How to Scan for Malware and Secure Your PC After a Suspicious Download

A practical Windows guide to scanning a suspicious file and PC, escalating to Defender Offline, securing accounts, and considering a clean reinstall.

If you downloaded a suspicious file, don’t open it again. Scan the file with Microsoft Defender, then run a scan of your PC. If you already ran the download, or the concern remains after an initial scan, use the deeper steps below. A clean scan is useful, but it cannot prove that a device is uninfected.

First, don’t open or run the file again

If the file is still only a download, leave it closed. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. On some Windows 11 systems, you may need to select Show more options first. Microsoft documents scanning an individual file or folder from File Explorer in its Windows Security app guidance.

If Defender detects a threat, follow the recommended quarantine or removal action. Don’t turn off real-time protection or create an exclusion to make the file easier to open: files opened or downloaded while protection is off may not be scanned in real time, and excluded items are no longer checked by Defender.

Run a Quick scan in Windows Security

  1. Open Windows Security. You can search for it from Start.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Quick scan and let it finish.
  4. If a threat is found, follow the recommended action. To review detections and actions, open Protection history from the Virus & threat protection page.

Microsoft Support says, “You can start a scan for malware any time you like.” A Quick scan is a sensible first check, but a clean result does not rule out every threat.

Choose a deeper scan if the concern remains

Windows Security offers several scan types. Their different scopes help determine what to do next, but a broader scan is not a guarantee that every threat will be detected.

Scan option What it checks When to use it Restart?
Quick scan A fast check of common locations where threats are found. Initial triage after a suspicious download. No.
Full scan Every file and program on the device. Concern remains after a Quick scan, or you want a broader check. No.
Custom scan Files or folders you select. You want to check a particular location. No.
Microsoft Defender Offline A scan that runs outside the normal Windows environment. You suspect a persistent or evasive threat, or unwanted software remains. Yes.

Update security intelligence and run a Full scan

  1. Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
  2. Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Protection updates or the equivalent update option shown on your Windows version, then check for updates.
  3. Return to scan options, choose Full scan, and start the scan.

Windows labels can differ by version. Microsoft’s guidance on protecting your PC from unwanted software recommends updating security intelligence and running a full scan.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline for a suspected persistent threat

  1. Save open work; the scan restarts your PC.
  2. In Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, open scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and start the scan.
  3. After Windows restarts and the scan completes, return to Protection history to review the results and any actions taken.

Offline Scan runs in the Windows Recovery Environment rather than the normal Windows kernel, which can help when malware may be hiding while Windows is running. Microsoft describes the feature and its requirements in Microsoft Defender Offline scan in Windows. Microsoft Learn lists support for x64 Windows 11 and x64/x86 Windows 10, and says the feature does not apply to ARM Windows 10/11 or Windows Server SKUs; check the current requirements for your device. Some BitLocker-protected devices may request a recovery key after restart.

Creating bootable Defender Offline media is an optional alternative. Microsoft documents using a blank CD, DVD, or USB with at least 250 MB free. The USB is reformatted, so any files already on it will be erased. Most supported Windows users can start Offline Scan directly in Windows Security and do not need separate media.

If you ran the download, clean up and secure the PC

If you installed or ran the suspicious file, treat the situation more seriously than a download you never opened. Don’t launch it again. Uninstall software you don’t recognize or no longer trust, then update security intelligence and run a Full scan; use Defender Offline if the unwanted software persists. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance recommends removing unwanted applications and scanning the PC.

  • Install Windows and application updates so known security fixes are applied.
  • For future downloads, use the software publisher’s official site. Microsoft notes that unwanted software can arrive bundled with other programs or through compromised web pages; see how malware can infect a PC.
  • Do not assume every suspicious file stole your credentials. If you entered a password after running it, or have another reason to suspect account exposure, secure the affected account.

If a Microsoft account may be compromised

Microsoft’s account-recovery guidance says to scan the PC and clear malware before changing the Microsoft-account password. Afterward, review connected accounts and account settings, including email forwarding and automatic replies. Follow the sequence in Microsoft’s hacked or compromised account recovery guide. As a practical precaution, if the PC still appears compromised, change sensitive passwords from a device you know is clean.

When reinstalling Windows may be appropriate

If you still suspect an infection after cleanup and scanning, reinstalling Windows from installation media using the clean installation option is an escalation to consider. Microsoft says this can help remove malware from the Windows installation. It removes Windows, personal files, apps, and settings from the selected drive, so back up files you need and understand the loss and setup work before proceeding. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for the clean-install process and effects.

For a work- or school-managed PC, contact your organization’s IT department rather than attempting a consumer reinstall; it may need to follow its own incident-response process.
