YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. To keep a separate file on your computer, record locally during the broadcast; a channel archive and a local recording are two different copies.
Find the stream archive in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content, then open the Live tab.
- Find the completed stream. If YouTube created an archive, it should appear in this list.
YouTube says it can automatically archive encoder, webcam, and mobile streams that are under 12 hours. It also says streams at 1440p and 2160p (4K) are automatically archived, but the 12-hour limitation still matters: a stream longer than that may not be captured. YouTube Help does not state that every eligible stream will always produce a complete archive.

Change an archive’s visibility or delete it
- In YouTube Studio → Content → Live, open the stream’s details.
- Choose Visibility, select the privacy setting you want, and save.
- To remove the archive, use the delete option in its details and confirm only if you intend to remove it.
YouTube’s confirmation flow warns that deletion is permanent. If you need a copy, download or otherwise verify it before deleting the archive.

Download your own stream as an MP4
If the stream archive is available as one of your uploaded videos, YouTube’s computer instructions provide a Studio download option:

- Open YouTube Studio → Content.
- Select the video, open its menu, and choose Download if that option is available.
- Check the downloaded file before treating it as your backup.
YouTube lists MP4 downloads at 720p or 360p, depending on video size. Do not assume the downloaded file will preserve the original broadcast resolution. For a bulk copy of your uploaded videos, YouTube identifies Google Takeout as an option.
Why the download option may be unavailable
- The video was removed or has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike.
- It uses a pre-approved audio track.
- You have already downloaded that individual video five times in the last 24 hours.
- You are trying to download another person’s video. The Studio feature is for creators’ own uploaded videos, not downloading other users’ videos.
Keep a local recording as a separate backup
A YouTube archive remains on the channel; a local VOD is a file recorded to your computer or storage. For important streams, YouTube Help recommends: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” Start recording in the streaming software or encoder you use for the broadcast, then verify that the recording completed and plays correctly. YouTube’s archive guidance does not prescribe particular recording controls or settings.

A local recording is especially useful for streams approaching or exceeding YouTube’s 12-hour capture limit, or if the platform archive is unavailable. An external drive can store a completed recording, but a drive by itself does not capture or encode the broadcast.
