On most Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, open the Camera app, point it at a QR code, then tap the notification that appears. You do not need to take a photo. You can also scan from Quick Settings, or read a QR code saved as an image using Gallery or a supported image tool.
Scan a QR code with the Camera app
- Open Camera.
- Point the camera at the complete QR code and wait for a notification or link to appear.
- Tap the notification and review the on-screen action before continuing.
The action depends on the code: it may open a website or app, connect to Wi-Fi, or start a download. You do not need to capture an image first. Samsung Canada’s instructions apply to devices sold in Canada and note that screens and settings can differ by country.

Use the Scan QR code shortcut in Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Depending on your Galaxy model and software, you may need to swipe down again to show the full panel.
- Tap Scan QR code.
- Align the code in the frame, wait for it to be recognized, and review the detected destination before choosing an action.
If the shortcut is not visible, use Quick Settings’ edit controls to add it if your device offers that option. Samsung describes this method as allowing you to review the detected code before acting, and the scanner may also provide flashlight access. Check that Scan QR codes is enabled in Camera settings. Samsung’s menu paths vary by software version and region, so these examples are not universal:

- One UI 6.1 and earlier: Samsung Colombia says to open Camera and tap the Settings icon at the top left.
- One UI 7.0 and later: Samsung Colombia says to open Camera, tap Quick controls (the four-dot icon), then tap Settings.
- Galaxy S26 Australian variants: Samsung Australia gives the route Camera > Menu > Settings > Scanning.

Scan a QR code saved as an image
Try Gallery
- Save the image or take a screenshot containing the code.
- Open the image in Gallery.
- Press and hold the QR code, then review the notification or action that appears.
Samsung Canada documents this method for its supported devices. The gesture or available action may vary.

Try a supported image tool
Samsung Colombia also identifies Google Lens and Circle to Search as ways to scan a code in a saved image. These tools and their interfaces are not available on every model or in every country. See Samsung Colombia’s instructions.
Fix common QR-scanning problems
- The code is not recognized: Make sure the entire code is visible, sharp, and not damaged or covered. Tap the code in the Camera preview to help focus, then adjust the distance until it looks clear.
- The image is dim or hard to read: Improve the lighting and avoid glare or shadows. If the code is on another screen, raise that screen’s brightness. Use the Quick Settings scanner’s flashlight control if it is available.
- The camera image looks cloudy: Gently wipe fingerprints or dust from the lens with a soft, dry cloth.
- The link is detected but will not load: Check that the Galaxy device has an internet connection. Recognition of a code does not guarantee that its online destination is reachable.
- A clear code still will not scan: Restart the phone and try again.

Check a QR code’s destination before opening it
A QR code is only a way to reach content; it does not establish that the destination is trustworthy. Review the displayed link or action before proceeding. Be especially cautious with codes from unexpected messages or social media, urgent requests, and offers of prizes or discounts. Do not enter personal, financial, or payment details on a site you have not verified, and avoid installing apps from untrusted sources. Usually not: Samsung says most Galaxy users do not need to install an additional QR scanner app. The built-in Camera and Quick Settings tools cover scanning printed codes and codes shown on another screen, while Gallery or supported image tools can handle some saved codes. Samsung notes that avoiding unknown scanner apps can reduce the need to install software from unfamiliar sources. Samsung Canada updated this guidance on July 2, 2026.
