Scheduling a YouTube Live stream does not, by itself, start the broadcast. It creates an upcoming event page; a live video feed still has to be sent to YouTube. For an encoder stream, the usual flow is to schedule the event, connect and start the encoder, check the preview, then click Go live. YouTube’s Auto-start setting can change how encoder-started streams are controlled, but it does not turn on your computer, launch your encoder, or create a video feed.
What “go live automatically” means on YouTube
A scheduled stream and an active broadcast are separate states. Scheduling gives viewers an upcoming event to find and lets them choose Notify me; it does not supply the video or audio feed. The scheduled event can exist before YouTube is receiving a stream. YouTube’s scheduling instructions describe creating the event, while its encoder workflow separately requires sending the feed and going live.

YouTube’s Auto-start option is narrower than its name may suggest: when enabled, it lets you start or stop streaming from your encoder. It does not power on a computer, open streaming software, choose a source, or start a prerecorded video at a set time. You still need a device or cloud service configured to send a feed.
Before you schedule: check channel eligibility
- Your channel must be verified.
- Your channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- You must be at least 16 years old to livestream under YouTube’s current general eligibility guidance.
These are YouTube’s stated requirements; check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and restrictions page if access is unavailable or the rules may have changed.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create > Go live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage, then select Schedule stream.
- Choose whether to reuse settings from an earlier stream or create a new stream.
- Enter the event details available in the interface, including title, privacy, and scheduled date and time. Review the details before saving.
Exact labels can shift as YouTube updates Studio. Follow the current scheduling flow in YouTube Help if your interface differs. Once scheduled, viewers may see the event as upcoming and select Notify me. That reminder is for viewers; it does not start your broadcast.
Choose how you will send the live feed
YouTube supports webcam, mobile, console, and encoder workflows. The appropriate method depends on what you are broadcasting and what control you need.

YouTube says professional-grade hardware encoders are recommended for higher-production events, but expensive equipment is not required to get started. See its overview of ways to stream on YouTube.

- In Live Control Room, open the scheduled stream and locate the stream settings.
- Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it like a password used to connect the encoder; do not show it in a public screenshot or share it with someone who should not be able to send a feed.
- Open the stream settings and review Auto-start and, if needed, Auto-stop. When these settings are on, YouTube says you can start or stop streaming from your encoder. This changes stream control; it does not schedule your computer or encoder to run.
- Start the encoder so it sends the intended audio and video. Check that the preview appears in Live Control Room, confirm the source and sound, then select Go live for the standard scheduled-encoder flow.
YouTube’s settings page scopes its Auto-start and Auto-stop instructions to encoder or mobile streams, not webcam streams. Consult Manage live stream settings for the current controls.

Timing and test checklist
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder two hours before an event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees of uptime or mandatory waiting periods. Use the lead time to catch connection and source problems before viewers arrive.
- Confirm the channel is eligible and the scheduled time and privacy are correct.
- Check that the encoder has the right server URL and stream key, and that the key has not been exposed.
- Start sending the feed early enough for the preview to appear.
- Check picture, audio, and the selected source in Live Control Room.
- Know whether your setup expects you to click Go live or is configured to start from the encoder with Auto-start enabled.
- For streams shorter than 12 hours, YouTube says the stream can be automatically archived; it recommends keeping a local archive backup. Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as your only copy.
See YouTube’s live streaming tips for its event-preparation recommendations and live-stream archive guidance for archiving details.

Why a scheduled stream may not start
The event is scheduled, but no video appears
The event page does not generate a feed. Start the source device or cloud service and encoder, then verify that YouTube receives the stream. Scheduling alone cannot make a powered-off source transmit.

The stream key or server URL is rejected
Recheck that the encoder uses the settings for the correct scheduled stream and that there are no copying errors. Treat the key as sensitive; if you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it using the available YouTube controls and update your encoder.
Auto-start does not run at the scheduled time
Auto-start is not a timer that powers on a computer or opens an encoder. Ensure the device and software are already running, the source is available, and the encoder can send the feed. If you need unattended operation, use a system designed to remain online and initiate the feed.
The viewer sees an upcoming page instead of live video
That is expected until the feed is sent and the broadcast is started. The upcoming page and its Notify me reminder do not indicate that the creator’s stream has begun.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not start a camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
Monthly access is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for plan lengths and details. Start your free StreamNeo day.
