To schedule recurring website captures, either configure a screenshot provider’s built-in schedule or use a scheduler you control—such as cron, a CI workflow, or a serverless timer—to call a screenshot API on a cadence. A managed schedule can keep run history and notifications with the provider; an external schedule gives you more control but leaves retries, storage, and duplicate-run prevention to you.
Before enabling either approach, test the capture manually, fix the viewport and rendering waits, confirm the timezone and billing unit, and decide how failures and old captures will be handled. These details determine whether the recurring images are useful and predictable.

Choose who owns the schedule
Use a provider-managed schedule
A managed schedule is configured in the screenshot service, typically with the target URL, cadence, capture options, and any destinations or change rules it supports. Allscreenshots documents schedule setup in its dashboard and through POST /v1/schedules, along with capture history, email and webhook delivery, change-only notifications, failure alerts, automatic pausing, and retention settings. These are provider-specific capabilities, not standard fields or guarantees across screenshot APIs. See Allscreenshots scheduling documentation.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis approach is a good fit when you want the vendor to own the recurring trigger and keep related history or notifications. Check how that service handles retries, failed captures, retention, and quota usage before relying on it.

Use an external scheduler
With an external scheduler, your cron job, CI system, serverless timer, or automation platform triggers the screenshot API. Snapshot Site documents this pattern and calls out deterministic settings, manual validation, storage, retries, alerts, and duplicate-run prevention as workflow concerns. See Snapshot Site’s scheduling guide.
This pattern suits workflows that need to fit an existing deployment or monitoring system. You own the cadence and integrations, but also the job state, output storage, retry policy, alerting, and protection against overlapping or repeated triggers.
Make each capture reproducible
A recurring request needs more than a URL. Keep the capture settings stable so that a change in viewport or wait behavior does not look like a change in the site itself. Define these before you schedule:

- Viewport and scope: The viewport width, and whether the capture should be full-page or limited to a particular element if the API supports it.
- Rendering readiness: A selector, delay, or network-idle condition supported by the selected provider. Pages with client-side rendering may need time for scripts and data to finish.
- Page state: Authentication, cookies, or other state required to reach the intended content. Confirm that the API supports the required method and that credentials are handled securely.
- Output and destination: Image or PDF format as needed, plus where results and run metadata will be stored.

Allscreenshots’ schedule example uses fields including fullPage, waitFor, and waitUntil. Treat those as that API’s field names, not portable parameters. Read the selected provider’s endpoint documentation for its current request schema.
Set the cadence and timezone deliberately
Schedule syntax varies. Allscreenshots documents hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly aliases, as well as a six-field cron expression with a timezone. Another provider documents schedules attached to named sets, with hourly, six-hour, daily, weekly, or no recurring schedule. Do not copy a schedule expression from one provider into another without checking its accepted fields and timezone semantics.
- Choose the interval: Match capture frequency to how quickly the page can meaningfully change. Frequent captures increase render volume and can create more noisy comparisons.
- Choose the timezone: Confirm whether the provider expects a named timezone, a UTC time, or another representation. Do not assume a dashboard’s displayed local time is the execution timezone.
- Check schedule boundaries: Establish what happens when a run is still in progress at the next scheduled time, or when a deployment hook and timer trigger together.
For external jobs, create an idempotency key from the target, capture configuration, and intended schedule window. This lets the workflow recognize duplicate triggers rather than silently storing or paying for the same run twice.

- Choose managed or external scheduling based on where you want cadence, history, notifications, and integrations to live.
- Define the URL set and capture settings together. Pin the viewport, capture scope, readiness condition, format, and required page state.
- Set the cadence and timezone using the selected provider’s documented syntax and interpretation.
- Run one manual capture first. Inspect the result for incomplete rendering, missing authenticated content, incorrect page length, or an unintended viewport. Snapshot Site recommends an initial manual validation.
- Choose what counts as a meaningful change. Pixel comparisons can react to moving ads, live counters, or other dynamic regions. Allscreenshots documents sensitivity controls and element hiding as mitigations; whether those are available elsewhere depends on the provider.
- Plan failures and duplicate triggers. For an external scheduler, configure retries and alerts and use an idempotency strategy. For a managed scheduler, confirm whether failure alerts or automatic pausing are available and how they work.
- Estimate usage and set retention. Check the provider’s billable unit and quota, then decide how long outputs should be kept and whether they can be exported.
- Test pause and delete behavior. Confirm whether pausing preserves history and whether deletion removes associated captures.
Estimate recurring render volume
Billing units are provider-specific. Some schedules count against a monthly screenshot quota; other services may count each page and viewport width as a separate render. Use the provider’s documented unit rather than treating one scheduled run as universally equivalent to one billed screenshot.

Screenshot-API.net gives a vendor-published example in which each page at each width costs one render: a set of 10 pages at 2 widths scheduled hourly uses 14,400 renders in a month. This is an illustrative calculation from that provider’s documentation, not a general rule for screenshot APIs. See Screenshot-API.net snapshot sets.
For a provider that bills per page and width, estimate usage as:
runs per month × pages per run × widths per page
Then account for any additional billable work, such as retries, according to the provider’s rules. For other services, check whether failed captures, cache hits, or repeated triggers count toward usage rather than assuming they are free or billed.
Keep history, notifications, and deletion under control
Run history helps distinguish a visual change from a failed or incomplete capture. Decide where the authoritative record lives: in the screenshot service, your own storage, or both. For external schedules, keep enough metadata to identify the target, configuration, scheduled window, outcome, and stored output.

Change-only delivery can reduce notification noise, but the comparison method and sensitivity are service-specific. Dynamic content such as ad slots and live counters can trigger image differences even when the underlying page has not meaningfully changed. Where available, hide unstable elements or tune sensitivity; otherwise, consider whether a visual-diff alert is suitable for that page.
Retention and deletion are also provider-specific. The Allscreenshots schedule example includes a retentionDays field. ScreenshotAPI.net says deleting a job permanently deletes its related screenshots. Confirm export and retention behavior before treating a service as an archive, and pause rather than delete a job when preserving its history matters for that provider.

Troubleshoot common schedule failures
The capture runs at the wrong time
Check the scheduler’s timezone interpretation and the provider’s schedule format. A cron expression, a preset cadence, and an interval in minutes are not interchangeable; confirm the accepted syntax and timezone at the configured endpoint.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
First run the same capture manually and inspect whether the page requires authentication or additional render time. Adjust the provider-supported wait condition, selector, or delay, then validate again before restoring the recurring trigger.
Images differ on every run
Look for live counters, rotating content, ad slots, or other dynamic regions before treating every pixel difference as a real page change. If the service supports it, hide unstable elements or tune comparison sensitivity; otherwise, reconsider whether change-only alerts suit that page.
Runs overlap or appear twice
Check whether a prior run can still be active when the next schedule window starts, and whether another trigger—such as a deployment hook—can invoke the same job. For external schedulers, use a job key based on target, configuration, and schedule window, and make storage writes idempotent.
Usage is higher than expected
Recalculate from the provider’s billable unit, including pages, viewport widths, retries, and any duplicate runs that count. Screenshot-API.net’s page-per-width example is specific to its documented model; it should not be applied to other providers.
Old captures disappear after cleanup
Check the retention setting and the provider’s deletion semantics. For ScreenshotAPI.net, deleting a job permanently deletes associated screenshots, according to its documentation. Export needed files or pause a job if its history must remain available.
Quick Recap
What to verify before enabling production schedules
- Current endpoint version, request fields, and schedule syntax.
- Timezone behavior and what happens with missed or overlapping runs.
- Quota, per-run billing, render dimensions, and rate limits.
- Retry behavior and webhook delivery or security requirements, if used.
- History retention, export options, and whether deletion is reversible.
- Whether the selected capture settings support the page’s rendering and authentication needs.
