You set up the event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder or playout service to send the playlist. Whether it plays once, loops, or stops at a runtime-based end time depends on that tool.
What YouTube can schedule—and what it cannot
YouTube Studio lets you schedule a live event and connect an encoder to it. In the official instructions reviewed, Studio has no documented control for totaling playlist durations and ending the broadcast automatically at that time. Treat scheduling the event and controlling playlist playback as two separate jobs.

A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, and viewers may opt in to reminders. You still need a video source—such as a local encoder or compatible hosted playout service—to send the live feed. YouTube describes the stream key as the password and address that lets an encoder send video to your channel; handle it like a credential. Choose the playback behavior before scheduling
First decide what “by video duration” means for your broadcast. A playlist that plays once and ends after its last item is different from a 24/7 loop, which repeats until you stop it. A scheduled start time alone does not determine either behavior.

- Play once: Arrange the videos in order and configure the encoder or service to stop after the final video. Confirm whether it can calculate the end time from the playlist’s total runtime or whether you must enter a stop time yourself.
- Repeat continuously: Enable looping in the playout tool. A loop is not a duration-based stop; it normally continues until you stop the stream or another limit intervenes.
- Stop at a chosen time: Set a specific end time if the tool supports it. Check what happens if the videos finish early or the playlist runs past that time.
One provider-specific example is Upstream’s guide to scheduling a YouTube stream, which documents setting an end time based on the total duration of a video playlist. That is evidence of a capability in that provider’s workflow, not a native YouTube Studio feature or a guarantee that another service offers the same control. Check the chosen service’s current documentation and settings before relying on it.
Schedule the event and connect the playlist
- Create the scheduled broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the Manage tab. Create a new stream and schedule it for the intended start time, or reuse existing stream settings if appropriate. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating and managing scheduled streams.
- Build the playlist in your encoder or playout service. Add the videos in the intended order. Set the tool to play once, repeat, or stop at a chosen time. If you want the stream to end when the playlist finishes, verify that the tool supports that behavior; do not assume YouTube Studio will infer it.
- Set a runtime-based end time if available. If the provider offers an option to calculate an end time from total playlist duration, confirm the playlist contents and total before applying it. Check how the service treats gaps, transitions, edits to the list, and videos added after scheduling; those details are provider-specific.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the scheduled event into the encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.
- Start the source and check the preview. Start the encoder or hosted playout at the planned time, then inspect the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Complete the go-live action shown for the scheduled broadcast. Confirm that video and audio are present before leaving an unattended stream.
- Monitor the ending behavior. For a one-time playlist, verify that the encoder or service actually stops or ends the feed after the final item. For a loop, confirm that the first item begins again. A scheduled start does not itself verify the end condition.
Local encoder or hosted cloud playout?
A local encoder can play files or feed a playlist to the scheduled YouTube event, but the computer, playback software, power, and internet connection must remain available for as long as the feed runs. A hosted playout service moves playback off your local machine; its playlist controls, monitoring, recovery, key handling, and pricing vary by provider. Neither approach guarantees uninterrupted transmission simply because the playlist is configured to loop.

Compare the specific tool’s ability to order and repeat videos, calculate or accept an end time, recover after a disconnect, and show stream health. Also check how it stores and protects the YouTube stream key, what must remain powered or connected, and whether its billing fits a one-off scheduled session or ongoing 24/7 operation. If you need a replay on your channel, account for YouTube’s archive guidance when choosing a session length. YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours long, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” These are archive cautions—not a promise that every longer broadcast will stop or that every shorter stream will be archived. A continuous 24/7 loop is longer than the period for which YouTube says automatic archiving is available, so do not rely on the live archive as the only copy of your content. Keep your source files and decide separately how viewers will access past material.
Stream content and setup checks
- Rights: Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, including music, artwork, and other material inside the videos. A scheduled event or live format does not grant permission to reuse content. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before broadcasting.
- Reused content: If monetization matters, consider whether the channel’s programming offers sufficient original value and complies with YouTube’s monetization policies. Permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions.
- Source continuity: For local playback, account for computer sleep settings, operating-system restarts, software crashes, power, and network interruptions. For hosted playback, learn what monitoring and reconnect behavior the provider actually offers.
- Event timing: Schedule the event with enough time to connect the source and inspect the preview. Tell viewers whether the broadcast is a one-time run or a repeating loop.
- Equipment: YouTube recommends hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but says expensive equipment is not required to get started. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The stream starts, but the playlist does not end. The encoder may be set to loop, or it may not support automatic stop at the final item. Turn off repeat and configure a stop-on-completion option if available; otherwise, schedule or stop it manually.
- The broadcast ends at the wrong time. Check whether the end time was calculated from the current playlist, whether its items or durations changed, and whether the service includes transitions or gaps in its calculation. Recalculate or update the time in the playout tool.
- Live Control Room shows no incoming video. Confirm that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key belong to the scheduled event. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s incoming preview before proceeding.
- The scheduled event is upcoming, but viewers see no live feed. An upcoming event is not the same as an active source. Start the encoder or hosted playout, verify the preview, and complete the go-live action presented in Live Control Room.
- The stream key fails or may have been exposed. Check that the correct key is copied into the encoder and that it has not been replaced in YouTube Studio. If someone else may have obtained it, reset the key and update the encoder.
- The long stream has no replay. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Preserve source files independently rather than treating the live archive as guaranteed storage.
