To take screenshots on a regular cadence, configure the request once and have a separate scheduler call it at the interval you choose. Then decide where to save the images and how long to keep them.
What you need for recurring captures
- A ScreenshotMachine customer key and the URL of the page to capture.
- A scheduler or orchestration system that can make an HTTP request at your chosen interval. Scheduling is a separate workflow component, not a feature established by ScreenshotMachine’s reviewed API reference.
- A destination and retention policy if you need an image history. The capture request itself does not establish storage, comparisons, notifications, or retry behavior.
ScreenshotMachine’s API endpoint is https://api.screenshotmachine.com/. Its request accepts a customer key and target page URL, along with capture options. See the ScreenshotMachine API documentation for the vendor’s request reference and examples.

Configure the capture request
Choose the same options for every run if you want images that are easy to compare. The API documentation describes dimensions, output format, cache age, capture delay, zoom, and a CSS-selector click before capture.

- Dimensions: Use the documented width-by-height format. The height can be
fullfor a full-length page. - Format: The documentation lists JPG, PNG, and GIF.
- Cache age:
cacheLimitcontrols the age of a cached image that may be returned; setcacheLimit=0to request a fresh screenshot. - Capture delay: The documented delay range is 0–10,000 milliseconds. Allow enough time for the content you need to appear, while keeping the delay consistent between runs.
- Zoom: Set a consistent value when using this option so changes in scale do not affect comparisons.
- Click before capture: The
clickoption can trigger an element selected with a CSS selector, such as a control needed to reveal page content.
Keep the URL, dimensions, format, cache setting, delay, zoom, and any required click in the stored scheduler configuration. The exact parameter names and supported values should be taken from ScreenshotMachine’s API reference rather than inferred from another screenshot service.

Schedule the API request
- Choose the page and capture scope. Decide whether each run should capture the visible viewport or the full page.
- Set and verify the capture parameters. Make one request using the desired options and confirm the returned image contains the expected content.
- Store the credentials securely. Put the customer key in the environment or secret store used by the scheduler, not in public client-side code. ScreenshotMachine advises using its secret-phrase hash mechanism to protect requests made from public webpages.
- Configure an external scheduler. Set it to invoke the API request at the required interval. The scheduler could be a hosted job runner or a system you operate; select one based on when it must run and what retry controls it provides.
- Save and retain each result if you need history. Choose a durable destination and a naming scheme that preserves the capture time, for example a timestamp in the filename. Set retention according to your needs.
- Decide how failures are handled. If missing a capture matters, configure retry and notification behavior in the scheduler or surrounding workflow. These are workflow choices, not ScreenshotMachine scheduling features verified by the reviewed documentation.
Protect credentials and plan for a useful history
A recurring job should not expose its customer key in a browser page, public repository, or client-side script. Keep it in the scheduler’s protected configuration and restrict access to the job’s logs and stored settings. For public webpage requests, follow ScreenshotMachine’s documented secret-phrase hash mechanism.
Choose how images will be organized before the schedule starts. A predictable path or filename containing the target page identifier and capture time makes it easier to find a particular run. If you want visual comparisons or alerts, add those as separate steps in your workflow; the reviewed API reference does not establish them as built-in ScreenshotMachine functions.

Common problems and fixes
- The request is rejected: Confirm the customer key and target URL are present and correctly encoded. Compare the request parameter names with ScreenshotMachine’s API reference.
- The image appears unchanged: Check whether the request is returning a cached image. Use
cacheLimit=0when each scheduled run must request a fresh screenshot. - The page is incomplete: Increase the capture delay within the documented 0–10,000 ms range, or confirm that the needed content is visible without an interaction. Keep the setting stable across runs.
- A control-dependent section is missing: Use the documented
clickoption with the CSS selector for the control that reveals it, then verify the result with a test capture. - Captures are not appearing on schedule: Check the scheduler’s timezone, run history, and request logs. The recurring trigger is managed outside the documented ScreenshotMachine capture request.
- Some dates are missing from the archive: Inspect scheduler failure logs and configure retry behavior if the chosen scheduler supports it. Confirm that the image destination is writable and that filenames do not overwrite earlier runs.
