The format setting is not documented as interchangeable across every Browshot retrieval method.
Save a Simple API screenshot as PNG
Browshot documents the Simple API response body as a PNG screenshot or thumbnail. Its curl guide uses -L to follow redirects and -o to write the response to a file:

Choose PNG or JPEG with the thumbnail endpoint
If you use Browshot’s full screenshot API, create the screenshot and then request its thumbnail using the screenshot ID. The API documentation lists a format choice of png or jpeg for that endpoint; PNG is the default. Set the saved filename extension to match the format you request, such as screenshot.jpeg for JPEG.

The same documentation describes quality from 1 to 100 for JPEG thumbnails only. Do not apply that quality setting to PNG. Batch and crawl outputs also document a format choice of PNG or JPEG, defaulting to PNG; follow the options for the specific retrieval method you use rather than assuming every endpoint accepts the same parameters. Save locally or use service-side hosting
The curl example writes the response to a local file. Browshot’s API documentation also describes hosting screenshots or thumbnails through S3 or Browshot hosting. For S3 hosting, you need a bucket; the documentation allows an optional filename. Use the relevant hosting configuration when you want Browshot to store the image rather than downloading the response to your own machine.

Troubleshooting
- The saved file is not a usable image: Check that the response completed and that curl followed redirects with
-L. Also verify that the filename extension matches the format returned. - You expected JPEG from the Simple API: The Simple API response is documented as PNG. Use the full API thumbnail endpoint for its documented
format=jpegoption. - Your quality setting has no effect: Browshot documents
qualityfor JPEG thumbnails only, not PNG. - A batch or crawl request does not honor the option you used elsewhere: Check that retrieval method’s documented parameters. Although batch and crawl outputs document PNG/JPEG format selection, endpoint options should not be assumed to be identical.
- S3 hosting does not work: Confirm that you have configured a bucket; Browshot’s documentation requires one for S3 hosting.
