a screenshot with page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/page.png' }). By default, it captures the visible viewport. To capture the full scrollable page, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/page.png', fullPage: true });. A full-page image may be much taller than a viewport and is not a record of one screen-sized view.

Control repeatability
The screenshot API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output, plus options for scale, masking, and animation control. Choose the format and scale deliberately: CSS-pixel scale can help keep dimensions consistent across high-density displays. If rotating content, timestamps, or animations make captures difficult to compare, mask or control those elements as appropriate. For visual regression rather than an archive of scheduled images, Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() can compare a capture with a baseline; review and update baselines deliberately rather than treating every difference as a new reference.
Schedule the job and retain its output
Playwright’s CI guide gives a workflow sequence: install project dependencies, install Playwright browsers and operating-system dependencies, then run the test command. For a standalone script, run the script instead. The guide recommends one worker in CI for stability and reproducibility; use parallel workers or sharding only when the runner and test design support it.

- Configure the CI provider’s scheduler to start the capture job. Check its current timezone, branch, and schedule rules in the provider documentation; these are provider-specific.
- Install the project dependencies and the browser binaries required by the installed Playwright version.
- Make the authentication state available securely, or run the authentication setup before the capture.
- Run the capture script or Playwright Test command and fail the job if authentication or the ready-condition check fails.
- Upload the screenshot directory as a restricted CI artifact, or copy it to a controlled storage location if it must outlive the provider’s artifact window.
Do not assume a file in the job workspace is permanent. Artifact access and retention are set by the CI provider, so choose an explicit retention period and access policy. For durable history, send files to storage whose retention and permissions you manage.

- The app redirects to the login page: the saved state may have expired, may belong to a different environment, or may not include the required authentication data. Re-run the setup or supported API login, then verify the final URL and authenticated UI before capture.
- The script times out waiting for the page: check whether the app is slow, the locator is wrong, or the session is unauthenticated. Wait for a stable app-specific element rather than assuming navigation alone means the page is ready.
- The screenshot directory or file is missing: create the destination directory in the job before calling the screenshot API, and verify that the artifact upload step uses the same path.
- The browser will not launch in CI: ensure the job installed Playwright’s browser binaries and required operating-system dependencies for the installed version.
- Captures differ between runs: dynamic content, animation, viewport size, and device scale can affect the image. Set a consistent viewport and scale, and use masking or animation controls where suitable.
- Credentials appear in output or artifacts: remove the exposure, restrict artifact access, and rotate the affected credentials or session. Treat authentication state as a credential, not as an ordinary screenshot file.
