Pass a destination in Playwright’s page.screenshot() call: await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshots/page.png' }). Relative paths are resolved from Node.js’s current working directory, so create the destination folder first if it might not exist.
Save a screenshot to a folder
Install Playwright in your Node.js project if you have not already, then use the path option to choose the output file. This runnable CommonJS example creates the folder, opens a page, and saves both a viewport screenshot and a full-page screenshot:

})();The path may be relative or absolute; a relative screenshot path is based on the process’s current working directory, not automatically on the script file’s location. Use path.resolve() when you want to make the output location explicit. The example uses Node’s fs.mkdir() with recursive: true so the directory exists before Playwright writes the files. Playwright documents the screenshot path behavior in its Page screenshot API.
Choose what to capture
Visible viewport
With no capture-scope option, Playwright captures the currently visible viewport. Give the call a path to save it directly:

A single element
Call screenshot() on a locator to save just the matching element:

Image bytes instead of a file
If you omit path, the screenshot call returns a Buffer. That is useful when you want to process, upload, or otherwise handle the image in memory instead of writing it to a folder:

Set format and image options
Playwright’s screenshot API supports options such as type, quality, scale, clip, animations, caret, omitBackground, and mask, in addition to path and fullPage. The file extension can determine the image type; check the live API reference for exact option behavior and version notes.
- PNG: a suitable default when you want a lossless screenshot. The
qualityoption does not apply to PNG. - JPEG or WebP: use the corresponding type or file extension when you want a compressed image;
qualitycontrols compression for these formats. - Scale and clipping: use
scaleto control screenshot scaling andclipwhen you need a defined region rather than the full viewport. - Page appearance: options including
omitBackground,caret,animations, andmasklet you adjust aspects of the capture; consult the API reference for accepted values and behavior.
Use screenshot assertions for visual regression
If the goal is to detect visual changes in Playwright Test, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() rather than treating an ordinary saved screenshot as a baseline comparison. Playwright Test can create or compare reference screenshots and configure snapshot paths. Screenshot rendering can vary across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode, so keep the baseline and comparison environments consistent.
