How to Schedule a YouTube Livestream to Start and Stop Automatically

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can schedule a YouTube livestream in YouTube Studio and enable auto-start and auto-stop, but the schedule alone will not turn your encoder or video feed on and off. For a hands-off broadcast, schedule the event in Studio and separately arrange the encoder or control system to send and stop the feed at the right times.

What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do

A scheduled event creates an upcoming stream page that viewers can find and set reminders for. The encoder sends the live feed. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings let you start or stop the YouTube stream from the encoder; they do not, according to YouTube’s instructions, schedule the encoder itself to begin or end sending video.

That means there are two jobs to arrange: create the event in YouTube Studio, then make sure your encoder or another control system starts sending the feed at the planned time and stops it when the broadcast should end. If you only schedule the event, it will not automatically power on a computer or start a camera, encoder, or feed.

Before you schedule a livestream

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube’s stated eligibility requirements include a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says the minimum age for live streaming is 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help before planning an event.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a method that can send a feed

YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console as ways to stream. The auto-start and auto-stop instructions specifically describe controlling the stream from an encoder; the help pages reviewed do not establish that the same timed behavior applies to every streaming method. If you need the feed to begin and end at specific clock times, confirm that your chosen method or control system can do that.

Allow time to prepare and test

YouTube recommends setting up an encoder livestream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Use the extra time to check the preview, stream health, picture, and audio rather than relying on the schedule as a test.

Schedule the event and enable auto-start and auto-stop

  1. Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Open the scheduling controls: In Manage, choose Schedule stream.
  3. Create or reuse an event: Set up a new scheduled stream, or reuse settings from a previous stream. Reusing settings also carries over the previous auto-start and auto-stop selections, so check them rather than assuming they are enabled or disabled as intended.
  4. Set the stream behavior: In the stream settings, enable Auto-start and Auto-stop if you want the encoder to start and stop the YouTube stream. YouTube describes these controls as allowing you to start or stop streaming from your encoder.
  5. Configure your encoder: Use the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder configuration. The stream key is the credential that lets the encoder send the feed to YouTube. Keep it private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
  6. Arrange the clock-based start and stop separately: Configure the encoder or control system to begin sending the feed at the desired start time and stop sending it when the broadcast should end. Scheduling the event and enabling auto-start/auto-stop do not, on their own, set those encoder timers.
  7. Test the event: Before the scheduled start, confirm that the encoder connects, the preview appears, and stream health, audio, and video are acceptable. Monitor the broadcast while it is live.
  8. End the broadcast: Stop the feed and end the stream as appropriate in Live Control Room. Confirm the stream has ended rather than relying on the scheduled event’s end time alone.

Make a recording plan

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, so YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. If having a replay matters, start local recording as part of your production setup and check that it is saving correctly; do not treat the YouTube archive as your only copy.

Common scheduling problems and fixes

  • The scheduled page exists, but nothing goes live: The event schedule does not start the encoder. Check that the encoder or control system is configured to send the feed at the planned time and that it has the correct stream URL and key.
  • The encoder connects, but the YouTube stream does not start as expected: Check whether Auto-start is enabled in that stream’s settings. If you reused settings, verify the inherited selection.
  • The stream remains live after the feed should end: Check Auto-stop and the encoder’s stop action. End the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate.
  • The preview or stream health is not ready: Start setup early, inspect the preview, and check audio and video before the event. YouTube recommends beginning encoder setup at least two hours ahead and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
  • You cannot enable or use live streaming: Verify channel eligibility, including verification status, recent live-streaming restrictions, and the stated minimum age requirement.
  • You need a reliable replay of a long broadcast: Record locally. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube rather than schedule a one-time camera or encoder broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs without a computer or home connection staying on, supports your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
