Anthropic offers local recurring tasks, cloud routines, and a separate Managed Agents deployment API; none should be mistaken for a universal cron feature. A small-business workflow should also keep consequential actions reviewable rather than handing an agent unrestricted authority.
First, what “handing a business to agents” should mean
A scheduler starts work; it does not make an agent dependable, give it business judgment, or guarantee that a task finished correctly. A safer design assigns automation narrow, repeatable work—such as preparing a report or drafting a reply—and makes any important external action subject to an explicit check.

The title does not establish a particular business, agent lineup, host, database, integration, approval process, or measured result. The architecture below is a practical recommendation, not a report of an author’s verified implementation. Also, “agents” can mean separate role-specific runs or Claude Code subagents; the scheduler itself is a distinct component.

For a small, repeatable workflow
Start with Claude Code routines if the work belongs in a repository or supported connector workflow and you want it to continue without an open laptop. Anthropic describes routines as configurable automations that can run on a schedule, API call, or event. Its announcement gives examples such as nightly backlog triage and weekly documentation drift checks. Those examples show supported patterns, not a guarantee that an agent can safely operate an entire business unattended.

For a local experiment
Use /loop when the task is temporary and session-bound. Do not rely on it for business-critical recurring work that must run after the session ends.
For an API-built deployment
Choose Managed Agents only when you specifically want the Claude Platform deployment model and can provide its required agent configuration, environment configuration, initial event, cron expression, and timezone. The documentation describes minute-level maximum schedule granularity; that is a scheduling capability, not a promise about completion time.
Build the workflow as a chain of responsibilities
Keep the scheduler, agent task, access policy, record of results, validation, and human escalation as explicit parts of the design. This makes it possible to identify whether a failure came from triggering, execution, permissions, or an incorrect result.

- Trigger: Define a schedule or supported event and its timezone. Decide what should happen if a run is missed or overlaps with another run; the cited product descriptions do not establish your recovery behavior.
- Bounded task: Give the run one clear objective, relevant repository or connector context, and an expected output. Prefer a draft, report, or proposed change over broad instructions to “run the business.”
- Explicit access: Connect only the repositories, data, and tools required for that task. Keep credentials and permissions narrow; do not assume a product feature certifies the security of your whole workflow.
- Durable run record: Retain enough input, output, timestamp, and action detail to inspect what happened. The exact logging or state mechanism is an implementation choice, not specified by the title or the cited product pages.
- Validation and escalation: Check that the expected artifact exists and meets concrete conditions. Route ambiguity, errors, and consequential actions to a person rather than treating a successful run status as proof of a correct business outcome.
Separate agent roles without confusing them with scheduling
If several kinds of work need different instructions or access, define separate bounded tasks—for example, one that summarizes incoming issues and another that drafts a weekly status report. Whether those tasks are separate routines, distinct agents, or subagents depends on the product configuration. Anthropic’s guidance lists subagents among Claude Code’s customization methods, but it does not document the architecture of the business implied by this title.
Do not add a “supervisor agent” merely because a workflow has multiple roles. A deterministic scheduler can invoke defined tasks, while a person or explicit validation step handles decisions that require judgment. Fewer, more legible tasks are easier to inspect than an opaque chain of agents handing work to one another.
Put hard rules in enforcement, not just prompts
A prompt can explain what an agent should do, but it is not a reliable enforcement boundary. In its June 18, 2026 guidance on shaping Claude Code behavior, Anthropic distinguishes instructions and customization mechanisms—including CLAUDE.md files, rules, skills, subagents, hooks, output styles, and system-prompt appends—and recommends hooks and permissions for deterministic controls. Anthropic states: “A real guardrail needs to be deterministic, and the enforcement methods are hooks and permissions.” This is product guidance, not an independent security certification. Use deterministic controls for boundaries such as which tools may run or which actions must be blocked or reviewed. Treat prompt instructions as task guidance, not as the only barrier against an unintended side effect.

A useful dividing line is whether an error is easy to detect and reverse. Low-impact preparation can often be automated more safely than actions that spend money, change customer records, publish externally, or make commitments.
- Usually suitable for automatic preparation: summarize new items, identify likely duplicates, flag stale documentation, or draft a report for inspection.
- Require a deliberate review decision: send customer-facing messages, publish content, alter important records, issue refunds, place orders, or make other consequential changes.
- Pause and escalate: missing context, conflicting instructions, unexpected tool results, failed validation, or any action outside the task’s defined scope.
These are design recommendations, not claims about a particular business’s workflow or Anthropic’s certification of any configuration.

Understand routine availability and limits
Anthropic’s April 14, 2026 announcement said routines were available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users with Claude Code on the web enabled. It listed daily routine-run limits of 5 for Pro, 15 for Max, and 25 for Team and Enterprise, with additional routines possible through extra usage. These are announcement-era terms, not a timeless guarantee; check Anthropic’s current product documentation and account before planning around them. Anthropic Claude Code routines announcement
Questions to settle before relying on a schedule
- What exact event or time triggers the run, and in which timezone?
- What data and tools can the run access, and what is deliberately out of bounds?
- Where can an operator inspect the prompt, output, and side effects for a particular run?
- How will the workflow detect a missed, duplicate, overlapping, or invalid run?
- Which outputs can be accepted automatically, and which require a human decision?
- How will the operator pause the schedule and recover if an integration, permission, or output fails?
The product sources above describe scheduling capabilities, not a universal answer to these operational questions. Resolve them for the actual integration and deployment before making the workflow business-critical.
