You can use Google Sheets as a schedule and Apps Script’s YouTube advanced service to create scheduled YouTube live broadcasts and add videos to a playlist. These are separate API operations: a scheduled broadcast is not itself a playlist item, and creating it does not start sending video. Keep the broadcast ID, playlist ID, and video ID distinct in your sheet.
What this workflow does—and what it does not do
YouTube represents a scheduled live event as a liveBroadcast resource. A playlist is a separate resource managed through playlist items. The Live Streaming API also distinguishes a broadcast, which represents the event, from a live stream, which carries video to YouTube; a broadcast can be bound to a stream. The API documentation does not describe one operation that converts a list of playlist videos into scheduled livestream events or makes a broadcast play those videos automatically.

Use Sheets to hold the schedule and the identifiers your process needs. Use Apps Script to send separate API requests: one to create each broadcast, and another to add a video to a playlist when needed. Adding a video to a playlist does not schedule a broadcast, and scheduling a broadcast does not add its video to a playlist.

This is an API-oriented workflow. It does not, by itself, establish exact Apps Script trigger timing, account eligibility, quotas, or unattended playback. Check the current requirements for your account and intended setup rather than assuming that a spreadsheet schedule will make a video play live automatically.

Prepare the spreadsheet and YouTube service
Choose explicit columns
The API does not prescribe a spreadsheet layout. One practical layout is a header row followed by one row per broadcast or playlist change:
- Scheduled start time: a future date and time for the broadcast.
- Broadcast title: the title to send in
snippet.title. - Privacy status: the value for
status.privacyStatus. - Playlist ID: the target playlist when adding an item.
- Video ID: the YouTube video to add to that playlist.
- Broadcast ID: a place to store the ID returned when a broadcast is created.
- Processing status and error: a per-row record of success or failure, so a failed row can be reviewed without treating every row as successful.
Do not use one generic “ID” column for all of these values. A broadcast ID, playlist ID, and video ID identify different resources.
Enable the Apps Script advanced service
- Open the spreadsheet and select Extensions > Apps Script.
- In the Apps Script editor, add the advanced YouTube service. If the project prompts you to enable the associated API in its Google Cloud project, follow that prompt.
- Authorize the script when you run an operation that needs YouTube access. The advanced service follows the public YouTube API’s objects, methods, and parameters; it is a wrapper for API operations, not a turnkey spreadsheet scheduler. See Google’s Apps Script YouTube service documentation.
Request only the authorization needed for the operations you use. Google’s playlist insertion implementation guide specifies OAuth 2.0 authorization; the broadcast insert reference lists the authorization scopes for that operation.

Create a scheduled live broadcast
For each event, call liveBroadcasts.insert with a title, a future scheduled start time, and a privacy status. The required request fields are snippet.title, snippet.scheduledStartTime, and status.privacyStatus. The start time must be in the future and within a range YouTube can reliably schedule; do not submit an old time or assume the API will accept arbitrarily distant dates.
With the Apps Script advanced service enabled, the request body follows the API resource structure. A minimal example of the body to build from a validated sheet row is:
const broadcastResource = {
snippet: {
title: titleFromSheet,
scheduledStartTime: startTimeAsRfc3339
},
status: {
privacyStatus: privacyFromSheet
}
};
const broadcast = YouTube.LiveBroadcasts.insert(
broadcastResource,
'snippet,status'
);
const broadcastId = broadcast.id;
Supply startTimeAsRfc3339 as an RFC 3339 date-time value, including its time-zone offset, and validate that it is still in the future when the script runs. Store the returned broadcast.id in the broadcast ID column. Creating the broadcast schedules the event resource; it does not send video, start a player, or prove that a stream is bound to it. Consult the Live Streaming API reference for the resource model and the insert method for request details.

Add a video to a playlist as a separate operation
To add an item, call playlistItems.insert with the target playlist ID and a resource ID identifying the YouTube video. For the advanced service, the request body has this shape:
const playlistItemResource = {
snippet: {
playlistId: playlistIdFromSheet,
resourceId: {
kind: 'youtube#video',
videoId: videoIdFromSheet
}
}
};
const playlistItem = YouTube.PlaylistItems.insert(
playlistItemResource,
'snippet'
);
const playlistItemId = playlistItem.id;
Save the returned item ID or record the error against the row. Playlist insertion is OAuth-authorized. It can fail because the caller lacks permission, the playlist or video is missing, the playlist is unsupported or at capacity, or the video is already present. Treat each row as an operation that can fail independently, not as an all-or-nothing batch. See Google’s PlaylistItems: insert, playlist implementation guide, and YouTube Data API errors.
Make reruns and playlist ordering safe
Record what succeeded before retrying
Write the returned broadcast ID or playlist-item ID and a success status back to the corresponding row. On rerun, skip completed rows or deliberately inspect them first. Retrying blindly can encounter duplicate playlist items or create an additional broadcast; the API’s documented error cases include duplicates, and a retry is not automatically an update.

Check sorting before setting a playlist position
If your workflow needs to place an item at a particular position, the playlist must use manual ordering. Do not send a position update assuming that every playlist’s current sort mode permits it. See PlaylistItems: update.
Preserve fields when updating a broadcast
Creating a broadcast and updating one are different operations. For an update, use the required resource ID and the scheduling or monitoring fields relevant to the method. When a request includes a mutable part, omitted values in that part can be reset or removed. Build the update body from current values you intend to preserve; a partial body generated from an old or incomplete sheet row can unintentionally change the broadcast. Review LiveBroadcasts: update before implementing edits.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose manual scheduling or a sheet-driven workflow
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio | A smaller schedule that is straightforward to manage manually. | Less repeatable for bulk row-by-row operations; you handle event entry in the interface. |
| Google Sheets and Apps Script | A repeatable process where a sheet holds row-level schedule and playlist metadata. | Requires API setup, authorization, error handling, careful ID management, and ongoing maintenance. |
These are practical workflow trade-offs, not a measured comparison of the two approaches. Google’s Apps Script sample and API references establish that the service exposes YouTube operations; they do not provide an official turnkey spreadsheet scheduler.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The script cannot find a YouTube service or method: confirm the advanced YouTube service is added to the Apps Script project and that any prompted API enablement is complete.
- Authorization fails: run the script interactively and complete the requested OAuth authorization. Confirm the authorized account can access the target YouTube channel and playlist.
- A broadcast is rejected: check that title, future scheduled start time, and privacy status are present and valid. Recheck the time zone and whether the requested start time is within YouTube’s reliable scheduling range.
- A playlist insertion fails: verify the playlist ID and video ID, confirm the authorized account has permission, and check whether the item is already present or the playlist cannot accept another item. Record the API error for that row.
- An ordering change fails: verify that the playlist uses manual ordering before attempting to set a position.
- An update changes or clears something unexpectedly: inspect every mutable field in the part sent by the update request and include the existing values you want to retain.
- The scheduled event exists but no video is appearing: creating a broadcast is not the same as sending video. The Live Streaming API models the broadcast and stream as separate resources; inspect the stream setup and binding separately rather than expecting a playlist insertion to start transmission.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than build a spreadsheet-driven schedule of broadcast events, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not start a camera feed. Try StreamNeo’s free first day.
