What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio, but configure any missing-file fallback in your encoder or automation software—not in YouTube. YouTube’s backup encoder and HLS backup-server options protect the incoming stream feed; they do not select a replacement playlist when a media file is unavailable. Test the exact missing-file scenario before the broadcast.
What YouTube can—and cannot—switch to
There are two different kinds of fallback, and they solve different problems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Content fallback: when a video file is missing or unusable, play a different clip, scene, or playlist. Set this up in the encoder or a compatible automation layer. The behavior depends on that software and its configuration.
- Encoder or ingestion failover: keep a valid feed reaching YouTube if the primary encoder or its network path fails. YouTube documents backup encoder testing and, for HLS, a backup server URL.
A backup encoder can keep sending a feed that still contains the same missing content. A backup playlist can provide different content but still depend on the same encoder and connection. YouTube does not document a setting that automatically switches playlists when a local file is missing.

- Open the Live Control Room: in YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Manage.
- Schedule the event: select Schedule stream. Reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new scheduled stream, then set the title, description, visibility, and other event details.
- Share the event if appropriate: a scheduled stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming, and subscribers can choose to receive a reminder. This is not guaranteed placement. (YouTube Help, “Manage live stream settings.”)
- Retrieve the connection details: in the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a secret: YouTube describes it as the credential that tells the encoder where to send its feed. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
Configure a fallback for unavailable media
The encoder or automation system must decide what to do if a playlist item cannot be read. YouTube’s schedule and failover controls do not make that decision for it.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Choose a primary item and a fallback: identify the intended video and a known-good replacement clip, scene, or playlist. Decide whether an operator will switch manually or whether your verified configuration will switch automatically.
- Check the actual media paths: make sure the machine or environment running the encoder can access the files. A path that works on your editing computer may not exist on a separate streaming machine or server.
- Set up the behavior in your chosen software: configure its playlist, automation, or other fallback controls. There is no universal rule for how encoders handle missing files, so confirm the behavior for your software and version rather than assuming that a playlist will skip an entry or select a backup.
- Rehearse the failure: use a test copy of a referenced file and remove it, rename it, or otherwise make it unavailable. Confirm what the output actually shows and plays, then adjust the configuration. Test unreadable and moved-file cases too if those are realistic risks for your setup.
Using OBS’s VLC Video source
OBS documents a VLC Video source that can play media in a playlist, with Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist options. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. These documented controls establish playlist playback, not guaranteed substitution of a backup playlist when an entry is missing. For exact conditional behavior, record your OBS version, operating system, source type, media paths, and any automation or plugin version, then test that setup.
Test the stream and any encoder failover
YouTube’s published preparation guidance recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are YouTube’s preparation intervals, not a guarantee that every setup needs exactly that amount of time.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Connect the encoder using the scheduled stream’s URL and key.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check that both picture and sound are correct before selecting Go live.
- If you use a backup encoder, test that separately from the missing-file fallback. YouTube’s guidance says to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
- At the end of the event, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder.
Troubleshoot the likely failure points
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The expected fallback clip does not play | The encoder’s handling of an unavailable item differs from what you expected, or no fallback behavior is configured. | Reproduce the failure with a test file and verify the encoder or automation configuration. Do not assume YouTube will choose another playlist. |
| A playlist item is skipped, blank, or otherwise wrong | The file is unavailable, unreadable, moved, or referenced by a path the encoder cannot access. | Check the file and its path from the machine running the encoder; test absent, unreadable, and moved-file cases. |
| The VLC Video source is not available in OBS | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. |
| The scheduled stream has no usable preview | The encoder may not be connected to the scheduled event with its stream URL and key, or it may not be sending a working feed. | Check the connection details and encoder output in the Live Control Room before selecting Go live. |
| The player does not roll over to the backup encoder | The backup path may not be configured or may not be functioning. | Repeat YouTube’s failover test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, and confirm the result in the player. |
Keep the content eligible and protect your stream key
Choose media you have the rights to stream and check that it complies with YouTube’s rules. Scheduling does not grant permission to use copyrighted music or video, and a backup clip is subject to the same obligations as the primary content. Keep the stream key private because it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your stream.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. This is a way to run a continuous stream from the cloud, not a documented conditional rule that substitutes a backup playlist when a particular file is missing—test your content workflow for that requirement.
