Scheduling creates the event; it does not start the broadcast or keep a feed playing on its own. At service time, connect an encoder with the event’s stream URL and key, start sending video, check the Live Control Room preview, then select Go live.
For a continuous or 24/7 worship stream, you also need a dependable playout and recovery workflow. YouTube’s scheduling instructions cover scheduled encoder events, not unattended round-the-clock playback or guaranteed reconnection. This guide shows how to schedule and test the broadcast, what to plan for continuous operation, and how to avoid common rights and archive problems.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live, then open Manage and choose Schedule Stream. You can create a new event or reuse settings from an earlier one. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
- Enter the event details. Set the title, description, visibility, and scheduled start time, then save the event. Review the audience and other event settings before publishing the watch page.
- Share the watch page. The scheduled event gives viewers a page they can visit ahead of time and may let them set a reminder. Check the event from your channel and on a mobile device so you know the link is reachable.
- Keep the stream key private. The encoder uses the stream URL and key to send its feed to YouTube. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the event. You can manage stream settings in YouTube Studio; reset the key if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Creating the scheduled event and broadcasting are separate actions. The encoder must connect and send a feed, and an operator must still select Go live after checking the preview.
Choose how to send the worship program
YouTube supports software encoding and hardware encoding. It does not require a dedicated hardware encoder. Choose based on the equipment you already have, the complexity of the production, and whether you want a separate device dedicated to encoding. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, while also covering software encoding in its live streaming tips.

Whichever path you choose, test the exact program feed—including representative speech, music, and movement—not just a static test image. Confirm that audio and video reach the Live Control Room preview as expected.
Set encoder quality and test the feed
YouTube’s published encoder recommendations include RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its recommended bitrates include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality: the encoder, the source and the available upload bandwidth all matter. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the relevant resolution and frame rate.

- Use RTMPS where your encoder offers it, and set the encoder to CBR.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and keep it at four seconds or less.
- Check that your internet upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate. Test the real connection and feed rather than relying only on a nominal internet plan speed.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, and stream-health warnings before the service begins.
YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Use that lead time to catch connection or configuration problems while there is still time to correct them. The YouTube streaming tips also recommend checking stream health, event access from channel and watch pages and mobile devices, and any local recording file. If you plan to use a backup encoder, test it before relying on it.
Go live at the scheduled time
- Open the scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Connect the selected encoder to the event using its stream URL and key; start the encoder so it sends the program feed.
- Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check the sound, picture, and stream health.
- When the preview is ready and the event is due to begin, select Go live.
- During the service, monitor the feed and the encoder’s connection. If you are making a local recording for an archive, check that the file is growing.
A scheduled watch page does not itself send content. If the encoder is not connected, there is no program feed to preview or broadcast.

Plan separately for continuous or 24/7 playback
A scheduled event is useful for announcing a service, but scheduling alone does not establish unattended 24/7 playout, an automatic restart, or guaranteed reconnection after an outage. Decide how the program will play continuously and who or what will respond if the encoder, computer, network, or YouTube connection fails. Test the recovery procedure before depending on it for a long-running worship stream.
Very long streams have a separate replay limitation. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a complete service recording matters, make a local recording or plan shorter stream blocks rather than relying on the automatic archive. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
Church use does not automatically establish permission to stream every song or recording. YouTube’s live-stream terms require streamers to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Confirm that permissions cover the specific songs and recordings, the relevant territories, and online live use.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may show a placeholder image and warn the streamer; if the content remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. If the music is licensed, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and resolve permissions before the service, not after a warning appears.

Troubleshooting a scheduled worship stream
