Schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder to send the prerecorded video as the stream’s live feed. Scheduling creates the upcoming broadcast and watch page; it does not, by itself, make a video file play automatically. The encoder must handle playback, looping, and any timed start.
What you need to set up
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a scheduled broadcast in YouTube Studio.
- An encoder—software or hardware—that can send video to YouTube and play the prerecorded file you want to broadcast.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload bandwidth for the selected video quality.
- The YouTube server URL and stream key from the event setup. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
YouTube identifies OBS as a software encoder option and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. You do not need expensive equipment just to get started. The right choice depends on production complexity, the computer or hardware available, reliability needs, and whether the encoder supports the file playback or playlist automation you need. YouTube’s general setup pages do not assess individual encoders’ autoplay features.

Schedule the live event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open Manage.
- Select Schedule stream. Choose to reuse settings from a previous event or create a new event, then enter the event details and scheduled start time.
- Save the event. YouTube creates an upcoming watch page that you can share; viewers can request reminders.
- Open the event’s stream setup and note its YouTube server URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; if it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
The scheduled event and the video feed are separate: YouTube provides the broadcast, while the encoder transmits the audiovisual content to YouTube’s server using the stream key.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteConfigure the encoder to play the video
In the encoder, select the prerecorded file as the outgoing video source. Set any playlist order, repeat behavior, and start automation in that encoder—not in the YouTube scheduling form. The exact controls vary by encoder and version; YouTube’s general scheduling guide does not prescribe application-specific media-source or playlist steps. Before relying on automation, confirm the encoder’s current documentation and test the entire workflow with the exact file and settings you intend to use.

Choose a suitable stream connection and video settings
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, for stream ingestion. Use a protocol supported by both your encoder and the YouTube event.
- HLS is another option for supported codecs or HDR workflows, but YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP and has protocol-specific constraints. Choose it only when your encoder and video requirements call for it.
- Use an encoder configuration that matches the file and the upload capacity available. Test the stream at the chosen quality rather than assuming a connection can sustain it.
- Set keyframes two seconds apart; YouTube recommends this frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
Test and start the scheduled stream
- Set up the encoder well ahead of the event. YouTube recommends configuring it at least two hours before the stream.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, so YouTube can receive the feed and you can check it.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and inspect the preview. Confirm the intended video is playing and check both picture and sound before selecting Go live.
- Once live, monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast. A scheduled start does not replace checking that the encoder is sending the correct feed.
- When finished, end the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop the encoder from sending. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having a video file does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. Before scheduling, check that you have permission for the content and that the stream complies with YouTube’s rules. A live stream that loops prerecorded content still needs appropriate rights; use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid. Reused content and copyright are distinct considerations: permission to use material does not guarantee a channel will meet YouTube’s monetization policies. Review the current YouTube policies that apply to your channel and content.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The event is scheduled, but no video plays. | The event exists, but the encoder is not sending a feed, or its video source is not configured. | Confirm the encoder is running, its output source is the intended file, and the event’s server URL and stream key are entered correctly. |
| The wrong event receives the video, or YouTube rejects the connection. | An incorrect, outdated, or mismatched server URL or stream key. | Compare the encoder settings with the intended event’s current stream setup. If the key may be exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| The preview is blank or the event is not ready at start time. | The encoder was started too late, has not connected, or is not outputting the selected source. | Start early, inspect Live Control Room’s preview, and verify the encoder’s output before selecting Go live. |
| Video or audio quality is poor or unstable. | The selected stream quality may exceed available upload capacity, or the encoder’s output settings may not suit the connection. | Test at a quality your upload connection can sustain, check the encoder’s output and audio source, and monitor the preview and live stream. |
| The video plays once but does not repeat, or a timed start fails. | Looping and start automation are controlled by the encoder; scheduling alone does not enable them. | Check the current documentation for your encoder and test its file, playlist, loop, and start behavior before the event. |
| The feed stops during a long broadcast. | The encoder or its computer/network may have stopped sending. | Check the sending device, connection, and encoder status. For unattended continuous streaming, consider a cloud service that can keep sending without a home computer. |
