You can schedule a Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan using Task Scheduler on Windows 10. For routine protection, Microsoft recommends a quick scan in most cases; scheduled scans supplement, rather than replace, real-time protection. The Task Scheduler instructions below are specifically documented for Windows 10. Windows 11 has applicable scan-scheduling policies, but the cited end-user procedure does not confirm identical menus for every Windows 11 version.
Schedule a scan with Task Scheduler on Windows 10
- Search for Task Scheduler from the taskbar and open it.
- In the left pane, expand Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows, scroll down, and select Windows Defender.
- In the center pane, double-click Windows Defender Scheduled Scan.
- Open the Triggers tab and select New.
- Choose the frequency and start time, then save the trigger and task changes.
This is Microsoft Support’s documented end-user route for Windows 10. If the task or labels differ on your device, check the instructions for your exact Windows version rather than assuming the Windows 10 steps apply unchanged. Microsoft Support: Help protect my device with Windows Security

Use a quick scan for routine scheduling
Microsoft recommends a quick scan for most routine scheduled scanning. It checks processes, memory, user profiles, and certain locations. Alongside always-on real-time protection, this helps cover malware that starts with the system and kernel-level malware. Microsoft Learn: Schedule antivirus scans

Reserve full scans for specific needs
Microsoft generally does not recommend scheduling full scans: they can take hours or days and use more system resources. Daily scheduled scans are quick scans; weekly scans can be configured as quick or full scans. Microsoft Learn: Schedule antivirus scans

Allow for idle time and start-time variation
The schedule uses the device’s local time, but the scan may not begin exactly at the selected hour. By default, the policy to start a scheduled scan only when the computer is on and not in use is enabled; a scan can wait until the device is idle. Randomization can also shift the start time. Microsoft says Defender checks for a protection update 15 minutes before a scheduled scan by default. If a scheduled full scan is underway while a laptop is unplugged and on battery, it stops and runs again at the next scheduled time. Configure scan schedules for managed devices
For devices managed by an organization, administrators can use Group Policy or PowerShell instead of configuring each task manually. Use the management method that governs the target devices and check policy precedence before applying settings.

Group Policy
- On a machine with Group Policy management tools, open the target Group Policy Object.
- Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus > Scan.
- Configure the required scan policies, then deploy the GPO to the appropriate organizational units.
This method requires Group Policy Editor and permission to create or edit GPOs. The policy settings include scan timing and behavior; they are not proof that every unmanaged consumer PC scans at the policy defaults. Microsoft Learn: Schedule antivirus scans

Microsoft documents Set-MpPreference for configuring scheduled scans. For example, Microsoft shows this command for a daily quick scan at approximately 12:30 p.m.:
Rank #3
Set-MpPreference -ScanScheduleQuickScanTime 12:30:00 -ScanScheduleOffset 0 -RandomizeScheduleTaskTimes $false -ScanOnlyIfIdleEnabled $false
Its example for a weekly full scan on Wednesday at approximately 12:30 p.m. is:
Set-MpPreference -ScanParameters FullScan -ScanScheduleDay Wednesday -ScanScheduleTime 12:30:00 -ScanScheduleOffset 0 -RandomizeScheduleTaskTimes $false
These are documented examples, not a guarantee that the settings are right for every managed device. Review the applicable parameters and policy precedence before deployment. Available controls include scan type, day and local time, randomization, idle-only behavior, CPU guidance, and catch-up settings. |---|---|---|
| Task Scheduler | Manually scheduling a scan on an individual Windows 10 device | Local task configuration; Microsoft’s end-user steps are for Windows 10 |
| Group Policy | Applying scan settings to organizational devices | Requires Group Policy tools and permission to create or edit GPOs |
| PowerShell | Scripted configuration of managed devices | Requires suitable administrative access and review of applicable settings and policy precedence |
Microsoft’s policy reference lists relevant scan scheduling policies for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, but that does not establish that the Windows 10 Task Scheduler instructions above match every Windows 11 interface. Microsoft Learn: Defender policy CSP
Understand policy defaults before relying on a time
For Group Policy, Microsoft lists 2:00 a.m. as the default time when the daily quick-scan time is not configured; a daily interval of zero means no daily quick scan. For a weekly scan, the default day is Never and the default time is 2:00 a.m. These are policy defaults, not a claim that every consumer Windows installation scans at 2:00 a.m. Microsoft Learn: Schedule antivirus scans
For an administrator configuring a weekly schedule that must not wait for idle time, Microsoft says to disable the policy that starts a scheduled scan only when the computer is on and not in use, then define the schedule. That is an administrative choice for a specific requirement, not a general recommendation for home users. Microsoft Learn: Schedule antivirus scans
