You can scan paper with the phone you already have: use Apple Notes or Files on an iPhone or iPad, or Google Drive on Android or iOS. These built-in scan flows detect page edges, let you correct the crop, and can combine several pages into one scan. Review the result before saving so no text or pages are missing.
Choose where you want the scan to go
| Route | Devices | Where the scan goes | Format notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Notes | iPhone or iPad | Inside the note you opened or created | Apple’s scanning instructions do not specify an export format on the cited page. |
| Apple Files | iPhone or iPad | A location you choose in Files | Apple’s scanning instructions do not specify an export format on the cited page. |
| Google Drive | Android, iPhone or iPad | Your Drive, optionally in a chosen folder | Android instructions explicitly offer PDF or JPG. The iOS instructions describe searchable PDFs but do not document the same format selector. |
If you want the scan attached to a note, use Notes. If you want to choose a filing location on your Apple device, use Files. Choose Drive when you want the saved scan in your Google Drive. App menus and format choices differ by platform, so use the route that matches where you need the file.

Before you scan
- Put the paper on a flat, contrasting surface and make sure the whole page is visible.
- Use even light; keep your hand and phone shadow off small receipt text.
- Hold the phone steady and frame the page without cutting off printed edges.
- For several pages from one document, plan to add them in the same scan session.
These are practical photography tips, not a guarantee of a particular resolution or scan quality. The official instructions explain framing and crop adjustment but do not set a lighting or resolution threshold.

- Adjust the corners if needed, then keep the scan.
- For a multi-page document, scan and keep each additional page before finishing.
The scan stays inside the note. Apple’s cited page explains the scanning flow but does not specify an export format there.
Scan directly to Apple Files
- Open Files and tap the More menu.
- Choose Scan Documents, then frame the page.
- Capture the page and adjust its corners. Add further pages in the same session if needed.
- When the scan is complete, choose a location and save.
This is the Apple route to use when you want to file the result in a location you select rather than keep it inside a note. Apple’s cited support page does not specify an export format for this flow: Apple’s scanning instructions.

Scan with Google Drive
On Android
- Open Google Drive and tap the camera icon to open the scanner.
- Frame the document and capture it.
- Review the crop. Use the available crop or rotate, filter, or clean controls as needed. Retake or delete a page that is blurry or incomplete.
- Tap Add to include more pages from the same document.
- Name the file, choose PDF or JPG, and optionally select a Drive folder before saving.
Google’s Android Drive instructions document these capture and save options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn iPhone or iPad
- In Google Drive, tap Add, then Scan; you can also use the camera icon if it is shown.
- Frame and capture the page, then review the crop and use available adjustments if necessary.
- Add more pages if the document has them, then name the scan and save it to Drive. Choose a folder if you want a specific destination.
Google describes Drive scans on iOS as searchable PDFs, but its iOS help page does not list the same explicit PDF/JPG selector as the Android instructions. See Google Drive’s iOS scanning instructions.

Check the scan before you leave
- Confirm that every page edge is included and the text is readable.
- Zoom in on small receipt details, especially totals and dates.
- Check that every page is present and in the right order.
- Correct the crop or retake a blurry, shadowed, or incomplete capture.
- Verify the scan saved where you expected and can be found there.
Automatic capture is convenient, but use manual capture when the app does not select the page cleanly. For multi-page documents, keeping pages in one scan session makes it easier to review the set together.
Name and file scans so you can find them
Use a name that identifies both the date and the document, such as 2026-10-04_grocery_receipt or 2026-10-04_insurance_letter. Those are examples, not required formats. Google Drive lets you use a custom name or suggested title and optionally select a folder; Files prompts you to choose a location. In Notes, keep the scan in a clearly titled note.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
Handle sensitive documents carefully
Google says Drive content is not used for advertising; that statement is limited to advertising use and is not a complete description of every privacy or security property. Before storing sensitive records, review the sharing and account settings that apply to your storage. Google’s platform-specific help pages are for Android and for iOS.
A phone stand may help stabilize repeated captures, but it is optional; these scan workflows use the phone camera and the relevant app.
