To keep cartoons on air, an encoder or cloud service must send the video to YouTube. Before you start, secure written livestream rights for the cartoons and decide how you will handle YouTube’s archive limit: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
What you need for a 24/7 cartoon stream
Think of this as two connected jobs: YouTube Studio schedules the broadcast, while an encoder supplies the pictures and sound. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a format it can stream. The encoder must connect to YouTube and keep sending the feed; a scheduled event by itself does not play a video continuously. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live-streaming overview.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Its guidance also says streamers must be at least 16; under-16 participation is subject to adult-presence conditions. Check YouTube’s current eligibility guidance for details.
- A video source and encoder: YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Dedicated hardware is optional; choose based on continuous-operation needs, monitoring, recovery and budget.
- The YouTube stream URL and stream key, entered in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Documented rights to livestream the cartoons on YouTube in the relevant territories, including any planned repeat or continuous playout and archive use.
- A plan for monitoring, recovery and local recording if replays matter.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go live → Manage. Schedule a stream, then enter its title, privacy setting, planned start time and other event details. YouTube’s interface can change; see the live-streaming help page for current guidance. The YouTube API also represents scheduled broadcasts with title, scheduled start time and privacy fields, alongside controls for recording, DVR and automatic start or stop: LiveBroadcasts API.
- Set the audience designation in Live Control Room. Decide based on whether the content is directed at children; cartoon subject matter alone does not settle the question. If the stream is directed at children, select Yes, it’s made for kids. YouTube places these audience controls in Live Control Room rather than Classic live streaming tools. Review YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for current interface details.
- Choose an encoder workflow. Configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, following the encoder instructions. Software and standalone hardware are both supported; YouTube does not designate one as best for every channel.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the video and audio are correct, the event is accessible as intended, and your monitoring and local recording processes work. When the preview is ready, click Go live.
- Test the whole setup—including recovery if the encoder or connection fails—before relying on it for continuous service. Scheduling the event does not guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting.
Set the audience correctly for children’s content
If the stream is made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay and Super Chat. It also disables comments on upcoming streams and archives, as well as reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may appear. Do not advertise chat, reminders or personalized advertising as features of a made-for-kids broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for audience controls.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Twelve hours is an archive threshold in YouTube’s guidance, not a stated maximum duration for a live broadcast. If complete replays matter, divide the operation into shorter sessions and keep a local recording as a backup. Read YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance before choosing your replay plan.

Clear cartoon rights before going live
Only broadcast cartoons for which you have permission covering the intended use. Ask the rights holder or authorized distributor whether the license covers YouTube livestreaming, the territories you will serve, repeated or continuous playout, and keeping or publishing archives. Buying a DVD, finding an online copy, or having permission to upload a video does not by itself establish a right to rebroadcast it live.
YouTube identifies a copyright strike on an active stream or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast as potential triggers for streaming restrictions. A setup guide is not a license, and no particular cartoon’s rights or terms can be assumed. Review YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions and the encoder and Content ID information. Monetization depends on channel eligibility and the broadcast’s status; do not assume that a licensed stream will earn revenue.

Keep a 24/7 operation monitored
A continuous broadcast needs an operating plan, not just a start time. YouTube’s live-streaming tips include checking local archive growth, confirming the event is accessible, monitoring audio and video, and testing failover. Decide who will respond to a dropped feed, how the encoder or service will reconnect, and what viewers should see during a source or network problem. For long runs, verify that local recordings are being created and that storage is not filling up.
