It is a frontend for the ClamAV antivirus engine: choose what to scan, then review the result. It is an on-demand scanner, not evidence of continuous protection, and antivirus software is optional for many Linux desktop users.
What ClamTk does
ClamTk provides a graphical interface to ClamAV, so you can request a scan without working at the command line. Its documented use is to scan a selected file or directory. ClamAV is the scanning engine; ClamTk is the interface through which you ask it to scan.

ClamAV describes its scanning scope as including viruses, worms, trojans, and other malware, with some threats found in documents and mobile malware among the supported categories. That describes the project’s stated scope, not an independent test of how well it detects current threats.

- Install ClamTk using your distribution’s software tools. Package names and availability depend on the Linux distribution and release. On Ubuntu, community documentation identifies
clamavfor manual scanning andclamtkas the GUI option. Search for those packages in Ubuntu’s software tools or use its documented package-management method. - Open ClamTk and select the file or directory you want checked. The Ubuntu Jammy manpage documents passing a file or directory to the application for scanning; the precise menu labels may vary by version.
- Start the scan and review its result. A scan checks only the item or location you selected. If you want to check another location, request another scan.
ClamAV’s project documentation recommends 5 GiB of free space. That is the project’s installation recommendation, not a universal minimum for every distribution package or system.

ClamTk, ClamAV, and the command line
ClamTk is the graphical option; clamscan is ClamAV’s command-line scanner for files and directories. The ClamTk project points to the command-line tool for more extensive options. Choose the GUI if you want to select items visually; use the command-line route if you are comfortable working in a terminal or need its additional options.
Ubuntu community documentation also describes a ClamAV daemon for more regular scanning workflows, such as scanning incoming email. That is a separate ClamAV capability, not proof that ClamTk itself scans continuously. The same Ubuntu guidance says database updates can be downloaded automatically; update behavior depends on the setup you use.

Do you need antivirus on Linux?
Ubuntu’s user guide says antivirus software exists for Linux but that most users probably do not need it. A scan can still be useful when you want to check a file before sharing it with someone using another operating system: Ubuntu notes that files passed to others can pose a risk to their computers.
ClamTk is therefore best understood as a convenient, on-demand check—not a guarantee that a system is clean, and not a substitute for keeping software updated or exercising care with files. The available documentation does not establish a detection-rate ranking or show that ClamTk provides comprehensive, always-on protection.

Availability varies by distribution
On Ubuntu, community documentation lists clamav, clamav-daemon, and clamtk for different uses. These package names and recommendations are Ubuntu-specific, not universal Linux instructions. The Ubuntu Jammy manpage records ClamTk version 6.07-1 for that release; it should not be treated as the current version for every Ubuntu release or another distribution. Check your distribution’s package listings and documentation before installing.
