Measure the wearer and the matching dimension on the prop, then scale all axes by the same factor if the entire prop needs to be larger or smaller. Uniform scaling preserves proportions; changing only X, Y, or Z stretches the whole selected object along that axis and can distort details. Keep an untouched copy, verify the resulting dimensions in your slicer, and check the fit with a mock-up or small test print before printing the full prop.
Start by measuring the fit that matters
Identify exactly where the prop must fit and what kind of dimension controls that fit. For a piece that surrounds a body part, compare the wearer’s measurement with the model’s corresponding inside dimension. For a prop that rests against the body, the relevant measurement may instead be an outside dimension or a contact surface. Do not compare an inside measurement on one side with an outside measurement on the other.

Measure the wearer at the intended location and, if the fit depends on clothing or padding, take the measurement with those layers in place. Then inspect the model or its dimensions in your CAD program or slicer and identify the matching dimension. A flexible measuring tape can help record body measurements; no particular brand or tool is required.
There is no universal clearance value established for costume props. The necessary fit depends on the design, where it sits, and how it is worn, so do not add a fixed number of millimeters or percentage without a reason specific to the piece.

Calculate a uniform scale factor
When the whole prop has the right shape but is too large or small, divide the target dimension by the model’s corresponding dimension:
Scale factor = target dimension ÷ current model dimension

For example, if a model’s relevant inside dimension is 100 mm and the desired target is 110 mm, the factor is 1.10. Applying 1.10 uniformly makes each axis 110% of its original size. This is a mathematical way to apply uniform scaling, not a universal fit formula for any particular costume part.

Choose the right kind of scaling

Axis-specific controls are useful when a deliberate shape change is needed, not as a shortcut for a local fit problem. If a cuff, opening, or contact area alone is wrong, changing the entire object’s scale along one axis also changes every other feature in that direction. Consider a localized CAD edit or redesign instead. The cited software documentation explains global transform controls; it does not establish a single best tool or method for local edits.
Keep the original and apply the scale
- Preserve a reference. Save a separate working copy or duplicate the model before transforming it. Shapr3D’s Scale workflow includes a Copy option that leaves the original element unchanged.
- Set the scale mode. In PrusaSlicer, open the Scale tool with S; its widget uses corner boxes for uniform scaling and X, Y, or Z handles for non-uniform scaling. Choose the uniform control when proportions should remain unchanged. In other CAD software, use the uniform option or enter the same factor for every axis.
- Check the anchor or placement. Autodesk Fusion lets you choose an anchor point for the scale transform. Confirm the model remains positioned as intended after scaling; a change in size can affect where it sits relative to the origin or other objects.
- Inspect the final dimensions. After scaling, check the relevant dimension in the CAD program or slicer and make sure it matches the target you calculated. Also check the overall dimensions so the resized prop remains suitable for your intended print setup.
Validate the fit before printing the full prop
A correct calculation confirms dimensions, but does not by itself prove that a wearable prop will feel or fit as intended. Community advice in a cosplay-printing discussion suggests making a cardboard mock-up and printing a small portion first. Treat these as practical checks, not guaranteed methods or a standardized tolerance test.

- Use a cardboard mock-up to check the general shape and placement against the wearer before committing to a full print.
- If the fit depends on a particular opening or contact area, consider a small test print of that region and check it in the intended wearing conditions.
- If the check reveals that only one area is wrong, revisit that area rather than applying an unequal scale factor to the entire model by default.
- After any adjustment, verify the final exported dimensions in the slicer before starting the full print.
The practical sequence—measure, calculate, scale uniformly when appropriate, preserve the source, and verify the fit—addresses the main risk: solving a local fit issue by unintentionally changing the proportions of the entire prop.
