The timer starts a local service; it does not create the YouTube event, send video by itself, or necessarily make the event public. You still need to connect the encoder and follow YouTube’s Live Control Room workflow.
How the three parts work together
Think of the setup as three separate layers, each with a different job:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- YouTube event: You schedule the live event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. This creates the event and its watch page.
- Playlist and encoder: A local process reads the intended media in order and sends the resulting feed to YouTube using that event’s server URL and stream key.
- systemd timer and service: The timer activates a service at the time you configure. The service runs the playlist and encoder command on your Linux host.
Scheduling a YouTube event does not start the local encoder. Likewise, starting an encoder does not itself create or schedule a YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting the encoder, checking its preview, and clicking Go live in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
Check YouTube’s limits before planning parallel streams
YouTube Help currently documents a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits applying at the same time. These are YouTube’s documented product limits, not systemd limits; recheck YouTube’s live-streaming requirements when you configure your channel because platform limits can change.

| Limit | YouTube Help figure | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Active streams per channel | 10 simultaneously | Do not plan to run more than 10 active feeds from one channel. |
| Active streams per stream key | 3 simultaneously | Use the right key for each feed and keep the number of concurrent feeds using one key within this cap. |
For the simplest setup to reason about and troubleshoot, use a separate event, key reference, playlist, service, and timer for each intended stream. This per-stream arrangement is an implementation recommendation based on systemd’s timer-to-unit model and YouTube’s concurrency limits, not a tested configuration.
Prepare a YouTube event and protect its stream key
- Create one scheduled event for each destination. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule the event. Record which channel and event the local process is meant to serve.
- Get the event’s server URL and stream key. Configure these in the encoder in the format its documentation requires. Do not put a stream key in a public script, shared playlist, or logs. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live-stream settings guide.
- Decide how the event is actually started. Plan for the documented encoder workflow: start the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, check the incoming feed, then click Go live in Live Control Room. Do not assume that the event’s scheduled time makes a systemd-started feed public automatically.
Build and validate each ordered playlist
One option for feeding a sequence of local files to FFmpeg is its concat demuxer. Create a text file for each playlist with one file directive per media file, in playback order. For example:

file '/srv/youtube/stream-a/part-02.mp4'
file '/srv/youtube/stream-a/part-03.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the host account that will run the service. If paths contain quotes or other special characters, follow FFmpeg’s concat file syntax rather than assuming the example’s quoting is sufficient. FFmpeg’s formats documentation describes the concat demuxer and optional duration entries.

- Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts. If you add
durationdirectives, validate the resulting transitions and timing rather than relying on a guessed duration. - A concat list defines order; it is not, on its own, a scheduler, a loop policy, or a YouTube event controller. Configure and test the encoder process that consumes it for the playback behavior you need.
Configure one service and timer per stream
Create a dedicated systemd service for each playlist/stream pair, then a timer that activates that service. The service owns the local work: selecting the correct playlist, setting a stable working directory, loading the correct protected key configuration, and running the encoder. The timer owns when systemd activates that service.

For every stream, keep a small configuration record containing:
- The YouTube channel and scheduled event this process serves.
- A protected reference to the correct server URL and stream key. Avoid duplicating secrets in command-line arguments or output that may be logged.
- The absolute playlist path and working directory.
- The encoder executable and arguments chosen for the media and destination.
- Where to find logs, and what recovery behavior is intended if the process fails.
- The intended calendar schedule and time zone.
Use distinct unit names or per-stream instances so that a timer for one playlist cannot silently start the wrong configuration. Confirm timer syntax, time-zone interpretation, enablement at boot, missed-event behavior after downtime, overlap behavior, and restart policy against the installed systemd.timer(5) and systemd.service(5) manuals on your distribution. systemd’s project overview describes timer units as units that activate other units based on timers, but exact options and behavior should be checked for the version you run: systemd manual overview.

Do not copy an unverified unit file and assume it fits your distribution. A service that exits as soon as the encoder exits, one that stays active for the whole stream, and one configured to restart after failure have different operational consequences. Choose deliberately, then test what your installed systemd version does when the service is already running, exits unexpectedly, or the host was powered off at the scheduled time. The systemd project’s NEWS history notes calendar-time events for timers, but is not a substitute for your installed manual.

Test the full path before relying on unattended starts
- Run the playlist and encoder manually under the same account and configuration the service will use. Confirm the files are readable and the expected feed reaches the intended YouTube event.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check that the audio and video are present and the stream status looks healthy. YouTube recommends starting encoders in advance and checking the preview; see its live-streaming tips.
- Test the service independently of its timer. Inspect its journal output and confirm the correct playlist, working directory, and key configuration were used.
- Test the timer using a near-future schedule, verify that it activates the intended service, and then restore the planned calendar expression.
- Repeat for each event and stream. Also verify how your host handles process exit, an already-running service, and a missed schedule after shutdown.
- Before production, confirm that the number of simultaneous active feeds remains within YouTube’s channel and stream-key limits.
Capacity, reliability, and archive considerations
If several encoders run on one host, account for their combined CPU or GPU use and total outbound bandwidth. The source guidance does not establish a universal processor or bandwidth requirement; the actual load depends on your files, output settings, encoder, and number of simultaneous feeds. Test the real combination under load instead of treating one stream’s performance as proof that several will work.

A systemd timer can start a local service, but it cannot protect a stream from a host outage, network failure, or every encoder or YouTube-side interruption. Decide how failures should be surfaced and whether automatic restarts are appropriate, then monitor service journals as well as YouTube’s stream status. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archival behavior for a stream that runs indefinitely or exceeds that duration. See YouTube’s encoder workflow and archive note.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The event is scheduled, but no feed appears | The local timer or service has not started, or the encoder is not connected. | Check the timer’s next schedule and service journal, then run the encoder manually with that event’s configuration. |
| The encoder is running but YouTube has no preview | Wrong event, server URL, key, or connection. | Compare the service’s protected configuration with the intended event; inspect the encoder output without exposing the key in logs. |
| The preview appears but the event is not live | The YouTube event’s Live Control Room workflow has not been completed. | Check the preview and stream health, then use YouTube’s Go live workflow as applicable to the event. |
| One playlist fails while another works | Playlist path, permissions, working directory, or incompatible concat inputs. | Check paths as the service account, confirm file access, and verify matching streams/codecs/time bases across files. |
| Playback has glitches at transitions | Input compatibility or inaccurate duration information. | Inspect the concat demuxer inputs and any duration entries; test transitions before scheduling the production event. |
| A stream starts twice or the wrong stream starts | Overlapping schedules, duplicate timers, or reused per-stream configuration. | Give each stream its own timer and service configuration, and verify overlap behavior using the installed systemd manual. |
| The service fails after a host reboot or missed schedule | Timer enablement, calendar/time-zone interpretation, or catch-up policy. | Check the timer’s enabled state and installed systemd.timer(5) guidance for the distribution’s missed-event semantics. |
| YouTube refuses another active feed | Channel or stream-key concurrency cap. | Count concurrent feeds per channel and key against YouTube Help’s current limits before retrying. |
