For a supported Xbox game, connect to the Xbox network, let the game finish saving, then exit normally and give cloud synchronization time to complete. Xbox cloud saves are tied to your signed-in account, but a synced save does not guarantee you can still launch a game after it leaves Game Pass. Check the specific title’s removal notice and store listing if you plan to keep playing.
Save and sync your latest progress before the game leaves
- Connect to the internet and sign in. Use the Xbox account you played with on the Xbox console, PC, or handheld.
- Open the game while online. Let any pending synchronization finish before playing. Avoid starting the game on another device if the first device may have unsynced progress.
- Save in the game, then exit normally. Microsoft’s developer documentation says supported Game Saves APIs can sync local and cloud data, may attempt periodic synchronization during play, and attempt an upload when a session ends while connected. - Wait for the sync to finish. On PC or handheld, check the Game Save Sync Indicator where it is available. What happens if you played offline or get a conflict?
Offline play
When playing offline, progress is saved locally on the device and the current session does not sync to the cloud. Reconnect to the Xbox network and allow synchronization before relying on that progress on another device.

Local and cloud copies conflict
If both local and cloud save data have changed, Microsoft says the system prompts you to resolve the conflict. Compare the displayed progress carefully and choose the copy that contains your latest progress. Choosing an older version may discard newer progress.

Saving progress and retaining access to the game are separate questions. A cloud save can preserve progress for a supported game, but syncing does not by itself establish whether you can launch that game after its catalog access changes. Check the title’s current Game Pass leaving notice and its store listing; the rule is not established here for every game.

Can you keep playing from the same save if you buy the game?
That depends on the title and version. Check that you are using the same Xbox account and a compatible version of the game, and confirm that its save data carries over. Xbox specifically documents cross-device save carryover for Xbox Play Anywhere games: the supported collection carries saves, add-ons, and achievements across supported PC, console, and handheld devices when players sign in with their Xbox account.
