How to download and save your statement
- Open your bank’s service through a trusted route. Use its official app, a saved bookmark, a known web address you enter yourself, or another trusted source. Don’t follow an unexpected message asking you to verify account information.
- Find the statement or documents area. Open the statement you need and use the bank’s download or save option if one is available. Menu names and options differ by institution; the sources cited here do not establish steps for a particular bank.
- Keep the electronic document in a secure place. Save the original somewhere you can access again and keep it organized for your records. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada advises consumers receiving electronic financial documents to review them and save them securely for future access. Its guidance applies to federally regulated Canadian institutions, not every bank worldwide. Read the FCAC guidance on electronic financial documents.
A screenshot is generally unnecessary when the institution makes the statement available as an electronic document. Keep the original file rather than relying on a captured image as your only copy.

How to share a bank statement safely
- Confirm the request. If someone asks you to provide a statement, verify the request through contact details or a website you found independently—not by replying to the message or using its links.
- Ask which channel and file format to use. Follow the receiving organization’s verified instructions, such as its own portal or another approved method. No single channel is established as safest for every recipient, and the right file format depends on that organization’s requirements.
- Send only what is required. Check what information the recipient needs and provide only the document or details its process requires.
- Check before editing or redacting. Ask the recipient whether it accepts redacted statements and exactly which fields, if any, may be hidden. Acceptance is not universal; preserve the unedited original.
The CFPB advises consumers who receive an email or text from a bank or credit union asking them to verify account information not to respond or click the message’s links. Contact the institution using a customer-service number obtained from another source. See the CFPB’s advice on suspicious bank messages.

If sharing means connecting a financial-data service
A connected service is different from sending a statement file: it may receive account data directly, sometimes through a separate aggregator, and access may be one-time or ongoing. Before authorizing one, review what data it accesses, whether other companies receive it, how often access occurs, how long data is stored, and how to revoke access or request deletion. Check for payment permissions if relevant. These are considerations for financial-data services, not requirements for every ordinary file transfer. Read the CFPB’s guidance on sharing financial data.

U.S. regulatory context is separate from the practical steps for sending a statement: the CFPB’s final-rule overview says providers must make consumer data available on request to consumers and authorized third parties in a secure and reliable manner, and describes privacy obligations for third parties.
