Run NAS backups during a period when Plex is rarely used, keep them clear of other heavy storage work where possible, and check CPU, disk, and network activity during a representative run. There is no universally safe backup hour: the right schedule depends on when your household streams, whether playback is local or remote, what the NAS is doing, and how your backup destination works.
How to find a backup window that works
- Map Plex use. Note when people stream, including remote viewers, and when other NAS jobs run. Plex’s scheduled-task time uses the server’s local time. Its maintenance window defaults to 3 a.m.–6 a.m.; Plex says most people will want maintenance while asleep or away, and that a three-to-four-hour window is typically sufficient. That guidance concerns Plex maintenance, not how long your NAS backup will take. See Plex Scheduled Tasks and Scheduled Server Maintenance.
- Choose a separate low-use period for backups. Avoid overlapping them with Plex maintenance or storage-heavy operations such as pool repairs when practical. Synology recommends scheduling Hyper Backup tasks during off-peak hours. If your NAS backup client queues tasks, account for that behavior: Synology says its client runs one task at a time, so tasks scheduled to start together run sequentially rather than transferring simultaneously. See Synology’s Hyper Backup troubleshooting guidance and Folders and Packages Backup.
- Observe a representative run. While the backup is running, watch Plex playback and NAS CPU, disk, and network activity. Compare any stutter with the workload: transcoding can drive CPU use; remote playback can make network capacity more consequential; disk-heavy backup activity may compete with media access.
- Adjust and check completion. If playback suffers, move the backup start time, separate overlapping jobs, or review the resource that appears constrained. Observe another run and make sure the job finishes before its next scheduled run. Vendor guidance does not establish a guaranteed safe speed or a fixed percentage improvement from changing backup times.
What can compete with Plex during a backup?
CPU: especially when Plex transcodes
Plex identifies processor power, network speed, and storage space as general constraints, and says transcoding is the main source of its ongoing CPU use. If a stream is being transcoded while a backup runs, check CPU activity rather than assuming the backup schedule alone is the cause. NAS transcoding capability varies by model; see Plex’s bandwidth and transcoding guidance and NAS Devices and Limitations.

Network: particularly relevant to remote streams
Plex says network speed is usually less important on a local network and can matter substantially for remote streams. If remote playback is affected, check network activity and capacity alongside CPU and disk use. A bandwidth limit may help or hinder a particular setup; Synology’s recommendation to avoid Hyper Backup bandwidth limits is specifically for optimizing backup and restore performance, not a guarantee of smoother Plex playback. Assess any available traffic controls against both backup completion and streaming responsiveness.

Backups and storage maintenance can compete with media access. Synology’s Hyper Backup troubleshooting guidance recommends checking storage pool and volume status, drive utilization, CPU utilization, and competing services when a task is slow. It also notes that chunking, deduplication, indexing, and building the backup structure can make Hyper Backup slower than a simple file copy.

Keep Plex maintenance separate from NAS backup
Plex scheduled tasks are configured at Settings > Server > Scheduled Tasks. The default maintenance window is 3 a.m.–6 a.m. in the Plex server’s local time. If Plex maintenance and a NAS backup overlap with playback problems, separate the jobs and see whether the observed resource use or playback changes.
Plex’s scheduled database backup runs every three days and keeps up to three rotating copies. Plex explicitly says this database copy is not a replacement for backing up Plex Media Server data. Keep a separate backup plan suited to the data and recovery you need.

Scheduling and destination controls vary by NAS
Synology Hyper Backup
Synology recommends off-peak scheduling and checking system resources when Hyper Backup is slow. Its backup client runs one task at a time; simultaneous scheduled tasks queue and run in sequence. Hyper Backup can export backup data to external storage; see Create Backup Tasks. Choose a destination compatible with your NAS and recovery needs rather than assuming a particular drive or schedule will suit every setup.

TrueNAS
TrueNAS SCALE 25.10 documents cloud sync, replication, rsync, and TrueCloud among its backup options. Replication takes a moment-in-time snapshot and copies it to another location. TrueNAS 26 documentation for TrueCloud describes preset schedules and a custom scheduler, but its rate limit is a fixed KiB/s limit throughout the task, not a time-based schedule. These controls apply to different releases and task types, so verify the interface for the installed release and chosen method. See Backing Up TrueNAS and TrueCloud Backup Tasks Screens.

There is no universal “safe” backup hour
The cited vendor guidance recommends off-peak scheduling and resource monitoring, but does not provide a controlled Plex-versus-backup benchmark or quantify how much a schedule change improves playback. Use your own streaming pattern and a representative run to choose a window. A quiet time for one household may be a busy time for another, and NAS model, backup destination, transcoding, and concurrent storage work all affect the result.
