How to Scan a Git Diff for Secrets Before You Push

A layered workflow for checking staged Git changes, using push protection, and responding safely if a real credential is exposed.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the staged diff and scan it locally before committing; then rely on repository push protection as a second guardrail, not a guarantee. If a real credential is exposed, treat it as compromised and remediate it promptly.

What to check before a change leaves your machine

A Git diff shows changes, but a visual review alone can miss a credential buried in a configuration edit, test fixture, or generated file. Use both a human review and a secret scanner on the changes you intend to commit.

  1. Review the staged changes with git diff --staged. Confirm that the diff contains only the edits you intend to commit and look for keys, passwords, tokens, and other credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Run a local scanner against the uncommitted diff. Gitleaks documents a protect command that parses Git diff output; its documentation describes staged scanning as suitable for pre-commit use. See the Gitleaks project documentation for current command and integration details.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
    • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
    • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
    • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
    • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
    • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  3. If you want the check to run consistently, integrate it into a pre-commit workflow. Follow the current project documentation for the command and configuration rather than copying an unversioned example: project instructions can change.

  4. Review each finding without copying a possible credential into a log, issue, or public discussion. If it is a real secret, remove it from the change and follow the issuer’s process to rotate or revoke it.

How local scanning and hosted safeguards differ

These controls run at different points and do not have identical coverage.

Control When it runs What it can do Important limit
Local diff scan with Gitleaks Before commit; staged changes can be checked through a pre-commit integration. Parses Git diff output for uncommitted changes, according to the Gitleaks documentation. Results depend on supported patterns and configuration; the documentation does not establish that every kind of secret will be detected.
GitHub push protection When pushing to a repository where the feature is enabled. GitHub says it can block command-line pushes containing supported secrets. See Push protection from the command line. It covers supported patterns, not every possible secret; a sufficiently large push may also time out during scanning. See GitHub’s detection-scope documentation.
GitHub secret scanning Repository monitoring and history scanning. Can scan Git history across branches for hardcoded credentials and create alerts. See About secret scanning. An alert after a push is not prevention of that push. Coverage depends on repository type and configuration, as described in GitHub’s detection-scope documentation.

What push protection does—and does not—promise

GitHub describes push protection this way: “Push protection prevents you from accidentally committing secrets to a repository by blocking pushes containing supported secrets.” The qualification matters: protection depends on the secret pattern being supported and the feature being enabled for the repository. It is a useful backstop, not evidence that an unblocked push is secret-free.

Local scanning can catch a problem before the commit leaves your machine. Hosted protection acts at push time, while history scanning can surface credentials already present in repository history. Use these controls together when available rather than treating one as a substitute for the others.

What to do when a scanner finds a possible credential

  1. Verify the finding using a safe method that does not expose the value in logs, tickets, or chat. A scanner alert is a signal to investigate, not proof that the value is active.

  2. If confirmed, remove the credential from the change and remediate it promptly. GitHub advises addressing exposed secrets as soon as possible; depending on the issuer’s process, remediation may involve rotating the credential before revoking the old one. Follow the issuing provider’s instructions and GitHub’s push-protection guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. If the push already succeeded, investigate the repository and its history rather than only editing the latest file. GitHub secret scanning can scan history across branches and raise alerts, but its availability and coverage depend on repository configuration. See About secret scanning.

Why a clean scan is not proof of safety

Every scanner has a defined detection scope. A clean result means the configured scanner did not report a match in what it scanned; it does not establish that the change contains no credential. GitHub documents that detection depends on supported patterns and configuration, and that push protection may not block a push if scanning times out on a sufficiently large push. Keep reviewing the actual diff, use current scanner rules, and treat unexpected findings as incidents to investigate.
