To find broadcast channels on an LG Smart TV, connect the antenna or direct cable feed to the TV’s antenna input, open the channel menu in Settings, and run the automatic scan (labeled Auto Channel, Auto Tuning, or EZ Scan depending on the model). Let the scan finish, then check the channel list. A scan only picks up signals that already reach the TV. If channels are still missing after a clean scan, the problem is usually the signal, the connection, or a set-top box lineup, and each of those needs a different fix.
Confirm the signal source before you scan
An LG TV’s built-in tuner can only find channels that arrive through a connected source. Before you start a scan, identify which of these three setups you have, because each one changes what the scan can and cannot fix.

- Antenna connected directly to the TV. Over-the-air channels arrive on the TV’s RF/antenna input. A scan finds whatever broadcasts the antenna can receive at that location.
- Cable connected directly to the TV, with no box. The cable feed goes into the same RF input, and the scan builds the list from the cable lineup.
- A set-top box supplying the channels. The TV’s scan may find only a few channels or none, because the box controls its own lineup. You can still run the TV scan, but the box provider handles most lineup problems.
If you do not have an antenna or cable feed attached to the TV, a scan will not produce channels. A digital TV antenna is a reasonable option only for someone who wants free over-the-air channels and has no antenna connected to the set. An antenna will not fix a cable-box lineup or a menu problem.
How to start the channel scan
LG’s general webOS instructions describe the following route. Menu names vary by model, so if your screen differs, follow the labels you see and check your model’s manual.

- Press the Home button on your remote and open Settings.
- Select Advanced Settings, then Channels.
- Choose Channel Settings, then Auto Channel.
- If the TV asks which source to tune, select the input that matches your connection: antenna or cable.
- Select Start and wait for the scan to complete. Do not change inputs or turn the TV off during the scan.
- When the scan ends, open the channel list and confirm that the expected channels appear.
Newer model-era guides list a different route: Settings → All Settings → General → Channels → Channel Tuning. Use whichever route matches your screen.
Scan command names by TV generation
The same function appears under different names. The table below lists the labels LG uses in the documents we reviewed. Publication dates for the owner’s manuals were not stated in the copies we checked, so treat the labels as a guide to what to look for rather than a guarantee for your exact model.

LG’s support article on missing channels covers webOS 3.0 and other TV generations, and its instructions differ by generation. The exact route cannot be pinned down without your model number and webOS version, which you can find under Settings → General → About This TV on most webOS models.
When the scan finishes but channels are still missing
Work through these checks in order. Each step rules out one cause before you move to the next.
1. Rescan after any connection change
LG’s 22LG30 owner’s manual states: “Run EZ Scan again after any Antenna/Cable connection changes.” If you moved the antenna, replaced a splitter, or reconnected the cable, run the scan again. LG’s support article also says a rescan can recover channels that were deleted, moved to a new frequency, or affected by a cable lineup reorganization. Run the scan once more after checking the connection. Repeated scanning does not help if the signal itself is absent.
2. Check signal strength in Manual Tuning
Use the Manual Tuning option, if your model has it, to view signal strength for each channel. The menu path depends on software:

LG’s troubleshooting guidance says a signal strength below 50% may indicate a weak broadcast signal (LG USA Support, “If Your LG TV Screen Flickers,” accessed October 7, 2026). LG’s 2025 signal guide adds that signal-quality fluctuation above 30% can also indicate a weak signal. These are LG’s own troubleshooting thresholds, not an industry standard, and the on-screen display may not appear the same on every model or source.

3. Fix a weak signal at the source
If signal readings are low, check the antenna placement and cable connections first. Tighten all connectors, look for damaged cable, and reposition an indoor antenna near a window if that is practical. If the weak signal persists, contact your building manager, who may control rooftop or shared antennas, or the broadcast provider for your cable service.
4. Contact the set-top box provider
If channels come through a set-top box, the box usually controls its own lineup. A TV scan cannot restore channels the box does not deliver. Contact the service provider, and ask them to confirm which channels are included on your plan and whether the box needs a software update or reactivation.

A completed scan should populate the channel list with the broadcasts you expect for your location. If the list is short, the cause is usually one of the connection, signal, or box issues above. If the list is complete but a specific channel is still absent, check that channel’s signal strength in Manual Tuning before you assume the TV is faulty.
Scans should be repeated only after a real change, such as a new antenna position, a connection change, or an announced channel lineup change, because repeated scanning on an unchanged signal produces the same result.
