To schedule a YouTube playlist rotation on Ubuntu, write a script that uses the YouTube Data API to perform the rotation you want, then run that script from the intended user’s crontab. Cron schedules commands; it does not manage YouTube playlists or decide what “rotation” means.
Choose what “rotation” should do
YouTube has API methods for reading playlist items and for inserting, updating, and deleting them. There is no single playlist-rotation operation: your script must implement the policy. First decide whether you want to change an item’s position, cycle which items are included, or remove an item and add another.

- Reorder an existing item: Use the playlist-item update method to change its position. This is distinct from deleting and adding it again; it keeps the existing item rather than creating a new playlist entry.
- Remove and re-add: Delete the existing playlist item and insert a new one only if that is the intended result. Consider how your policy should handle a video already in the playlist, so a scheduled run does not create unwanted duplicates.
- Cycle membership: Define which item leaves and which enters on each run, including what should happen when the playlist is empty or contains fewer items than expected.
The API supports these separate operations, but it does not prescribe a rotation policy. Decide the desired outcome before automating any destructive changes. See Google’s PlaylistItems API reference.

Prepare YouTube API access
- Create and configure a Google Cloud project. A project and enabled YouTube Data API are prerequisites for API use. Follow the current setup guidance in Google’s YouTube Data API overview.
- Authorize the account that owns or can manage the playlist. Playlist writes require OAuth authorization with an applicable scope. The documented insert scopes include
youtube,youtube.force-ssl, andyoutubepartner. A read-only API key does not authorize playlist writes. Consult the current Google API authentication guidance and the method references for scopes that apply to your chosen operations. - Use a supported client library and protect credentials. Implement the API calls in a script using a Google-supported library and its current authentication instructions. Store credential files so other local users cannot read them. Verify the library’s token refresh behavior for unattended use; this guide does not provide a validated token-storage or refresh implementation.
- Use the playlist-item ID for deletion. When listing playlist contents, retain each returned playlist-item ID. The delete method takes that ID, not merely the video’s ID.
Google documents that playlistItems.insert “Adds a resource to a playlist.” Its request must identify the playlist and resource and be authorized. See the insert reference and delete reference.

Account for API quota
As reported in Google’s YouTube Data API documentation retrieved on October 3, 2026, the default combined allocation for most endpoints is 10,000 quota units per day. Projects may have different allocations, and quota policy can change; check your project’s current quota before choosing a schedule. The documented costs are:

These per-call costs are from Google’s quota cost documentation and the individual method references. Count every call your script makes, including pagination if it lists a long playlist. A read-modify-write cycle that deletes and inserts an item costs substantially more than a list-only run, so avoid unnecessary writes.
Write and test the rotation script
Put the API logic in a script that can run independently of cron. Its basic flow should be:

- Load the required configuration and authorized credentials securely.
- List the relevant playlist items, following pagination when needed.
- Apply the rotation policy you defined and validate the proposed change before writing.
- Use the appropriate update, delete, or insert method. For deletion, pass the playlist-item ID.
- Log what the script attempted and whether the API confirmed success. Exit with a nonzero status on failure so the problem can be found in the log.
Run the script manually as the Ubuntu account that will own the crontab. Confirm that authorization works without an interactive prompt, that the intended item changes, and that a second run does not produce an unintended duplicate or repeat destructive action. Treat credentials and refresh tokens as secrets; do not put them directly in a crontab command or a world-readable file.
Schedule it in the intended user’s crontab
Cron runs a job as the owner of the crontab. Use the account that has access to the script and credentials, rather than assuming the job runs as root. Open that user’s crontab with crontab -e and add an entry such as:

15 8 * * * /usr/bin/python3 /home/ubuntu/bin/rotate_playlist.py >> /home/ubuntu/logs/rotate_playlist.log 2>&1This illustrative entry runs at 08:15 every day according to the cron schedule’s timezone. Replace the username, interpreter, script path, and log path with actual paths on your machine. Create the log directory first and make it writable by the crontab owner. Absolute paths matter because cron provides a non-interactive environment with a limited, potentially different environment from your login shell.

Set the environment the script needs
Do not assume cron will load your shell profile. Configure required environment variables explicitly in the crontab or in a protected configuration file that the script reads. Ubuntu’s cron manual documents defaults such as SHELL, LOGNAME, and HOME, and allows settings including SHELL and HOME to be overridden. Keep secret values out of logs.
Handle timezones deliberately
Ubuntu’s Noble cron manual documents CRON_TZ for scheduling a crontab in a specified timezone. The Jammy cron manual cautions that TZ in a crontab changes the command’s environment but not the schedule itself. Check the cron package and Ubuntu release installed on the target machine before relying on a timezone directive. Cron checks entries every minute, but a scheduled time is not a guarantee that required services or network access are ready.
The schedule format and user behavior are described in Ubuntu’s Noble cron manual. For a machine on a different Ubuntu release, consult the manual installed for that system.

Verify that the scheduled job ran
- Inspect the redirected log at the path in the crontab entry.
- Check the system cron log or journal using the method available on your Ubuntu release.
- If the script works manually but not under cron, compare the user, working assumptions, environment variables, file permissions, and absolute paths.
- Cron may mail command output depending on the machine’s mail configuration. File logging makes output easier to retrieve consistently.
Do not use @reboot as a substitute for dependency checks: a job started at boot is not guaranteed to wait for networking or other required services.
Troubleshoot common failures
