To change what viewers see without ending a YouTube livestream, change the media or scene in your encoder—such as OBS—not in YouTube’s viewer playlist. Keep the live event running and do not click End Stream. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow separates controlling the live event from choosing the content sent by the encoder. The official pages reviewed do not establish whether a separate API or newer YouTube control can schedule a playlist change during an active broadcast.
What “playlist change” means in a livestream
A YouTube queue or playlist is for organizing videos someone watches on YouTube. It does not change the media being sent from your encoder to a live event. YouTube’s queue instructions describe a viewer-side queue; it also does not persist after the browser is closed, though it can be saved as a playlist.
For an encoder-based broadcast, the playlist or media source lives in the encoder. OBS, for example, offers a VLC Video source that can contain a list of local media files, with optional loop and shuffle settings. OBS documents that source here. A scheduled YouTube livestream, by contrast, is a live event arranged to start in the future; scheduling the event does not schedule which media plays after it is already live.
Set up an OBS playlist before going live
- Install VLC and check its architecture. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. The OBS documentation notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene used for the program, add a VLC Video source and add your locally available media files in the order you want them to play.
- Choose loop and shuffle behavior. Enable looping if the playlist should repeat. Leave shuffle off when the sequence matters. OBS documents these options, but does not document timed playlist replacement in this source.
- Check the output scene. OBS scenes and sources determine what is included in the encoder output. Confirm the VLC source is visible in the scene that will be streamed; OBS explains the relationship in its Sources Guide.
- Rehearse the transition. Confirm the files play and that changing the media or scene produces the intended output. If the change must happen at a precise clock time, use an encoder automation or control method that supports timed actions, then verify it in a private or unlisted rehearsal. The reviewed official documentation does not identify a particular timed-automation add-on or guarantee wall-clock scheduling for a VLC playlist.
Start the YouTube event, then change media in OBS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the scheduled live event.
- Connect the event to your encoder using the stream details shown in YouTube.
- Start sending the encoder output and wait for the preview in Live Control Room.
- Click Go live in YouTube when ready. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes connecting the encoder, starting the signal, waiting for preview, and then going live.
- At the planned change, switch the media or scene in OBS while leaving the YouTube event active. A scene or source change is an encoder operation, not an instruction to end the YouTube event.
- Use End Stream only when the broadcast itself is over, then stop sending content from the encoder as appropriate.
Choose the right kind of change
- Playlist advances when a file finishes: Use the encoder’s media playlist and arrange its items in order. This is media progression, not a clock-time schedule.
- Change at a specific time: Use a timed encoder control or automation method that supports that action; rehearse it. The official OBS page cited here covers loop and shuffle, not a built-in wall-clock playlist scheduler.
- Switch to a different block or layout: Change the OBS source or scene feeding the output. OBS scenes and sources define the stream layout.
- Recover from a missing or failed file: Test the playlist and transition in advance and decide what viewers should see if playback ends unexpectedly. Exact recovery controls depend on the configured encoder workflow.
Eligibility and practical checks
YouTube’s current live-streaming help says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and meet the stated minimum age of 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance if Live Control Room does not let you start the event.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the scheduled event is the one connected to the encoder.
- Confirm the media source is in the active output scene and its files are available to the machine running OBS.
- Keep shuffle disabled if the intended sequence is important; use loop only if replaying the list is part of the plan.
- Do not treat the YouTube viewer queue as an encoder playlist.
- Do not click End Stream merely to change the media. That action ends the live event rather than changing its program content.
Common problems and fixes
The YouTube queue changes, but viewers still see the old live content
The queue changes what the operator watches in YouTube, not what the encoder sends. Put the intended files in the encoder’s media source and make the change there.
The VLC Video source is missing or unavailable
Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

The expected item does not play next
Review the order of files in the source and check whether shuffle is enabled. If the change is meant to occur at a clock time rather than when an item finishes, verify that the chosen encoder control supports timed actions.
The program disappears after a scene switch
Check that the destination scene contains the intended visible source and that the scene is part of the output. OBS sources and scenes define the stream layout.

The event ends when you meant to change the playlist
Use the encoder to change media or scenes; do not select End Stream. YouTube documents that control as the way to end an encoder stream.
