Set the output format explicitly: for Browserless’s current REST /screenshot endpoint, pass options.type as png, jpeg, or webp, then save the response bytes to a file with the matching extension. For BrowserQL, pass the format to screenshot(type: ...) and decode the returned base64 before writing the file. Save a Browserless REST screenshot in the format you need
Send a POST request to Browserless’s current /screenshot endpoint with the page URL and options.type. The endpoint returns image bytes; write the response body directly to disk rather than treating it as text. The examples below use https://production-sfo.browserless.io/screenshot as the endpoint URL; use the endpoint host and authentication method for your Browserless account as specified in its REST documentation.

Save a screenshot from BrowserQL
BrowserQL’s screenshot result is returned as a base64 value when you request its base64 field. Decode it before writing the file. The following GraphQL operation shows the essential screenshot request; send it to your BrowserQL endpoint with the account’s token, then decode the returned value.

Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP

Format is only one part of a useful screenshot. Browserless’s screenshot options include full-page capture, clipping, selecting an element, image quality where applicable, waiting for images, and transparent-background capture. Consult the current screenshot option reference for the precise schema and option names for the interface you use.

Preserve the intended transparent result in the format and downstream workflow you choose. - Quality: Do not rely on a quality setting for PNG; Browserless says it does not apply. Troubleshoot common save problems
- The file exists but will not open: Check that the response was successful before saving, and that you wrote the raw REST response bytes rather than a JSON or text representation. In BrowserQL, decode the base64 value before writing.
- The image extension does not match its contents: Match
options.typeor the BrowserQL screenshot type to the filename extension: PNG to.png, JPEG to.jpeg, and WebP to.webp. - PNG appears to ignore quality: That is expected; Browserless states that quality does not apply to PNG. Choose a supported format where the quality option is relevant if you need that control.
- Images are absent from the capture: Wait for images or a page-specific selector; for lazy-loaded content, scroll to trigger loading before taking the screenshot.
- Transparency is missing: In BrowserQL, check the documented
omitBackgroundsetting and verify that the rest of your image workflow preserves transparency. - A guide says WebP is unsupported: That limitation belongs to legacy Browserless BaaS v1 material, which is no longer actively supported. Current REST and BrowserQL documentation list WebP as supported; use the documentation for the current endpoint.
Browserless format support: current endpoint versus legacy BaaS v1
Browserless’s current REST and BrowserQL documentation support PNG, JPEG, and WebP. A legacy BaaS v1 page says its old screenshot API did not return WebP and notes that BaaS v1 is no longer actively supported.
