How to Scan RFID With an iPhone: NFC Tags vs. UHF Readers

An iPhone reads NFC tags through its built-in reader and a compatible app. UHF RFID inventory tags need an external Bluetooth reader. Here is how to tell which you have and how to scan each.

An iPhone can scan NFC tags with its built-in NFC reader, usually through a compatible app. It cannot be assumed to scan every tag described as RFID. “RFID” is a broad category, and the answer depends on which kind of tag you have: NFC tags work with the iPhone’s built-in reader, while UHF RFID inventory tags generally require an external Bluetooth reader and supported iOS software.

Identify your tag before you scan

Most stickers, cards, and key fobs that respond when touched to a phone are NFC tags. Warehouse and asset-tracking tags are often UHF RFID tags, which are read from a greater distance and need different hardware. The table below shows which route fits each case.

Tag type Typical use Built-in iPhone NFC External reader needed?
NFC tags with NDEF data (Types 1 to 5) Links, contact details, app triggers Yes, through an app built on Core NFC No
Other protocol-specific NFC tag families Varies by product Only where Apple’s framework and the app support that family Depends on the tag and app
UHF RFID inventory tags Pallets, inventory, asset tracking Not a documented route for the built-in reader Yes, a compatible Bluetooth RFID reader plus a supported iOS app or SDK

Scanning an NFC tag with an iPhone

Apple’s Core NFC documentation states: “Using Core NFC, you can read Near Field Communication (NFC) tags of types 1 through 5 that contain data in the NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF).” That is the boundary of the built-in route. A tag outside that scope may not respond at all, even if its packaging says RFID.

Scan from inside an app

  1. Install an NFC reader app whose description says it reads NFC tags and works with NDEF data.
  2. Open the app and choose its scan or read option. This starts an in-app NFC reader session.
  3. Hold the top back edge of the iPhone, where the NFC antenna sits on most models, against the tag. NFC works only at very short range, so keep the phone close and still.
  4. Wait for the app to respond. If the tag contains NDEF data, the app displays its content.

Use background tag reading

Apple says background tag reading is supported on iPhone XS and later. It works with compatible NDEF URI tags, and when it triggers, the iPhone can display a notification without you opening an app first. Background reading is not always available. It may be unavailable while any of the following is in use:

If background reading does not trigger, switch to in-app scanning.

When an NFC tag does not read

  • Check the tag type. A UHF inventory tag will not respond to the built-in NFC route. A tag must be NFC and carry NDEF data for Core NFC apps to read it.
  • Check the app. Confirm it supports your tag’s data format.
  • Remove obstructions. Thick cases or metal backing can interfere with NFC. Try the tag with the case removed.
  • Adjust position. Bring the phone closer and hold it still for a moment.
  • Close other sessions. Stop any active Core NFC reader session, and check whether Wallet, the camera, or Airplane Mode is blocking background reading.

Reading UHF RFID inventory tags

For UHF RFID, the documented iOS route uses an external reader. Zebra documents an iOS SDK for Bluetooth RFID readers. The SDK manages the reader connection and passes RFID data to the app. Zebra lists RFD40 family devices among its supported hardware, and the Zebra material describes an iOS mobile reader app workflow for this hardware.

  • The exact reader model is on Zebra’s supported list, including the RFD40 family.
  • The iPhone’s iOS version and the app or SDK version are compatible with that reader.
  • Your tags use a UHF standard the reader supports.
  • The reader is approved for radio use in the country where you will deploy it.
  • Your inventory software vendor supports the Zebra SDK route.

This is a separate use case from NFC scanning. It is worth the extra hardware only when your tags are UHF RFID and you need inventory-style reading.

Scope of what is confirmed

The Apple and Zebra material supports the NFC and external-reader routes described above. It does not confirm compatibility for every consumer app, every NFC tag, every iPhone model, or every RFID tag sold online. Check each app’s listing and each reader’s supported-device list before relying on a specific combination.
