To save online study notes for offline reading, use SingleFile’s self-extracting file format. SingleFileZ is no longer a separate project: its repository says it was completely merged into SingleFile. Open the study page, let it finish loading, save it with the extension, and verify the local copy before you go offline.
What happened to SingleFileZ?
SingleFileZ’s project page says, “SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile.” For a new setup, install SingleFile for your browser and choose its self-extracting file format. If you previously used SingleFileZ, you can import your old settings into SingleFile. The current SingleFile README documents the available formats and workflow: SingleFile README. The merger notice is at the SingleFileZ project page.

How do I save study notes to read offline?
- Install or open SingleFile. Use the extension for the browser you plan to use. The extension listings provide installation steps for Firefox and Chrome.
- Open the notes page and wait for it to finish loading. Allow images and other visible content to appear before saving. A page saved too early may be incomplete.
- Save the page. Select the SingleFile toolbar button to save the current page. For a selected passage, a frame, a link, or multiple tabs, use the extension’s context-menu commands. Its “Annotate and save the page…” command can also highlight text, add notes, or remove content before saving.
- Choose the self-extracting format. In SingleFile settings, find the File format option and select self-extracting. The saved HTML/ZIP hybrid packages the page and its resources in one file. It can also be opened as a ZIP archive and extracted if you need access to the resources separately.
- Keep the file somewhere easy to find. By default, it goes to the browser’s configured download folder. Move it to a clearly named study folder if you prefer.
- Check it while you are still online. Open the saved file and confirm that the notes and essential images are present. Opening this format directly from local storage has browser-specific restrictions, especially in Chrome; see the next section.
For a portable backup, you can copy the saved file to a USB flash drive, but SingleFile does not require special hardware.
Can I open a SingleFileZ page offline in Chrome?
SingleFileZ’s FAQ says Chrome requires the SingleFileZ extension or a command-line switch to open its saved pages from the local filesystem. Because the project has merged into SingleFile, use SingleFile’s self-extracting format and check its current instructions for your browser and version. A page served from a web server does not face the same local-file restrictions described in that FAQ. Firefox and Safari have different documented conditions, so do not assume the Chrome behavior applies to them.

If the local file does not open as expected, keep the extension enabled and try opening it from the browser. Another option is to extract the self-extracting file as a ZIP and open the resulting HTML, though extracted resources and page behavior can vary. The format requires JavaScript to open as a self-extracting page; ordinary HTML does not require JavaScript for viewing.
Which SingleFile format should I choose?
SingleFile’s README compares several output formats. For offline study notes, the self-extracting format is useful when you want one compressed, extractable package; ordinary HTML is simpler to open but does not put the page and its resources into the same single-file package.

What can make a saved page incomplete?
- The page had not finished loading. Wait until the content you need is visible, then save again.
- The browser blocks extensions on the page. Browsers prevent extensions from running on certain protected domains. If the toolbar action is unavailable there, this is a browser security restriction, not necessarily a SingleFile failure.
- Frames or deferred images were omitted. The FAQ notes that speed-related settings can leave out frames or images that load later. Check the saved copy and adjust the relevant options if needed.
- Cleanup settings affect speed. Disabling hidden-element cleanup or unused-style removal may improve processing speed, according to the FAQ, but can change what is retained.
- The source page is interactive or access-controlled. A saved copy should not be assumed to preserve every logged-in feature, streaming element, or protected resource. Inspect the result and follow the study platform’s terms and copyright rules.
SingleFileZ’s FAQ says saving can fetch images, CSS, frames, fonts, and other resources that are present but not displayed or cached. That does not guarantee that every resource or interactive feature can be reproduced in a local copy.

Does saving with SingleFile upload my notes?
The SingleFileZ FAQ says, “SingleFileZ does not upload any data to third-party servers. All the work is done in your browser.” That describes the FAQ’s stated behavior. The extension can upload to Google Drive or GitHub if you explicitly enable those destinations in its options, so review your settings if you want a local-only workflow. See the SingleFileZ FAQ and the extension listing for details.
